View Full Version : Post a Picture of Your Kitchen!

I was playing around with my camcorder and took a picture of part of my kitchen. It's not the greatest picture, but it got me thinking how much I'd enjoy seeing what everyone else's kitchen looked like.

Here's mine. I'll post some better pictures after I get a digital camera for Christmas.

Claire, I love your kitchen!! It looks so roomy and looks like it has great storage. We're hoping to remodel ours in the next year or two.

Here's a Quicktime VR of our dining room, you can see into our tiny kitchen. DH must have taken this around the holidays, check out the Costco pecan pie on the table. :p

claire,
We have a large KRUPS toaster oven, microwave, and a neat grill...eat out lots...and my Sister lives right down the street :D
I must admit tho, with everyone doing holiday baking, etc...it's starting to get to me...I just try to keep focused on how beautiful it will be when finished...at least the architects plans look great...

Lisa,

I like that long bar. That must be very handy for entertaining. You've got plenty of counterspace and that is SO important.

That's one thing I love about my kitchen. Lots of counterspace. It makes up for the closet-sized kitchen I had when I lived in New York City. The apartment was about 400 square feet and the kitchen was the size of a closet. I didn't even have a freezer -- just one of those 1/2 refrigerators with a tiny compartment that was just big enough to hold a few ice trays and just cold enough to keep them the consistency of slush.

Actually, the picture must look deceiving. We have very little counterspace, but the bar does help with serving. It's not accessible for prep work. That's one of the things I hope to improve with a remodel.

I'll post a picture as soon as ours is finished being remodeled! They just broke into the kitchen last week - they're saying it'll be done by February. OK so it's really my mom's kitchen, but it's mine too until I move out :D

ps. Lisa, I couldn't see your clip either.

It's fun to look out everyone's kitchen window. Our window is in the breakfast room and doesn't have much of a view -- just looks out on a fence.

Sandy, I love all your snow.

Peggy, you'll feel better after I post mine, tonight. Mine is small, old-fashioned, inefficient, counter-space deficient, grubby, and new this week, festooned with water spots on the ceiling from (I think) water damage in the bathroom above.

We rent. We are trying to buy our house...still waiting for the landlord to say for sure that he is willing to sell. I hope that the impending repair bill will help him with his decision. But if we buy, I am going to do a low-budget renovation approximately 2 hours after we close on the house.

Although, that shappy little kitchen has turned out some awfully good stuff in the past couple of years. I imagine yours has as well....

I scanned some pictures of our kitchen when we first moved in, so things have changed a bit (tile backsplash, paint, chairs at the island, accessories, etc). However, as we are moving, this won't be my kitchen for too much longer. The pictures make it look darker than it really is. I do love it though! However, it never is as clean as in the picture!

Thanks Kim. Like I said, it won't be mine much longer. We built the house, but the prerequisite was that we had to have the Amish cabinetmaker build the kitchen, as the subdivision land was his. It was in the contract. Like they had to twist our arm on that one! ;)

Good Luck on getting the house you want. Did you make an offer?

It is a builder, so no "offer" needs to be made. We put some "interest" money down, but they only have 1 more of this floorplan left to make in this subdivision and if someone else comes along who wants to buy it, who has an offer on their place or no placde to sell, they return our money and give it to the new people. I hope we get it. Its kind of like yours because the living room and eat in kitchen are all one...there are arches and columns between the kit and LR!

~sigh~. Mine went on the market today so keep your fingers crossed!

Peggy - you saw the color a couple of weeks ago, and you confirmed my thought that it's a great color for a kitchen! Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks also to those who commented on the light fixtures. The white blobs over the table actually look way better in person. :D Both sets of fixtures are new acquisitions. Well, rather, we've had them for 6-8 months, but they were only installed in the last week. We originally picked out the blue ones because we were going to paint the kitchen light blue. When I changed my mind and went to sage green, it was too late to return them, and I just prayed they'd match! Thankfully, with a little accessorizing to come, everything will pull together just fine.

They're from The Great Indoors, by the way - my new favorite store! :D

I love seeing everyone's kitchens!! Here are some pictures of mine. I dearly love my kitchen - it is not top of the line or huge, but it is cozy and has just enough space for me. I will be SO sad to leave this kitchen behind in two years. :(

I took pics from a few angles (notice the container of almond roca on the island :D ):

Wow! I love these pictures!

Laura, your kitchen looks so homey and warm. The bookshelf looks great -- so does the almond roca.

Funnybone, your kitchen is nice too. What kind of countertops are those? Pergo? Marble? Faux Pergo ;). Also, I like your French doors. I don't have an island, but that must come in handy. That's one fancy kitchen!

Julia, it looks like you've got some top notch appliances. Your dishwasher in particular. Oh. Nice arch too! I have one in my kitchen but I didn't include it in the picture.

Kim, good luck getting the house you want. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

So far, nobody has a fireplace/brick oven in their kitchen. I'm dying to see if anyone has a fireplace in the kitchen. That's one thing I'd like in my dream kitchen.

I love seeing everyone's kitchens! From the small and cozy to the big and roomy, they're all just wonderful. Sandy, I agree with everyone else, those blue fixtures are just too cool! Looks like something that Vern would install on Trading Spaces! :D

I'm going to be a really late poster on this thread...my kitchen will be completely finished in about 3 or 4 months. We're in the middle of it right now, and it looks horrible! There are no doors on my cabinets. All 24 doors have been stripped of paint since Thanksgiving weekend and are stacked in my garage. The cabinet fixtures have also been stripped but have not been sanded. Yesterday the entire dining room and the kitchen ceiling were painted a color called 'fennel' which is a very, very light olive green. My cabinets will be painted a darker color called 'dried moss' (not nearly as grotesque as it sounds! :o ) and within about 2 months the icky blue formica countertops will be replaced with a new and improved formica countertop in the 'light oak' wood veneer.

As I type this my kitchen ceiling fan is in 17 pieces on my kitchen floor and the spray primer is drying. Tonight all of the fan pieces will be 'faux painted' in a 'Rust Patina' color (rust colored paint and black colorwashing dabbed on it) and my new kitchen cabinet knobs will be faux painted in the same rust-look finish. Of course I can't put those cool knobs on until we sand, prime, and paint the cabinets! :o Hopefully when DH comes back from PA on the 22nd we can start that!

While DH is in PA I'm also finally going to be painting my grapevine mural! I'm starting on a dining room wall, going up and onto the ceiling, winding around my dining room light fixture, trailing through to the kitchen, and dropping down over a kitchen doorway, approximately 40 feet long! A vine, clusters of grapes and a lot of leaves. Should be pretty cool when I'm finished with it! Had to make sure the dining room and kitchen ceilings were completely done before I attempt the artwork.

So hopefully by March or so we should have the rustic Italian/Wine/Grapes/Vineyard kitchen & dining room that we've been working on for years finally come to life! I'll be sure and post photos when it is finally done!

Okay, here are a couple of photos of my kitchen. Disclaimer: We're starting a remodel as I type. I took the two photos from the area that one would generally call a breakfast nook, but we're turning that area into a continuation of the rest of the kitchen, moving the fridge over there (in the exact spot from which the first photo is taken) as well as shelves, cabinets, and countertops.

The wall where the fridge is now will be demolished from countertop upwards, so that it opens up into the living room (and I can see the TV while I cook ;)). The tile floors are being replaced with cork, the fake-wood laminate countertops are being replaced with Silestone, and the fake-wood laminate backsplash is just being removed, and the walls painted to complement the new counters. Oh, and I'm getting a new sink too. :)

But I'll post "after" photos in a few months. :D

BTW, the ugly wicker-looking light fixture you see hanging down into the very top of the picture is NOT ours. :o Neither is the bubble valance on the window. And that's a dried-up leaf that my kitty dragged in sitting in the middle of the floor.

Thanks Claire. The Island is granite and the other counter is Corian with a corian sink. The cabinets are cherry wood and the island and wet bar area are a glazed maple. The floor is Oak, so it is a true hardwood. The picture looks darker than the kitchen really is and there is more of a contrast between the floor and cabinets. The kitchen is large, but at times too large. I've had smaller kitchens that I have loved just as much as this one.

When we move, I guess I will have to post a picture of my new kitchen.

Jewel, nice to see you post again. Can't wait to see the pictures - sounds like a lot to work.

Aggie, your kitchen reminds me of the kitchen in our first house. Not the cabinets, but the layout. We remodelled and then ending up moving as they were finishing it off - story of my life it seems (that's why we tend to buy new).

Peggy, I was fried when I got back from book club last night, and I plain-old forgot to post. Tonight, though...plus I plan to also make a challah for the "me and my challah" thread.

We got some bad news last night, though, on the kitchen front. My landlord finally got back to us about our offer to buy the house: Big fat no. He said that maybe we could revisit the question in April; he wants to do a tax-free exchange and buy another rental property, and he won't be in a position to do that until April. Unfortunately that won't work as well for us, since we had only planned to be in that house for 2 years as it was. I am not sure if it is a wise investment to buy a house, knowing that you will turn it around in 18 months. Sigh.

Oh well. We have already put a lot into this house....it is jsut not worth it to fix up the place any more if we can't buy it.

Rats.

YES, we ordered pizza on Sunday night. I didn't feel like cooking, and we were already out running errands at Home Depot. SO THERE. :p

The open space is really nice, but we only have it because we took out the island that used to be in the middle of the kitchen. Actually, it wasn't in the middle - it was much too close to the fridge and wouldn't have allowed me to have anything other than a side-by-side. So off it went. :) But it's about to be turned into more cabinets/countertop space in the soon-to-be-formerly breakfast nook area. :D

Hey, this is fun to see everyone elses kitchens. My husband designed our kitchen from top to bottom and I couldn't even boil water then! It's because of our great kitchen that I found out that I love to cook. You should have seen it before, it was awful! The only thing I would change is I would put a faucet over the stovetop (something he tried to talk me into but I thought that sounded like a crazy thing at the time) and add his original idea of a raised bar on the island with barstools at it. The kitchen is after all where we spend most of our time... by the way I'm sure you're all wonderful but I wasn't going to go in there and wash the pots and pans for you :)

I would have to agree!

I don't have any pictures I can post of my kitchen - no scanner or digital camera because DH & I live in the stone-age. :D It is small but fairly large considering we own a 2 bedroom house. It was remodeled by the former owners about 2 years ago, so everything is almost brand-new. My countertops are dark green which is great because it doesn't show the dirt as much. :o There is quite a lot of counter space, too.

Funnybone, your kitchen is awesome! And Laura B, I love the red walls in yours. My walls are all white (we bought our house new) and DH insisted that we wait until the walls actually "need" painting before we change color. I am hoping to do a jewel-toned emerald green, or other dark green color.

My house was built in 1972, and except for the counter/cabinet area by the refrigerator, my kitchen is exactly like that! Or, rather, it was. The wall was this really ugly denim blue and pink, too. Well, after watching a home improvement sort of show, I fixed things up: I kept the cabinets, but painted them bright white (and boy, was that an effort! Priming and then several coats of paint!) I put knobs on the doors - a soft green.

Pfaltzgraff has a pattern called Summer Breeze that I like for accent pieces:
http://www.pfaltzgraff.com/media/lifestyle/Sumbrls.jpg
And I painted the walls of the kitchen a very pale yellow, while the knobs are a soft green.

We have a strip of wood above the cabinets (forget the name; sort of like a dish board? A dado? Forget the name) and I painted it white and then put a border paper in Summer Breeze - a stripe of the blue at top and bottom, and then the pretty flowers in the middle. Such a difference!

Next year I get a corner cabinet, and I will be looking into either replacing the countertop entirely, or else glueing new formica over what's there right now.

Just to make you all feel better, here is my little shabby kitchen. And, yes, I know that you are not supposed to store olive oil on the windowsill, but the bottles are so pretty, and the window has a 40 foot holly tree outside, so it is shaded and not particularly warm.

The kitchen is so small that you can't get a sense of it from the doorway, so I took pictures of each wall.

Sandy, it is clear where your priorities are....why yes, that is a box of wine on the floor. That is the spot for things that need to go down to the basement but that we are too lazy to take down right now. Frequently there is a very big pile there.

And yes, our kitchen is definitely geared for the oversized amongst us.

Jen, I think your kitchen is great! Two dishwashers? How extravagant!;) To give you some perspective on my kitchen. I'm 5'2.5" and can paint my kitchen ceilings with just one extension on a roller. No step stool required! DH= is 6'2" so I'm sure he feels claustrophobic in it.

So your kitchen is tall and narrow, not unlike yourself and mine is kind of squat...not unlike myself!:D

OK, you people...here are real-live pitcures of my kitchen the way it looks almost every day, despite my efforts to keep it tidy. These shots are post-rommates-leaving-for-work, and the chaos that remains. (I KNOW some of you cleaned up before taking your pictures...):p
Knit-Wits: those books on the table are knitting manuals from the library...I'm going to start a new project during my winter break!

And here's Wrigley trying to poke her nose into the crisper, where her favorite snack is hidden away (carrots!). I thought it would be funny to see people's refrigerators, as well. With four people living in one place, our fridge always is packed to the brim with leftovers and everyone's different food...I think there are about 7 jars of mustard in there somewhere. And the freezer is a disaster...someday I'd like to have a whole separate, full-size freezer. Sigh.

Okay, here we go. I have been dying to re-do my kitchen since we moved in. It looks very pretty, but is not functional at all.

The first picture was from before we moved in. That's the previous owner's stuff on the counter and curtains (yuck).

http://www.sandydog.com/images/kitchen.jpg

This is another view (with my mess all over the place). It picks up pretty much where the last picture left off. The sink would be right at the left edge of what you are viewing.

Check out the counter to the right of the stove. It is so narrow you can barely fit anything on it! To the right of that is a big open space where we have a table. So the kitchen is big, but there's not any counter or cabinet space. These pictures cover almost all of the cabinets and counters. For a 9 x 18 kitchen (give or take), there's a ton of wasted space.

I'm digging up this thread because I FINALLY got my hands on my son's digital camera, his laptop so the pictures could be uploaded, *AND* the internet connection all at the same time. :D Here are two pics of my kitchen. YES...I cleaned up. :D It's been in a constant baking frenzy since last Friday, so I had to catch it right after the latest cleanup. The cabinets are much closer to the color they appear in the first picture. The picture with the stove on it evidently didn't get as much of the flash...the cabinets aren't nearly that dark.

Now...let's see if this will work.

Looking at all these lovely pictures, I'm stricken by one rather odd fact. None of you (with possibly the exception of Erika, since I couldn't tell in her photos) seem to have wall ovens. I had no idea my kitchen was that much of an oddity. Wall ovens are very popular in Southern Californian homes. Is that a regional thing, or is it just that the wall-oven people haven't posted photos?

Gail - we had one before we remodeled. I just thought that the space we be better used with a range/oven together.

I do have double wall ovens (That black blob to the right of the fridge). It may be a regional thing, but it isn't common here (in this area of PA) either. We built our house, so it was our choice to have it. Our house in GA had double wall ovens too. We are moving to the Chicago area and 99% of the houses that DH went into have wall ovens (all new homes). However, it could be that they are more common in certain price ranges too. I prefer them to a range.

Does it count if you want wall ovens? :D The kitchen that we have right now does not really lend itself to wall ovens; I think I would have to lose a whole bunch of my cabinet space and I'm not sure that even with that idea if it would work. Maybe in our next house....

I don't think that wall ovens are really odd or anything, I just wonder if some of us live in newer construction where the kitchens are designed less for people who do a lot of cooking - I have heard stories from my husband (residential architect) about clients who don't want much of a kitchen built in these $1M homes because they don't cook much....so who knows.

I don't have a wall oven, but we had one growing up. We built our house 8 years ago. I'm wondering if it is cheaper for builders to give an allowance for a range, rather than install a wall oven. MIL has double wall ovens; one is a convection.

Very nice mamasue!

simmerdown, I'm really not the best person to try and explain this, but I know that they have to be on a website or someplace like imagestaion.com before you can load them here. Once they are on a website you have to right click on the image and copy the location. Come to where you would post a reply and click on the IMG button in the vB code secion and copy the image location on that line and then the pics should appear.

We remodeled and kind of blew it...don't get me wrong, I love my kitchen, but we enclosed it and made it kind of kitchen for one. As daughter so aptly put it, "It is definately not a multi-tasking kitchen!" Be sure when you remodel, that you can picture it EXACTLY as it will be!
The table and chairs were made by the Yarber Brothers in Glade Spring, VA. I guess you can tell that I collect jadite. We even did the tile on the floor ourselves. It was a supposed 6 week job that turned into three months of eating hot meals out of the microwave! What an adventure!

To everyone who has posted pictures or described their kitchens, I must say you're all very lucky! The pictures look so wonderful :)

As a University student currently living in a dorm, I'm only lucky enough to have very limited access to a kitchen. Next year in my apartment with some friends, we'll at least have a kitchen... but won't have the luxury of remodeling! So count your blessings ladies (... and maybe a few gentlemen)...

And to Leanne, your remodeling looks INCREDIBLE! I'm really into design and such, and when I'm out of school, my taste thus far suggests that my kitchen will be very similar to the one you have chosen.

Happy New Year, everyone! :D

Hopefully, this link will work. Funny this thread should be right at the top of Other Stuff tonight, because my kitchen is very recently renovated. We lived in our house nearly 13 years, and my DH is a cabinetmaker.....and it just got renovated this year (between May and now...there are a still a few finishing touches left for him, but I think he ran out of gas!). He did all of the work himself---ceiling, floor, new wiring, cabinets (design and building), tile, installation of soapstone counters....plumbing, wallpapering, making the new doors to the adjoining rooms.....the only thing he hired help for was painting the door frames! Gotta love him!
Thanks for letting me share; as you can tell, I'm still pretty excited about it. Katie
P.S. There are 8 pictures, I think you have to keep hitting next or previous to see the others.

I am stymied by how everyone else is actually posting pictures to these pages. Last night when I put the link on to the snapfish site, it went right to the pictures, but now when I am trying this from work, I get the same login menu that you got (and although I have an account, that's not my point, my point is to be able to let others see them). They ARE uploaded to that site, but I don't see any instructions on the site of how to make those pictures physically show up here. Can anyone explain the process? Katie

Katie, I know this works with pix uploaded at the Imagestation site; hopefully it will work for you, too.

Go to one of your pix and right click on the picture, then click on "properties" (should be on the bottom of the list)
In the box that pops up will be a url (http://). Highlight and copy the url, then when you post, use enhanced mode and click the "IMG" button, paste the url in the box, and hopefully that will bring up your picture....

keeping fingers crossed for you... :)

If this works, I owe you a million good vibes, Leslie! (If it doesn't work, I still send you good vibes for trying and will try imagestation instead of snapfish.)

This is the island. The top is Southern yellow pine. You also get a good view of the cork floor.

Actually, this is a better view of the top, isn't it?

Edited to say, gee it sure seemed to work (right click worked, I highlighed the url, I rightclicked again to where it said copy, used the enhanced mode, clicked the IMG button, pasted the url in the box, but then it just put the url on there and when I submitted the reply, it just gave gray boxes. Any idea of why that happened?

Okay, this time I'm trying one from imagestation. If it doesn't work, I'll know I should have made them smaller before I uploaded them to imagestation. This is a view of the sink wall, with a good view of the cork floor and the tin ceiling.

Thanks, Sue. The stove is a KitchenAid Proline Dual Fuel. I was so sick of my harvest gold electric stove that always had a burner here or there (you never knew where or when) that would go out, that I just adore this. This has a gas cooktop and an electric convection oven. (We have no natural gas where we live, so we got a propane tank). I'll try a couple more pictures now and see if they both fit. I have 8 pictures in all. One below will be a view of the island, and one will be the back part of the island which is higher and where we have stools to have our breakfast.

Is that an wall oven in your island? Great idea! I would love a wall oven as an extra in my kitchen but would loose some cabinets I think.

Katie, your kitchen ROCKS!!! Glad that Imagestation finally worked for you.

I so wish I had room in my kitchen to put in an island :( . Been trying to convince DH it's time to upgrade from the original 1965 kitchen and bring us into the 21st century -- all these wonderful photos have given me some great ideas. :D

Sue,
Yes it is. I've wanted two ovens for a long time and DH (who designed the kitchen) convinced me that this was the way to go so as not to lose cabinet space in another part of the kitchen. It's a Bosch convection oven, which was the shortest 24" oven they had, which he felt was important because he wanted to put a drawer above it for knives and cutting boards, plus there's a pull out cutting board (that can come all the way out and go on the island) that's above that drawer. Another cool thing about the island that he did was he put in hidden toe kick drawers along the bottom of that side of it. So you can use your foot to open these narrow drawers along the bottom that are hidden due to being in the toe kick space. I keep wire racks in one, an extra broiler pan in another, the BBQ tools in the one closest to the back door and the Cuisinart blades in another.
He tried to make the island "a baking island" for me, so that all things on the oven side of the island are related to baking. To the left of that oven is a cabinet that's not very deep (because the side end of the island on that side has an opening where my microwave is, with a big drawer under that for the toaster oven and toaster), which has the glass jars of flour, sugar, rice, etc. in it (each shelf is deep enough to hold one of the big jars). To the right of the stove is a narrow door, which, when you open it, has little pull out drawers that contain separate areas for my spices (and my DD made labels with "guide words", like "Allspice to cloves" for the outsides of the little drawers). To the right of that cabinet is a drawer with lots of sections, and each section is for specific things, like spatulas, measuring spoons, measuring cups, thermometer, etc. And under that is another door that within has 3 slide outs, 1 for mixing bowls, and the other two for other baking related things. For once in my life, everything has a specific place to go, which I need in order to keep organized.
I'll post some more pictures of other parts of the kitchen (and of the spice thing) tonight if I can.

Lesllie, YOU are the one who rocks for giving me the instructions. I thought it was a mystery that would elude me forever! Thanks again.

Here's the spice section I mentioned:

And the fridge wall...

And one last area for the favorite cookbooks:

That's more than enough, I'm sure.
It sure has been fun getting to see where we all do our cookin' thing! I wonder how each of us would do if we were dropped in each other's kitchens for a day...now THAT would be an interesting swap!
