Has anyone used this in place of regular buttermilk? If so, how were the results? Also, anyone know where I can find it? I've already looked at my local grocery store and can't find it there.
Thanks,
Krystal

I just got some at Bristol Farms last weekend. I haven't used it yet, but have read about it here. I hope I can stop thowing out bad buttermilk now.

I use it. I was tired of throwing unused spoiled buttermilk away when I just didn't get to use it as planned. I think it is great. It worked fine for me. In Weis grocery store it is located near powdered milk and evaporated milk, I believe. Hmm or was it in the baking aisle?

I use it frequently. It's always worked fine. I still buy regular buttermilk if I'm going to make enough things with it to use it up. I don't think it improves the food, but it "feels" better to use the real thing. :)

I always keep it on hand just in case I need some, but I still buy regular buttermilk if I think I can use it all up-I can't remember where I find it at the store, either the baking aisle or near the powdered milk. I also add a 1/4 cup or so (of the dry) to my mashed potatoes-I love what it does to them. (the brand I find here is Saco or something like that...). Sue

but when i don't have buttermilk i just add lemon juice to regular milk in my recipes.
what i like about lowfat buttermilk is its high protein content, so i try to get it every once in a while and make a string of buttermilk recipes, usually waffles/pancakes, muffins/cake, and a pureed soup.

Does anyone know how long he powdered stuff lasts? I've had some in the fridge for a while and I'd just as soon make some room if it's shot.
Thanks!

The stuff I got was near the powdered milk. I don't recall their being an expiration date on it - as long as it's kept in the fridge.

...until I opened it and it smelled funny. On the way to the trash I noticed a date stamped on the bottom of the container. I was keeping it in the cabinet, too.

I keep this in the fridge. I use it mostly in baked goods where I would not use much liquid buttermilk and would wind up throwing away more of it. It also lets me get up in the morning and decided to make some scones or something without having to run to the store. I add the powder (3-4 T per cup of liquid buttermilk in the recipe) to the dry ingredients and stir it in, then just use water in place of the buttermilk in the recipe.
It keeps in the fridge long enough that I have usually used it up before the expiration date -- maybe not by much, and maybe not this time. I haven't been baking that much. I find it in the baking goods section at one grocery store and with the canned or dry milk in another.
