How many ounces of solid chocolate equals 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips? I have a solid chocolate santa in my cupboard and I want to use it in a receipe that calls for chocolate chips.

I believe 12 ounces is equivalent to 2 cups of chips, so for 1 1/2 cups, you'd need roughly 9 ounces of chocolate Santa. :)

12 ounces of chocolate chips equal 2 cups, so you should need about 9 ounces of santa-----are you melting the chocolate, or mixing it into something? If you're mixing it into something, make sure you chop santa into pieces about the same size as the chips if you can.

Yeah, but I like your response better. There's no such thing as too much chocolate. :D

I believe a bag of choc. chips is 12 oz, and it's 2 cups. So 1 1/2 cups would be 9 oz. However, with chocolate, it you are adding it to a recipe, you don't have to be exact. A little more doesn't hurt. :D

Thanks for the quick answer. I am making Indoor Smores for a dog show I am going to this weekend. The chocolate will be melted. I need to use the chocolate before I eat all of it myself. I am still working on the 2lb box of See's candy my DH's client gave him. :)
Excuse me for barging in here-- and I hope it's for naught-- but are you sure Santa melts? The only reason I ask is that last year I tried to melt some chocolate mint kisses from TJ's for use in a recipe and the darned things wouldn't melt like cooking chocolate, even with the addition of shortening. There was apparently some additive in the candy which precluded it from melting in the same manner, and the best I could get was icky chocolate blobs.

Never thought about that. I guess I will just have to try. If it doesn't work, at least the santa will be out of my cupboard. :)

Actually, it needs to be specified if we are talking fluid ounces or weight ounces. There are 8 fluid ounces in a cup.

True, and a good point. But specifically for chocolate chips, I believe (and this is from the nutritional info listed on your typical bag of Toll-House chips) that 12 ounces is roughly 2 cups.
