My mom always always made us gargle luke warm salt water with vinegar in it...it sounds gross, but it is actually very soothing to you throat. ALso, instead of vinegar, you could add honey...tastes better.

thanks, I tried this and you're right it's gross! But I'll try anything, I need to talk! I've heard of salt water, but what does the vinegar suppose to do?

Tiger,
Sorry you're not feeling well. My Mom always had us gargle with warm salt water and peroxide. Sounds toxic, doesn't it! I'm sure it doesn't taste any better than the vinegar, but both probably act as an antiseptic. Last winter when I had strep throat twice, I got stuff at the drugstore called Alkalol. It's a soothing gargle that is also mixed with warm water. It doesn't taste good, but contains good ingrediants like eucalytus, menthol, and oils of cinnamon and spearmint.
Hope you're talking really soon!

Tiger, if you have a sore throat, the suggestions already posted may help, but unfortunately there really isn't anything that will help except complete voice rest. I had it a few years ago myself. I believe it is an inflammation/irritation of the larynx and vocal cords. It takes several days to resolve, and the less talking (or attempting to talk) you do, the better. Very frustrating when your job involves answering phones!! Hope you feel better soon..... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I had it this past summer - it was awful! Hopefully you don't have to do any singing this Christmas (if you're in a church choir or something) - it takes several weeks for your voice to fully recover. You should get your voice back at least a bit within a few days, though. My doctor told me that there was nothing I could do to speed along the process. I think it's one of those things God sends you every once in a while to teach patience!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Hope you feel better soon.

Tiger-Please don't laugh when I tell you this-drink some Rock and Rye before you go to bed. It is some kind of alcohol with fruit at the bottom. I am a teacher and have lost my voice to laryngitis on several occasions. My former principal recommended it and it works every time! It also gives you a good night's sleep.Good Luck!

I have it about once a year. It is terrible. Last time I froze real orange juice in ice cube trays and I sucks them all they long and it really helped. There is no treatment, only time will take care of that really soar throat. Good luck.

I was an actress for many years and have suffered my share of laryngitis. I have to emphasize NOT to use honey -- it will actually make your throat worse. The best thing is to gargle frequently (like every couple hours) with warm salt water and to avoid talking at all costs. Also, drink lots of water or herbal tea (no caffeine). I was also a little concerned about the Rock & Rye -- I was always told to avoid alcohol when I had laryngitis.
