Hi Jessica,

Some of the nice Women on this BB call their Husbands, "Dear Husbands," and use the abbreciation "DH."

Before becoming a member here I used to think DH meant "Designated Hitter" as in Baseball.

Speaking of Abbreviations, have you ever wondered why a word meaning to shorten up a word by using an abbreviation, the word being Abbreviate, has to be such a long word?

That's sweet.

As an English lit major, I should know why "abbreviation" is so long. But I don't.

Thank you for clearing that up. I never knew what it was. I had asked my husband and I think he gave me the "Baseball theory"also.

Oh, but if you're MAD http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/mad.gif at your husband, the "D" could stand for other things.....

Just have to add the little abbreviation I came up with for Brian. Since we are not married I can't use DH, and since he is 49, boyfriend seems a little high schoolish for me, so I call him my significant other. But, as that sometimes has its own meaning, I use "significant other Brian" or SOB http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Talk about the potential for the abbreviation standing for other things!!!!

Gina, I would just say "my other half" or if you're feeling generous, "my better half." I think you could get away with that, too...

You are all so funny! Even though I do not like the term SO at all I still find myself using it for some strange reason ... I guess we could just get married and solve that problem, huh? Or else use Phoebe s suggestion (which I love, BTW - it makes me think of (a) Jane Austen and (b) old movies - no, no, Phoebe, I m not saying you re from the Jane Austen era http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif )...though something tells me that my 27-year-old SO would not appreciate being called my gentleman friend one bit!

I've been known to use the term "my gentleman friend." Isn't that beautifully elegant? Doesn't it speak, somehow, of a bygone age of grace and respect? And, since I've just identified myself as having used the term, haven't I really, really dated myself? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

Cheers,
Phoebe

My 31 year old SO sometimes refers to himself as my 'manfriend!' http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif He says boyfriend is just too young sounding. I think 'manfriend' sounds really funny!

If you don't like DH or SO you could try these:

HHBL - Hunka, Hunka Burnin'Love

HISM - Hot Italian Stud Muffin - my husband recently signed an email with something to this effect...

Lindrusso,

Those are too funny! Here are a few more:

1. HWNNBO - He Who Need Not Be Obeyed (since sometimes people call me She Who Must Be Obeyed, this would be a natural companion - you know, from Rumpole)

2. Cabana Boy? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif That always brings a smile to people s faces ...

3. or simply The Man? (as in, I don t know what time we ll get there; I have to check with The Man).

The term SO is starting to sound better and better to me!
