View Full Version : Tempur-pedic pillows - anyone have one?

I've always loved the way these things feel - I can't resist smushing them everytime I walk past Brookstone in the mall. I'm seriously tempted to get one, but they are pretty expensive (around $100). We usually get down pillows, but I may switch this time. Does anyone have one that they love? Hate? There are a few knock-offs on the web - any experience?
Thanks!

I splurged on the real deal - and I love it!! Due to heavy computer work - I end up with a literal pain in the neck often - it was worse when I was in grad school on top of work. A doctor friend suggested it (he was a resident at the time- and said he got better rest with it -and it provided better support) I am so pleased I spent the money - my rationalization - -- I would spend close to $100 for attire to wear to a friend's wedding - - - for one day - why not spend it on something used nightly!!
I have one that's the real thing and one that was much cheaper at Linens N Things. Both are good. I don't know if the Tempurpedic one lost some height or if my neck curve or support need changed over time, but I find that the cheaper one is a little higher and gives more support. Most of the time it is more comfortable for me now, but sometimes the Tenpurpedic is better. They are the only pillows I sleep with. Period.
Test one and see how they fit you. I'm starting to wonder about one of the matress pads or the matresses. That's really bad! LOL

I have the real one and love it. I take it when I travel and tremble at the thought of forgetting it in the hotel. Hasn't happened yet. It is worth the money.

Does anyone know if this is the same one they sell at "Bed,Bath, and Beyond"?
I'm in the market for a new pillow...my husband still uses one he received while in the Australian Navy over 25 years ago...it has traveled the globe with him...I'm always trying to steal it :D He says it's filled with "shredded foam"...it's seen better days...but boy is it comfortable!

We've got a pillow which we really like. DH used to use it but I stole it from him. ;) Now I need to buy him one too.
We also have the Tempur-pedic mattress. I cannot recommend it enough. It is heavenly. I think I'm going to get a Tempur-pedic desk chair next.

I bought one (not sure of the brand) at Costco for DH about 2 months ago. He really likes it. I paid about $25 for it. Others at Linens' n Things were twice the price.

I bought one from bed, bath, and beyond and I hate it!! Hehe, maybe I should clarify. I love the way it feels and sometimes I slept good on it, but because of the way I sleep, I couldn't ever really get used to that curved neck support. My head would always scoot down and end up on the neck support rather than my neck, so then I would be laying there with no neck support.
My pillow has hardly been used at all. If you are interested, I will sell it to you very cheap. :)
Have you tried turning your pillow around so that you put the smaller curve under your neck? that might be a better fit.
The Tempurpedic is not made of shredded foam. It is a molded high-tech foam (wish I could remember what they call it -- the copycats sometimes use the term memory foam). It responds to both warmth and weight to mold its support to your body.
Susan, I have never heard of a desk chair! I am curious on the mattress: do you have to turn it? how heavy is it? Can you tell I have a monster mattress that I hate having to turn? :D

About the pillows - they do come in different sizes and thicknesses. You may find that the one you have is either too big or too small for you. The one we have is one of the smaller ones (either junior or small). It took a little while to get used to it, but now I love it.

I think the desk chair is pretty new. Since I work from home, I'm responsible for buying my own chair. I bought a cheapie one from Staples and it broke. I think this one might be worth the investment:

The mattress is pretty heavy (we've got a king), but you don't ever have to turn it! If you did, it would be awkward, because it's kind of floppy to maneuver.

I got one and I hated it. I start off sleeping on my side or back, but always end up on my stomach, and this pillow is not made for stomach sleepers! Basically, it's just too "hard". I prefer my feather pillow that I can scrunch into any shape. But I think the pillow is good, just not for the way I sleep.
Susan, thanks. We also have a king bed, but I wouldn't mind heavy so much if we didn't have to turn it. And I like the fact that I wouldn't get jostled by DH's turning and flopping (and ours was pretty good on that score).

OK - I picked up a knock-off at Costco. It seems pretty similar, and at $25, if I hate it, no biggie.
I took a nap with it today (with sick DD) - my first impression was that it was too small. I'm used to a king-sized pillow though (this one is standard size), but I was also "sharing" with her - not pleasant. I'll have to see how it does tonight.
I put the smaller hump under my neck and I think I prefer it that way. I'll experiment tonight and report back. :D Thanks Funnybone for letting me know Costco sold it!

Grace, you bring up an excellent point. When we first got it, I claimed it for my use and didn't like it. And I always slept on my stomach. I gave the pillow to DH. Now that I'm pregnant, and can no longer sleep on my stomach, I have stolen the pillow back from him and love it. It's definitely a good fit if you sleep on your back or side. But you're right; it's not so good for stomach sleeping.

Well, I got a semi-full night sleep on the new pillow (it's called "Novaform" - they have them and BB&B and Costco, but Costco is $10 cheaper). I love the way it feels, but it smells like a Sharpie! Weird. I think I'm going to let it sit outside during the day and see if that helps the smell. It just can't be good for you to inhale permanent marker-type fumes all night! :o

We have two Tempur-Pedic pillows that we got free with our queen size Tempur-Pedic mattress. I'm a side sleeper and I LOVE my pillow! I use it with the largest lump behind my neck and it gives great support. My husband is a back sleeper and found he was getting neck aches until he turned his pillow around, so he has the smaller part under his neck.
We missed our bed when we went on vaction for 10 days recently. Hotel pillows are always awful, but since we were flying with only carry-on luggage, we couldn't bring our pillows along. We were happy to come home to our Tempur-Pedic. I am a light sleeper and sleep so much better since my side of the mattress is undisturbed when my husband moves around -- I used to wake up every time he turned over. It's been well worth the cost.

For as long as I can remember I had always slept on my stomach. But in September 2002, I got in a minor accident and was rear-ended. My brother, a chiropractor, instantly gave me one of these pillows to help with the whiplash. For the first two nights it was hard to get use to, but now I don't know what I would do without it; I have never slept so well. Now I always sleep on my back or my side, and I also use a pillow between my knees. It is now months later and I mentioned to my brother that I no longer have lower back pains (that have plagued me for years) and he said it is because I have stopped sleeping on my stomach. So this pillow helped me to recover quickly from my accident and break a bad habit.

Can I make a recommendation?
I used to wake up with back and neck pain until I started sleeping on a buckwheat pillow last summer. It's really helped--I just love it!

Heidi, I can tell you from experience that these guys are not hard to pack, they scrunch down very well, I pack mine on the top and squish, they regain their shape. They add more weight then volume. Try it, you will enjoy your vacation more, don't forget to repack it.

I have a Tempur-pedic FLAT pillow. I wasn't sure I would be able to get used to the other one. This one is really nice. I can even scrunch it up a bit. Now I'm wanting the mattress. I have noticed no neck pain in the morning since using it.

I purchased one at Belks and I love it. I looked at the one at Brookstone and then went to Belks and I could not tell any difference at all! Theirs supposedly retails for $80.00, but they always have it "ON SALE" for $39.99...I absolutely love mine and am so glad I purchased it!

PS I would go to all of the stores that were mentioned, that you have access to, and do the "CHARMIN" test...."Please Mr. Whipple, Please don't squeeze the pillow!" I think you will find the difference is in the brand name only!

My then-boyfriend (now fiance)was able to get a group discount on a purchase of these mattresses. We each bought one and my sister/BIL did as well. We have all been dissatisfied. He and I each sold ours, and my sister probably will. It seems good at first but then it starts sagging, and it's bad news on the back. Also sleeps really hot. :(

For those of you with the tp...
Does this one look like the "real" thing? I wasn't sure about the contoured one...but here they have a "standard" pillow made from the same material...I need to get a new one soon...my "buck wheat" pillow is starting to get "old"...

I agree on testing out different ones -- they are wrapped in plastic so go ahead and stick it under your head and neck too. I have two different brands and they are different both in thickness and firmness. Find the kind that feels best to you (firmer or thicker will tend to be better for more side sleeping).

I have the tempur-pedic comfort pillow, and love it. However, my DH had night sweats, and I think it made our pillows smell.
Does anyone know if I could throw these in the washing machine and then air dry? I loked at their website, but couldn't find any info.
Thanks.

I bought two of the NovaFoam pillows from Linens 'N Things and laid them out for over a week...and the smell was still so bad that I had to take them back. :( I think they might have been comfortable, maybe a bit firm for my tastes, but the smell was awful!
My parents swear by the TP pillows but my problem is that usually my head is the only thing on the pillow, never the neck. So, the 'rise' in the pillow is what my head would be on!

I have three of them. ;) :)
The contour one, the "Mellenium" one (for side sleepers) and the "Comfort" one (I think that's what it's called? Shaped like a traditional pillow.) They are all really nice, and I sort of alternate between them! I am currently using the regular, "comfort" one. We also have the tempurpedic 10" bed and foundation. Some of the best $$$ we ever spent!

US TOO!! We have the Queen sized mattress and got the pillows with it. I LOVE THIS MATTRESS!! I used to wake up everytime my husband turned over...I sleep like a baby now. I also really like the pillows. It took a bit to get used to because I am a 2 pillow sleeper but I have not had shoulder problems since getting this bed and pillows.
I am a huge fan!

I really need to do something about my sore neck. So do all the brands smell? I can't deal with a stinky pillow, I just can't. I don't mind spending the money, just don't want to waste the money. I'm a side sleeper, so I think this might be the answer.

I just put it in a double pillowcase, and I can't smell it. I adore mine, and have 2 - one for home, one for the cottage (stashed in the linen closet so no-one else can use it!)

We have had ours for over 3 years and it is still firm like when we bought it.
I can see that it would not be for everyone...there is no "bounce" to this mattress. I like firm mattresses...so this is perfect for me. But it is not firm like sleeping on a board...it has give with your body. When we got ours they gave us a 30 day (it may have been 60 day) window to return it if we did not like it...We liked it:D

I got a pillow for Christmas and I love it as well. DH got me the one for side sleepers (it has the higher edge) and I am a stomach sleeper. However, I use the flat edge when I am sleeping on my stomach and when I rotate to my side, I flip the pillow and use the higher edge. I think it has decreased the tension in my neck and shoulders a lot. I just melt into it. No problem with smell. I use a pillowcase over it.

I should clarify that we've had our pillows for months - the smell is a new one! :)
Anyway, I called the company as Colleen suggested and they said there's nothing to do other than try to air it out. You can never get these wet.
For those of you that don't like the 'rise' or shape of some of these pillows, I really suggest the Comfort pillow. It's shaped just like a regular pillow, and has a different feel than the others. While not the best description, instead of a solid/hard mass of the material, it is made up of a lot of individualized pieces (kind of like a bean bag in a way). You can squish it around.

I had a memory foam pillow and it got so misshapen and never came back to its original shape so I quit using it, threw it out and went back to using a feather pillow. I also have another one that has the memory foam with batting or something around it and I quit using that one for now in hopes that it will come back to its original shape.

I hated the pillow so much, i returned it for my $60 refund. The first few hours of sleeping on it were nice, then when you woke up in the morning the darn thing was as flat as a pancake. My hubby said it was bc I have a big head. lol -Debbie

I have used one of the knock-off Tempurpedic pillows for years to sleep on. I occasionally sleep on my stomach, but I just turn the pillow so the corner is under my head, and there is a lot of breathing room, since the pillow has a definite edge to it. I have never had an odor problem with the pillow. I have a short neck, so the smaller hump is the one under my neck. No more morning headaches!:)
I have a travel-size TemPurPedic brand pillow, and it has really made a difference! I used to get horrific headaches from lumps in my shoulders! No amount of rubbing ever got rid of them, and I was miserable. One night, just as a lark, I hugged a pillow all night, and noticed that the lumps had diminished in size overnight! But hugging a big pillow, when you share a queen-sized bed, is not very friendly -- it hogs all the space! So I started hugging the travel tempurpedic! Now, it's been 5 years, and I don't have the lumps and headaches anymore, and haven't had them for almost 5 years! I take that one when I travel, and a hug a motel pillow, so my neck stays in alignment!:D

We have 2 that we got free when we purchase out tempurpedic mattress - love the mattress but I don't really care for the pillows. It was great support but I missed the softness and fluffiness of regular pillows. Also, pillowcases don't fit on them well (too big) which bugs me.

I got my foam pillow from Sam's Club. I initially had one from Costco but it had a contour and I found I did not like it (they now sell the regular shape). I have been using foam pillows for at least 20 years and hate it when I have to go back to a "regular" pillow. I found that it it did have a funny smell for a few days but after airing it out it quickly went away.

When we bought our mattress the salesperson told us to get the smell out squish it, squeeze it, compress it. The smell is trapped in the air inside the foam. It took about a week to go away. Should be easier to get the smell out of a pillow, especially since you could take it outside as well as squish it!

Bob, you might still like a different brand, or just a different pillow. I bought a Novaform contour pilllow from LnT to keep at my parents house and for some reason it's not nearly as nice (thick? or maybe dense??) and comfortable as the Novaform I bought at Costco. I think the cheaper ones aren't dense enough, and smoosh down too much, ruining the whole effect. Oh - and I will say that it took me about a week to get used to sleeping on mine, so that might also be part of the problem (although it sounds like you've had it that long). I was glad I stuck it out though, since I sleep much better now than I used to.
I don't have any actual experience with the actual Tempurpedic ones, but it seems like most people that buy them like them. I might go to Brookstone today to get a travel sized one, since I can't seem to find a one in anywhere else.

I replaced my old pillow with a Target knock-off, and it took a week to soften it up to where I could sleep on my stomach. I like to pull the pillow so the corner is under my cheek; I find it works better to not try to bury your face in the pillow... HTH:)
I also have an actual Tempurpedic travel pillow, which has become MUCH softer over the years -- I have to use the large-bump size on that one... (I have a very short neck, so I use the small-bump side on the knock-off pillow...)

Seeing this thread reminded me of something I keep meaning to ask. Does anyone know of a good source to buy pillowcases for the contoured pillows? Preferably in a high thread count? The ones I've found online have only been 200. (My princess tendencies come out when it comes to bed linens.:o) Right now I'm just using a regular pillowcase tucked around it, but I'm tired of waking up with wrinkles from all the folds.

My pillow is made from organic natural rubber from rubber trees. No smell at all and the shape has stayed the same. It is the same shape as the memory foam cervical pillow. I love it. I no longer get neck/shoulder pain. It was expensive, however.
