View Full Version : Canadians: where to find FF tortillas???
I have lived in both Quebec and Ontario and have been unable to find FF (or even LF) tortillas. Has anyone had success finding them here??

just bumping this up for you julie, since it appears that someone is dredging up all the old polls again.
Hi Julie! I am surprised you are having a problem finding tortillas-both the corn and flour varieties are readily available in every grocery store I have been to here in Victoria. They are usually in two places-at the deli counter and in the dairy (?) section. Hope one of our easterners can tell you where to find them in your area!
Hi Julie! I've never seen FF tortillas here, either. My grocery store (Save-On Foods/Overwaitea) carries low-fat ones, but usually I go for the whole wheat ones instead - there isn't too much fat, and the extra fibre is worth it (plus I like the taste of them!). Even across the line in Bellingham, I haven't been able to find them for awhile.
Let us know if you find them!

Just curious, what do you mean by "someone is dredging up all the old polls again". I have problem translating this one.
For your question, haven't found any in NB

there are polls from months ago that are appearing again because someone did a search for "poll" and voted in all of them. when you vote, the poll gets bumped to the top and no one knows who bumped it to the top because the last person to reply isn't necessarily the last person to vote.
then, people come to the board today and think it is a new poll so they vote and so the polls keep staying at the top and therefore keep bumping down all of the important/interesting threads.

Back to fat-free tortillas... are you sure you aren't being deceived by Canadian labelling? In the US something can be called "fat free" if it has less than a certain amount of fat, but in Canada if there's any fat at all, it can't be.
So whole-wheat tortillas, which have just a smidgeon of fat from the wheat germ, would never be labelled fat-free. However, if you check the actual nutrition information, you may find that the fat content of the tortillas you can get (whole wheat or otherwise) is really negligible.
I think the President's Choice tortillas and wraps are low fat, speaking of specific Canadian brands.

I don't live in Ontario any more - but (if I can remember) I am pretty sure President's Choice carries a FF tortilla, but it wasn't available in the Zehr's in Strathroy - so I often went in to London. Perhaps you may just need to go to a larger city? or different store.
I remember I also liked to buy the shade-grown organic coffee, but could get it only once in a while in Strathroy. So, I ended up in London more than I really liked to stock up on products I couldn't get in such a small town!
CompassRose, that's an excellent point! Maybe someone in the US can tell us how many grams of fat are in a LF or FF tortilla that they buy in their stores. I'd be interested to see how it compares to our tortillas.
BTW, have all the Canadians heard about the new labeling laws? They sound great - apparently the best in the world - but my only complaint is they're giving companies something like five years to comply!!! Give me a break...most of these companies also sell in the States, so it's not like they don't know the nutrition info...they just choose not to include it on the label so we're tricked into buying it!! Oh well, at least it's a start!
I have small whole-wheat tortillas in my freezer, and they have 3.1 grams of fat each. That doesn't sound like a lot, but if I'm making fajitas, I can easily eat three, which means I'm getting almost 10 grams of fat from the tortillas alone!
I also have white-flour large tortillas, and they have 4.8 grams of fat each. I guess those are the better option, because I would only eat one of them (or maybe one and a half...)
Julie :)
Perhaps you might want to try making your own tortillas. I can't imagine it taking very long. I recall seeing several recipes for fat-free flour tortillas online. There may even be one here on the BB.
