Help! I need some cheering up! An arctic blast has wiped out my electricity since Christmas and I've been stuck at a hotel since then while my beautiful new 11 cup food processor sits at home, dying to be tested! We have between 9 and 12 people staying in 2 suites and we are all about to pull each other's hair out! I keep telling myself that it could be worse - we could be cold and hungry. My in-laws don't even have water. Much more of this and I think I'll go crazy! Any others in the same boat? I know lots of southerners were hit pretty hard. This is our worst ice storm ever, says the recordkeepers.
Can't wait to eat some real food; continental breakfast and pizza is getting old! Christmas leftovers would be wonderful - Calgon take me away!

Abby- I'm in NJ, supposedly we're supposed to get about a foot of snow between tonight at tomorrow night. We'll see if they're right this time. I am hoping we don't lose power. We are getting oil delivered as I type this, but without electricity, it won't matter too much. I sure do feel for you, though. That has got to be crazy. It's just so much nicer to be home for the holidays. I hope that you are back in your own house soon!

Oh Abby, I feel your pain! I was stuck in a studio apartment with 3 other people during the Blizzard of 96 with 3 cans of ginger ale, a bag of Cheetos, and a box of Rice-a-Roni. It was insane!! I hope you're back at home soon, because the longer you're there, the shorter everyone's nerves must be getting.
Jodi
P.S. MrsReber -- I'm in NJ, too, and hoping the same thing you are!

Hi Jodi and Mrs. Reber,
I am in NJ too and while I don't like winter, I am looking forward to being snowed in a bit this weekend with my new hubby. He travels all the time and fortunately is home for the holidays. In preparation for the big storm, last night I made one of my favorite CL recipes-- Mediterranean Chickpea, Tomato and Pasta Soup (October '98), also a great recipe for Spinach, Mushroom and Black Bean Burritos I got off the Epicurious site. Next on the hit list is Chicken Tetrazini from the Ooey Gooey Brownies issue earlier this year (forget which month) just in case we have decide to invite some neighbors over!? I'm definitely caught up in the hype of this storm!
Abby- hang in there! Do you have any good books you can read? Maybe you can hide in the lobby and get some quiet time!

Sorry to hear about your situation, Abby! Hope you get to go home soon! Have you planned what recipes to test out your new food processor with?

Abby-Sorry to hear of your predicament! I'm in PA, and we're due to get blasted with almost a foot starting tonight. Luckily, we're all stocked up on food and hopefully, the electricity will stay on. Hang in there!

Abby, I definitely feel for you! Any idea when you expect power? We were without power for about 4 days during a heat wave in July 1999..NOT FUN! I wish I knew how to do graphics..where is MamaSue? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif I know, a pathetic attempt at cheering you up!!!! I am in New Jersey waiting on the storm with everyone else..finally, a decent snowstorm! I won't believe it until I see it!Hang in there...and cheer up! I was at home without power..that means no tv, computer,ac, videos for the kids...at least you have phone and internet service...maybe you could order a home cooked meal on-line!
p.s. How are you feeling, Mrs.R?
Abby,
I hope you can escape soon. Even in sunny Southern California we're not assured of power. We've had numerous power shortage warnings for weeks. Now they want to increase rates by 30% and are taking one of our generators down for "routine maintenance."
Goo dluck with the next storm.
Everyone - Thanks for the encouragement! We heard today that the it could be as late as Jan. 5 until we get power restored!!!! Good news though - my mom got her power back this evening so we'll probably be able to move to her house 'til we get our juice back. Good luck to y'all who are expecting the big blizzard. I wish we would have gotten snow instead of ice. Parts of our city look like a tornado struck it because trees are falling over and snapping due to the weight of the ice on them.
DH and I are escaping tonight for dinner and a movie. Thanks again!

Abby-
I'm in Pa and excited about the big snowstorm coming. After a busy week of entertaining I'm looking forward to be snowed in!
But I feel so bad for you! Look at it as an adventure. 5 yrs ago we were hit with a big snowstorm. I was pregnant with my son but didn't know it. I work at a hospital and I volunteered to go in if they could get me there. They came out with an army truck and I worked hard for over 24 hrs straight. I was delerious.
Sounds like you're taken it in stride. Good luck!
At least you found a hotel with power and a computer to find the BB! If I were snowed in, I wouldn't have spent the last 3 days trying to find a replacement for the robot dog Santa brought my 4 yr old but that didn't work. Ditto the remote control car my brother's family gave him and the scanner DH gave me. But looks like my 3rd dishwasher is a keeper. I am feeling electronically challenged. And then some. Toss me a blanket!
To be fair, my older son's Lego Chess computer game works great (I haven't touched it yet). He loves it. He thinks the tutorial portion can teach me to play with him. Now why didn't we see that coming?

I was without power for 3 days 2 years ago and it isn't fun. Someone told me about a new generator from Coleman sold at Home Depot. They have several versions from 3K-10K. It works off of your natural gas lines. Just a little too pricy for me.
