hi--i had 2 egg whites i wanted to use & this recipe looked very interesting--so i set out all the ingredients & made the dough & out in pan & added the topping==popped in oven--then saw the 1/3 cup brewed coffee sitting on the counter! too late now! also i may have added 2 tsp baking powder instead of 1 1/2. all this trauma just to save 2 egg whites. well--it rose beautifully & was delischious===only just like a german chocolate cake--the topping was very good==goes to show all our mistakes don't end up in the garbage/

I looked around for this recipe but could find it. I looked on the recipe finder and in my mastercook. Where is the recipe located?
Thanks for the review. It sounds good!

Hi Valchemist,
Here's the recipe.
Mocha Coffee Cake
TOPPING
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
3 tbsp semi-sweet chocolate chips
4 tsp cocoa powder
CAKE
1 1/4 cup sugar
1/3 veg oil
1/3 cup brewed coffee
1 egg
2 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 baking soda
2/3 cup low-fat sour cream
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a small bowl, mix together ingredients for topping and set aside. In large bowl, whisk together sugar, oil, coffee, egg, egg whites and vanilla. In another bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, baking powder and baking soda. Stir dry ingredients into the coffee mixture, alternating dry ingredients with the sour cream. Pour batter into a prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
NOTES: the book says to use a 9 inch square pan. I found this recipe made a lot of batter so you might need a 13 x 9 pan. I made mine into muffins and made 17 muffins. The topping is quite tasty, and the texture of the cake is quite moist. As well, you'll have some topping left over, so you might want to reduce the amount.

thanks! sounds really good! I bet you can't taste the coffee, though. even in recipes where a cup of coffee is used in a chocolate cake, you can't taste it. it is just there to enhance the chocolate. (maybe this recipe is somehow different though since they are calling it mocha.)

You can't. At least I couldn't when I made it. I too find that with 'coffee' desserts when paired with chocolate. I wonder why? Although the Irish Cream Cheesecake from the same book had a slightly higher taste of coffee, but not enough. Good all the same! ;0)
