View Full Version : Do you really eat ice cream?
Ms. Chevious

I see a lot of comments about ice cream on the boards and I'm just curious - do you really mean ice cream or do you mean frozen yogurt, light ice cream, etc.? I haven't even ventured near real ice cream in 15 years but out of habit I do tend to say it, but I always mean frozen yogurt. (Like "this crisp would be great with ice cream." though I would then go top it with fro yo, soy ice milk, etc. NEVER real ice cream!) There's no way ice cream is even getting past my front door!
So CLers - do you REALLY eat ice cream? Really, even when watching your weight?

Real ice-cream here.
Breyer's in the black container or Hagaan-Dazs :D :D :)

Oh boy do I eat ice cream!:D Sure, I eat frozen yogurt, ices, low fat ice cream...but given the opportunity (or if one doesn't present itself, I'll create it!) I will happily scarf down a Ben & Jerry's or Hagen Daz without a moment's regret!! Life is too short not to eat the good stuff now and then!

I love the Healthy Choice (sugar free), I have even tricked friends who thought it was the real thing:) I haven't come across a flavor I don't like yet! But I am a plain old Vanilla lover!

Absolutely - real ice cream all the way, once a week on Thursdays when the local (fantastic!) ice cream shop sets up in the lobby of our building. :D I can't be bothered to waste calories on light ice cream, although frozen yogurt is OK. But personally, I'd rather have the real stuff less often than the mediocre stuff all the time. A small scoop of ice cream once a week is NOT going to hurt me. A pint once a day WILL. It's all about moderation....
And Kim, you meant Brenham. :)

I never eat frozen yogurt or light ice cream (okay, I occasionally get a frozen yogurt at the airport - for some reason it just tastes better there :) ). I rarely eat regular ice cream though either. We just never buy it for the house, unless we are having some sort of party or get together. I would much rather spend my calories on the real stuff though - IMO there is no comparison in taste.

Oh yeah, real ice cream! I have been toying with making my own, and for the most part I try to keep that low fat.
But, I do have a few flavor's of Braum's Light that i like just as well as the real stuff--After Dinner Mint and some sort of Toffee. Yum.
Eva has it right-->It's all about moderation!! :D

We pretty much always eat "real" ice cream, though I will occasionally buy Edy's "light." If we go out for ice cream, it is always for the real stuff! :)
I sometimes buy frozen yoghurt, but I usually eat the real thing. When I make my own, I will cut down on the fat because I think 2 cups of heavy cream is just too much.

We only eat REAL ice cream if it is the homemade handcranked kind that we might make once or twice in the summer. Otherwise I buy light ice cream or occasionally frozen yogurt. And we only buy ice cream in the summer! I have never understood eating ice cream in the winter!

I actually like sorbet and sherbet, so I don't have "real" ice cream around very often, but I do occasionally have sorbets or sherbet. When I do have ice cream, it is absolutely the real thing. :D
Unless I have a taste for a Dairy Queen twist cone with crunchies on it

We either eat the real thing or light (low fat) ice cream. And sometimes I make ice cream either way, but haven't tried making frozen yogurt.

Yes! Real ice cream. Though I loved B&J's Chocolate Cherry Garcia, which was a frozen yogurt, but they apparently stopped making it. So I had to go back to regular Cherry Garcia ice cream. I make sorbets at home.

Don't think I could really enjoy ice cream, thinking about all the fat! We get FY and LF ice cream. Don't mind it at all. Currently enjoying Publix's low fat Butterscotch Ripple.
We also love gelato. Some of the Haagen daz flavors aren't too high in fat, such as the chocolate. It's 7 grams, which isn't too outrageous. So chocolately and creamy!

I have a tiny scoop of the real stuff (about 1/4 cup -- Blue Bell Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough) and a small scoop (about 1/2 cup) of one of the good light ice creams (Edy's, H.E.B. brand).
Blue Bell is great. It's premium ice cream, but not super premium. Most 1/2 cup servings have between 170 and 220 calories (10-12 grams of fat). That's not nearly as bad as Dreamery or Haagen Daz (270-350).

Definitely real ice cream in my house. The only thing that could possibly be considered "fake" would be the Breyer's lactose-free vanilla for my brother. However, my favourite has to be frozen custard. Yummmm.

Light ice cream! We love Healthy Choice too and sometimes the Edy's Light. Our favorite is Caramel Fudge Brownie - vanilla ice cream with a swirl of caramel and chunks of brownie. It is so friggin good. I don't even notice the "light" taste and the real stuff tastes like butter to me now, sits in my stomach like a rock.
In the summer we do sometimes go out for Ben and Jerrys.

The real stuff.
Friday at our house is Ice Cream Night (IF the girls behave) and we either go to Brewster's, Dairy Queen, or Baskin Robbins. There is one more place in downtown Marietta that we've never tried.
Brewster's is the current favorite.

I will eat real ice cream - sure! However I do find that one spoon right out of the container is just as satisfying as a whole bowl. I have a container of B&J's "One Sweet Whirled" that I have been working on for a week now. I go in spurts though. It may be a few months later that I do this again. I don't feel the desire to eat ice cream all the time.

I love sorbet and real premium ice cream. My husband eats a pint of Ben and Jerry's per week and I probably go through a pint every month or so- usually just a few bites satisfy me because it's so rich and sooooo good!
I've never tasted a light ice cream that I liked well enough to eat. Frozen yogurt is okay but it has that tangy yogurt taste that makes it clear it isn't ice cream. The one frozen yogurt I really like is Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie- but it's not particularly light.

At all times there is a container of Ben and Jerrys in the freezer. If we eat any, we each have a scoop each. Sometimes we eat the container in a month sometimes it gets thrown out because we didn't eat enough. I ditto everything Eva said, moderation is the key to life!:D

historically, i was never a big "ice cream" eater...
this changed when my friends/roommates opened a frozen yogurt shop in charlottesville, va. i became addicted to frozen yogurt! i would have it AT LEAST once a day. i love the soft serve texture.
now that i no longer live in charlottesville, my addiction faded. BUT, i do still crave soft-serve yogurt or ice cream regularly. my favorite local choice is carvel fat-free vanilla. i've tasted my hubby's regular vanilla, and i must admit, i like the ff just as much. so, fat-free it is.

Same here. Although I never noticed a taste difference with light ice cream - in fact, I've never noticed any weird taste with light products. I just don't think about it I guess.
My personal favorite is Turkey Hill fat-free Mint Cookies and Cream ice cream. I also like their fat-free Vanilla Fudge. And for plain fat-free vanilla yogurt, I like Edy's. Yummy!

I have 3 pints of Haagen-Daz in my freezer now so I guess you could say I eat the real thing.
I have been known to have frozen yogurt on occasion.
My SIL is a dentist in New Hampshire and one of his patients works for Ben & Jerry and one day brought him 24 pints. Fortunately for my daughter's waistline he gave most of it to his staff.
P.S. I think this should have been a poll question

My main issue is the texture. it has to be firm and dense and cold. if it has a bunch of air whipped into it so the texture is 'marshmallowy" I don't like it. Hagen daz fro-yo vanilla is the best! I think the richer ice creams taste greasy although I do like an occasional B&R cone with jamoca almond fudge. Starbucks used to have a fabulous frappucino ice cream that was low fat besides, but it has disappeared from the market except in bars which are not the same thing.
In the midwest we used to get 'frozen custard" that was fabulous. I don't know if it is still available. It was amazingly good. I think it was fairly rich but that was worth it!

Valerie226, you bet frozen custard is still around in the midwest! I think Kopps here in Milwaukee is the best. There is always some type of ice cream in my house, and it's usually regular, although from time to time I will buy light or frozen yogurt. But nothing beats fresh frozen custard. I know it's really bad for you, but as other's on this thread have said, everything in moderation, and life's too short not to enjoy the good stuff!

Do I eat ice cream?! H*ll yeah! And boy do I eat it! ;)
I do also eat light ice cream (Edy's) and frozen yogurt. Mmmmm ice cream............
Life without real ice cream would not be worth living.
Definitely my favorite food. If I'm out, I always get the real stuff. At home, I alternate between "light" (Hood/Breyer's/Edy's) and regular, although I try to stay away from the "super-premiums." I used to like Skinny Cows, but seem to have lost my taste for them.
I never get non-fat or no-sugar -- I think those definitely taste funky. I also dislike frozen yogurt. (My MIL used to buy store-brand, non-fat, no-sugar frozen yogurt and serve it when we visited -- I think she thought she was doing me a favor  -- I cannot tell you how vile that stuff was.)
And yes, I've eaten it even when I was on "diet plans" trying to lose weight -- when I was in my 20s, I once lost 35 lbs., while eating a 1/2 cup (I measured) of Haagen-Dasz every night.
Nothing wrong with ice cream in the winter -- one thing I love about New England, it's always ice cream season here. :)

Cherise..... Yes, it was Kopp's in milwaukee. thought that might be too specific for a big BB like this. I'm trying to remember where it was & I'm drawing a blank. South of where I lived, like maybe bluemound road?? I lived on what was then the northwest side of town.
I was watching "Best of" on food network & they were going on about Leon's having great frozen custard. I don't remember that place at all , but I sure remember kopp's. We usually had a half gallon of vanilla in the freezer. That spoiled me for regular grocery store ice cream which always seems too sweet & whipped up with air. Tell me where it is so next time I go visit family & can hang out there!. Out here, no one has heard of frozen custard at all. Tell me the truth, how rich is that stuff??

I eat and love regular ice cream, and fat-free fruit sorbet. To me, they're two different pleasures. I eat sorbet pretty regularly as dessert, especially in the summer. (It can be a meal during the dog days of August:o.) I just adore the intensely fruity flavor and how light and refreshing it is. I've never thought of it as a replacement for ice cream, but rather as a cool, fruity treat. I have ice cream less regularly, but when I do it's the real thing. And preferably mint chocolate chip.:) Like others have said, everything in moderation. I've never cared for frozen yogurt, soy ice cream, or light ice cream. I've always found them to be too sweet, or to have a funny taste or texture.

With absolutely no apologies: I am an icecream eater. I even eat CUSTARD... double yum.
Is this seriously shocking? ;) I live in Wisconsin, after all.
PS
There are three KOPPS locations here in Milwaukee. One on Bluemound Rd., one out on SILVER SPRING Rd. (east side), and one on the south side (on 76th Street?).... LEON's is also down on the south side, though I don't remember the exact location.

I eat ice cream. If I had my way I would eat it every day. I don't care what kind it is, I'll eat it all. I've even had to eat ice milk at my grandparent's house!
My preferance is regular ice cream (not light or anything like that). Recently I'm not on a Ben & Jerry's kick- too much junk in it. But that changes. My preference right now would be Amy's (local texas brand) and then Blue Bell (another local). Has anyone else tried the new Blue Bell chocolate cookie dough kind? It's called Good Heavens and it sure is good. Don't bother with the new Birthday Cake flavor. It's just boring vanilla and chocolate with candy confetti.
I like frozen yogurt. And it's usually what I buy at the store so I can feel semi-virtuous. I also buy sherbert and really enjoy that. Sorbet is excellent too, but it can be expensive. Right now I believe there's a half gallon of Blue Bell strawberry frozen yogurt in the freezer and Hershey's Dark Chocolate syrup in the fridge to go with it :D

Hey Valerie226, glad to hear from a former Milwaukeean. I'm not sure if the place you are thinking of is Kopps or not...there is a Kopps on Bluemound Rd, but it is waaaaay out in Brookfield, like 188th Street (Brookfield Rd). It moved there about 10 years ago(?) from its previous location. There is also another custard place on Bluemound, just off of 76th, which is Gilles. They have really good custard too, but Kopps will always be my fave! And it is really, really rich. It actually coats the inside of your mouth from the richness (ok, from the fat), but it is heaven to me. As to actual calories/fat content, I have no idea. In this case I prefer to stay ignorant. Leon's is on S 27th, just off Oklahoma. I saw that episode too, but have never eaten there. Sorry not to reply sooner, but I am at work and just got a chance to check back on this thread. Hope you get a chance to get back to Kopps next time you're in town!
Valerie226
05-08-2003, 02:05 PM
Cheries & loreili... I got my "facts" a little twisted. You are correct, it was Gilles where we usually got the frozen custard, but we went to Kopp's too. I think Kopps used to be at around center st & Lisbon? around 60th or so? this is truly ancient history as I remember I was in the back seat of my parents car with my sister, fighting for the scraps my parents would give us. this is close to 50 years ago. we got the gigantic kopp's cheese burgers & frozen custard. But I think this was before Brookfield was more than a cow pasture! I truly had never heard of leon's but 27th & oklahoma was way out of my neighborhood.
as to actual calorie content, sometimes it is better not to know!!. I've been back to milwaukee but never back to either of these places.

I agree with all of you who like only the real stuff! I think that low fat or light ice cream is usually way too sweet and just is not worth the calories or my time to eat because it has a terrible texture and does not taste good to me. Besides, you can only eat a small amount of the really rich kind of ice cream anyway, far less than you would of poor quality or low fat ice cream. Double Rainbow Ultra Chocolate is great! For those in the Boston area, Toscanini's Kulfi ice cream is really good too.

Oh yeah, babe, the real stuff here too.
However, it's more a special treat, something we eat 2-4 times a month in the summer, sometimes much less. I can't keep the stuff in my house or I'd eat it every day! :o If I want something ice cream like that I can keep in my freezer, I'll get fudge pops or sorbet or something else that is low in fat. I save the real stuff for a trip to the ice cream shop. :)
We just got a Cold Stone Creamery in Fort Wayne - they have several different flavors of ice cream and a zillion different mix-ins which they mix into your ice cream by hand. YUM! The ice cream is not the very best I've ever had, but the mix-ins more than make up for that - my favorite is chocolate ice cream with brownie chunks and almonds.
I'm hungry..... :D

Usually I have light ice cream on hand (my favorites are Turkey Hill and Edy's Grand Light). Once in a while I will splurge and buy the "real deal." I haven't had Ben & Jerry's in such a long time, but I treated myself recently and was able to stretch out the pint to last a whole week! (in college, we used to eat a pint just about every night! )
Since DH can't do dairy, he's been experimenting with various soy products. We just bought Tofutti Chocolate Cookie Crunch- OMG!! Yummmmmm! Delish, though so NOT low in fat.

I love ice cream! I only buy the real thing but eat it in moderation. I go through phases where I want a bowl every night and then won't have any for weeks. My favorite is Blue Bunny Premium which is made here in Iowa. I also like sherbets and sorbets and eat them on occasion too. My DH just loves Ben and Jerry's Wavy Gravy but we can't find it around here. Maybe they quit making it.
You guys are making me hungry! :D

Funny that this question should come up. I just got back from a run to 7-11 to get Ben & Jerry's for a bunch of people in the office. I got the "One Sweet Whirled' for myself. Very good. I will admit that I ate about 1/3 of the carton! But since I only eat ice cream about 1x per month, I won't sweat it! I agree with Eva (and all the others), moderation is the key.

If I'm going to have all those calories, it's going to be the real thing. After all, you just trade fat grams for sugar grams if you choose lowfat or frozen yogurt, anyway - you're still getting the same number of calories. And sugar calories are just as bad for your body as fat calories, so you might as well go for the tasty stuff :D . My favorite ice cream would have to be a tossup between Cow's ice cream (a PEI tradition) and Graeter's (and I knew about it before Oprah did ;) ).

Oh Clara, Cow's is incredible, isn't it! I remember going to visit family on PEI as a kid (I was actually born there!) and getting Cow's ice cream. When I was in Vancouver last year, I ate a ton of it - every day I had to have some. I really wish they would put one in Toronto. But their marketing stuff is amazing! For those who aren't familiar with it, check out Cows (http://www.cows.ca) .

All of the above
I have no problem avoiding cake, cookies, pie, etc., but I love ice cream and always have. I don't keep it in the house because we would eat it quickly, so for home I buy sorbet, although lately we have been cutting back on sugar so I have not bought any. We go out for ice cream every 2-3 weeks in the summer and I get one scoop, or a child-sized scoop if I am feeling extra-virtuous. I don't like all the chemicals in low-fat and FF ice creams and decided a while back to stop buying them. I would rather have the good stuff on occasion.
Like Eva and others said, moderation is key.
Oh, and once a summer, usually after a hot, nasty day of yardwork, I go to DQ for my annual Peanut Buster Parfait. I refuse to believe one DQ a year will kill me.

Ice cream has always been my biggest weakness and I'm not good at moderating the portion size with it, so for me, I always go for the low-fat, no-fat, &/or low cal stuff. I still love it all so I do not feel I am missing anything. Also, I'm another who can only do a frozen treat on warmer summer days. (Although I did get sorbet last winter when I was coming down with sore throat and it tasted pretty darn good then).

Hi,
I eat both kinds. I love real ice cream and when I can plan for it in my eating plan, I will indulge. However, there are some really good LF frozen yogurts and light ice creams on the market. I too am a Turkey Hill frozen yogurt fan.
Someone mentioned that the calories are the same, just the sugar and fat contatent are different. I wish that were true! If so, I'd always choose the real thing. You can get a good vanilla or chocolate frozen yogurt or light ice cream for around 100 calories per half cup. There is a reason I bring this up. If I'm serving a cobbler or pie or something that plain vanilla or chocolate goes well with, I'll often serve the LF variety to save myself a couple of WW points. The better varieties, take on a good creamy texture when they soften a bit. This approach also works when making an ice cream confection, such as a sundae or ice cream pie, where additional high cal ingredients are included.
If I just want the ice cream "experience" then I try to save up points so that I can indulge. Having said all this, I don't often indulge in either kind. I find it curious that many who are in the "Real Ice Cream Only" camp assume that those who eat light varieties indulge more often and eat larger quantities. Interesting.
Besides, you can only eat a small amount of the really rich kind of ice cream anyway, far less than you would of poor quality or low fat ice cream.
No matter which kind I choose, I never eat more than about 1/2 cup. Maybe that's just me. Now potato chips... that's another story:rolleyes:

What a topic, all the cheeseheads turn out... I love ice cream, was raised on that Bryers in the black box with the vanilla bean specks. And, of course, I do live in the state where frozen CUSTARD is the norm. Kopps in Milwaukee is the best. It was a favorite high school hangout of mine... LOVE that place. Don't even get me started on the cheeseburgers the size of dinner plates. (The one I used to frequent is on Silver Spring, by bayshore mall). So delicious, practically like a piece of chesecake in every scoop. But moderation it has to be now that I don't have a 17 year old metabolism anymore. Anyone tried those skinny cow sandwiches? They do the trick. My favorite flavor is strawberry.

YUM YUM!
I LOVE ice cream...I really do. I used to eat the ff frozen yogurt and WW smart ones and silhouettes and all that stuff all the time (like a few times a week :o ). Now I have ice cream maybe twice a month and it's always the real stuff.
My faves:
B/Jerry!!!!!
Chunky Monkey
NY Super Fudge Chunk
Oatmeal Cookie Dough
(I'll have to keep an eye out for the whirled one laughs and laughs...it sounds right up my alley!!!!)
The only other brand I've tried that even comes close to B/J for me is Edy's Dreamery...my favorite is Tiramisu flavor. It is AN OMG experience :D

I'm in the "if it tastes good, I eat it in moderation camp".
I make all of our ice cream, and most of it is full-fat, but oh so yummy. That is not to discount the wonderful PeanutButter Chocolate Chip ice cream that Jewel (where is she?) came up with. It is low-fat, but very delicious. That said, if I am out I love frozen yogurt, non-fat, full-fat, whatever. I just don't make that at home, at least not yet....

I have a cold and an awful sore throat. I told DH that if he saw any Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough ice cream while he was out, the only humane thing to do was to give it a home. Mission accomplished!

Love it, love it, love it. That's why I run! To eat the real thing. I've been buying Starbucks Coffee Almond Fudge. It has all my favorite flavors in one dish. And it's easy to find now. Before I could find it I bought Ben & Jerry's and Edy's--also very good and for different flavors I'll buy them.

My new favorite is Dreamery brand "Nutz Over Malt". It is sooo good.

Ben & Jerry's has a new "limited edition" flavor out. It's chocolate choclate cookie - essentially chocolate ice cream with oreos and fudge. Oh my God, it is so good. :) :) But I passed it up in the store last night because I have no self-control, and the last time I had it, both me and Alex had a stomach ache.;)

Amazing. Healthy, smart, productive people actually eat real ice cream.
Go figure. ;)
Disclaimer: That is not meant to say that those of you who do not eat real ice cream are not healthy, smart and/or productive. :D

We eat the real icecream. Breyers in the black box or Hagen Daaz.
I've even checked the fat grams and 2 different brands before to make sure I chose the one with the most fat!
We don't have it that often so when we do I want the good stuff.
But I don't eat it enough to have a favorite.
