It was the first time I tried it, actually. My friend had made it not long ago and told me it was great so I had to try it myself. I bought a 4 pound pork shoulder about a month ago and finally decided to defrost it and make it. I asked my friend how she made it- she kind of used the Joy of Cooking recipe, only instead of just roasting the pork shoulder, she boiled it for 3 1/2 hours in the spices they suggested- I think it was brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, cracked peppercorns and a little seasoned salt. When it was very tender and falling off the bone, I drained the liquid and separated the meat from the bone, removing all the fat that I could. Then I poured about 2 cups of bbq sauce on it and wamred it through. I'm not too big on pork, but my husband loved it and thought it was great. I served it on sandwich rolls with french fries and a ceasar salad. It was easy to make and I figured since I wasn't planning on going anywhere, it was a good day to make it. I believe you could probably place the liquid and spices in a crockpot and cook it all day that way. It would take alot longer than boiling, but you would be able to leave the house.

I would definately try cooking it in the crockpot. Last week I made the Thai-style pork crockpot dish that was deemed "orgasmic" on this board. Anyway, it was great and the pork was so tender that it shredded as I was mixing in the peanut butter. Isn't pulled pork the same as shredded? My DH used the leftovers for sandwichs.

I cooked the pork on low for about 8 hours, as the recipe instructed. However, I bet it was done before that. I'm new to crockpot cooking. I used a pork roast with a bone and the meat just fell off the bone. Very tender!

Pulled Pork Barbecue
4 lb pork roast
2 onions, sliced
1 onion, chopped
5 or 6 cloves
2 cups water
16 oz bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce
salt and pepper
1. Place one sliced onion at the bottom of crock pot.
2. Stud pork roast with cloves and season with salt and pepper.
3. Place roast in crock pot on top of the sliced onion. Cover with the second sliced onion and add enough water to fill crock pot two thirds of the way.
4. Cover and cook on low 8-12 hours or overnight.
5. Remove roast. Remove and discard cloves, bone and fat as well as any water, onions and grease remaining in pot.
6. When meat is cool enough to handle, use a fork or your fingers to pull it apart until the entire roast is shredded.
7. Return the pulled pork to the crock pot. Mix in the chopped onion and BBQ sauce and cover. Heat on high for 1-3 hours or until the onions are soft.
Serve on large, crusty buns with a mustard based Carolina-style BBQ sauce. Garnish with dill pickle spears, thinly sliced raw onion and pickled pepperoncini (Italian banana peppers). Serve with crisp, homemade slaw. Carolinians would put the cole slaw on the pulled pork sandwiches..that's up to you.
The above is the original recipe & the person that posted it has cooked the roast on high instead of low when she was in a hurry and didn't have that long. She used a BBQ sauce that was very thick the first time and it was pretty dry, so since then she has added a little water to it and it turns out perfect.

Lauren, I wanted to use the crockpot, but it was already past 12:00 when I started cooking. I was afraid it would take too long. How long did you cook the pork for in your crockpot? Yes, the pulled pork is just like the shredded pork.
