YUMMY!!!!!!!!!! I made these burgers tonight for dinner. I followed the recipe exactly, except that I couldn't find Texas Toast at my grocery store so I used some fairly large wheat buns. Everyone loved the burgers. My DH and I ate them with mushrooms and onions but the kids ate them without. Everyone commented that they would eat them again! A definite repeater. (Very easy to make too!)

I thought these were tasty burgers, too! I made them for a friend who doesn't really like "weird" things, and they went over well. I agree, they were very quick and easy!

I made them for dinner tonight. I thought they were okay, but that the worchestershire sauce was overwhelming and I would use less next time. My youngest son didn't like them at all because of the worchestershire sauce (and this was without the onions, mushrooms and cheese as well).

I probably wouldn't repeat them.

Dh and I liked these a lot. 2 thumbs up. Due to some mis-communication I wasn't able to make the rolls I'd planned to use for this so ended up with onion hamburger bun which was fine but not as toasty as I expect the Texas bread would have been. We subbed gruyere. We'll definitely make these again when looking for a little more involved burgers.

A++++ aparently, and I quote " Those are the best burgers you ever made for me." Followed recipe almost to a T. Used Walla Walla sweet onions and added a dash of liquid smoke. cause I did them on the stove. Oh and I didn't bother with teh knife and fork thing. they work fine in a bun:D

I made these last night for supper and they were darn tasty! I subbed an english muffin for the Texas toast and used pepper jack cheese instead of swiss.

I served them with the Zesty Black Bean and Corn Salad from July's issue.

Leftovers for lunch today! Yum!

We had these for dinner last night and thought they were pretty good, but nothing unusual. We generally put Worcestershire sauce in the beef for hamburgers, so these weren't really much different from our normal burger. Loved the onions and mushrooms, but here again, nothing unusual for us on a burger (open faced or not).

Over 3 1/2 years later... I finally got around to making these burgers for dinner last night. They were fantastic! Sauteed onions, mushrooms, melted swiss cheese - what's not to love?! And we are also worchestershire sauce fans so this was a quick dinner made in heaven for us! Why did I wait so long??

These sound great, totally missed these 3 years ago! To me that looks like bun, not Texas Toast, but still looks good!

2 cups vertically sliced onion
2 teaspoons sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
1 (8-ounce) package presliced mushrooms
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 pound ground round
4 (1-ounce) slices Texas toast
1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese

Prepare grill.

Heat a medium nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat. Add onion; cover and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; cook, uncovered, 5 minutes or until tender, stirring frequently. Remove onion from pan, and keep warm.

Combine 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and beef. Divide mixture into 4 equal portions, shaping each into a 1/2-inch-thick patty.

Preheat broiler.

Place patties on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 5 minutes on each side or until done. Place bread on grill rack; grill 1 minute on each side or until toasted.

Arrange bread on a baking sheet. Top each bread slice with 1 patty, 1/4 cup onion, 1/4 cup mushrooms, and 2 tablespoons cheese; broil 2 minutes or until cheese melts.
