I'm having a party on Friday and for some reason I have a taste for these. They were a popular appetizer about 8-10 years ago. I've never made them so have no idea what the ingredients are. The sauce was kind of a sticky slightly sweet glaze.
Does anyone have this recipe? Or even know what I'm talking about?:o

Peggy;
In the latest "what's for dinner" supplement, I think there was a recipe for slow cooker meatballs and they were of the sweet and sour variety. Is this sort of what you are looking for? I'm thinking sweet and sour meatballs with chunks of pineapple and pepper?

JeAnne it doesn't sound like the one I remember, but it would work. Is that supplement still on the newstand?

I'm not sure, but it may be in an old cooking light annual. I think the recipe was called Aunt Jenny's Slow cooker meatballs or something like that.
There are a few sweet and sour meatball recipes on the web..not tried and true, but I'll post what I find.

Hawaiian Meatballs
Square Meals - Jane and Michael Stern
A word of warning: Don't let the cherries alarm you! They give the dish a nice eerie look, but you don't have to actually eat them if their creepy waxy texture upsets you. I have to thank Jane and Michael Stern's Square Meals for this Polynesian delight. I had to adjust it a smidge to eliminate most of those pesky vegetables. For the last word on Meals Men Like, this wacky couple's All-American cookbook Square Meals is a treasure.
1 pound of lean ground beef
seasoning salt (I use Lawry's, of course)
2 cups of grated carrots
1 20-oz can of pineapple chunks
1/2 cup of red vinegar
1/2 cup of sugar
3 Tbs. of soy or stir-fry sauce
salt & pepper
1 tsp. of ground ginger
2 Tbs. of cornstarch mixed with 2 Tbs. of water
1 8-oz. jar of maraschino cherries with juice.
Lots of steamed white rice
Season the burger with seasoning salt & form it into meatballs. Add an egg to hold it together, if you like. Brown the meatballs in a hot pan, being careful not to let them stick. Drain the pineapple, keeping the juice for the sauce. Add the pineapple and carrots & simmer gently for a while.
Remove the meatballs from the pan. Add the pineapple juice, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, salt & pepper, ginger. When it starts to simmer, stir in the cornstarch paste. Reduce heat, cover & let simmer for about 15 minutes. Add the maraschino cherries & juice, simmer for 5 more minutes, and serve over rice!
For party fare, spear with party picks and arrange on wooden platter, or keep warm in a crock pot.

I did see that listed in the recipe finder, but didn't open it. I'll go back and do that now. Thanks.

JeAnne thanks for the other recipes also. I'm sure I can make one of these work. This one that I've copied here looks great since the party is right after work on Friday I can form the meatballs the night before and then just put them in the crockpot the next morning and they'll be ready when we get home. I'll look to see if there are any reviews elsewhere.

OK, now don't laugh at this recipe. My mom made these for my niece's grad party Sat night.
Take 1 large jar of Welch's Grape Jelly. Add 2 jars of the "chile sauce" that comes in a little round jar and a white lid. If you can't find this one, any mild chile sauce or salsa will work. Mix together into a crockpot, add meatballs and heat thoroughly.
Enjoy! :p

Peg-
The reason why the Aunt Jenny one looked good to me is it's similar to those cranberry/chili recipes...sweet with a little heat/tang. Most sweet and sour to me is just way too sweet and not enough sour. DH loves sweet and sour and he liked the alton brown I posted last week and he also likes the recipe from WW TOT. You could adapt those as well :D
The first two are more sweet and sour type recipes and you are just using meatballs instead of frying pork or chicken.
There was also a CL recipe a while back (sorry I'm terrible with dates) for Hawaiian chicken as an appetizer. The chicken marinated and then was skewered with pineapple...this looked good as well which I'm sure you could adapt more to your liking.

Although it's been a few years, I made Aunt Jenny's Meatballs and remember them being tasty. I served them over egg noodles, which I would not recommend b/c there was not enough sauce to flavor the noodles and overall the dish seemed bland. I do, however, remember the meatballs being quite good on their own (very tender fom the crockpot, of course!) and feel that they would make a great appetizer-type meatball to serve at a party.

A version of this is a traditional Christmas Eve dish in my family for years - unsure of why. The only difference is 'our' recipe calls for a pkg of onion soup mix instead of the onions. I like these and so do most of my family. I wouldn't want them often, but they are pretty good and easy enough. Some of us have been known to make them ahead, freeze and reheat in the crock pot.

Susan I don't think that sounds weird at all maybe that's the scary part!:D
Kristi thanks for you input, I'm going to give these a whirl and I'll report back.
Thanks again everyone for the ideas. I appreciate your help.:)

I've got one word for these:
Blech!
I made these last night. It's the first new recipe I've tried in almost two months (since Alex was born), and I was so excited. We were invited to a wedding in Hawaii this weekend, and couldn't go, so I thought I'd try these.
I don't know if it was my fault, since I didn't use the oil and cook the meatballs in a skillet. I baked them instead, like some other recipes. But they completely fell apart. I think I only had about 1 1/4 pounds of ground beef, but still. They were incredibly gloppy. I even added some breadcrumbs into the mixture to try to get them to stay together.
The meatballs themselves tasted pretty good, but when I added them to the sauce, they completely fell apart. Talk about disgusting looking! This dish looked like one of those gross jello dishes from the 70s; it was hideous! The sauce was ok, but very, very sweet. I didn't notice any "sour" part to the sweet-and-sour sauce. I like sweet things, but this was really strong. DH and I usually love meatballs, but I didn't even bother to save the left-overs. The whole thing went straight in the trash.
Peggy, I hope you have better luck with one of the other recipes. I think I am going to stick to my longtime favorite - the CL Meatballs in Sauce from June 97 (the ketchup/grape jelly sauce).

ugh. sorry about your disaster, susan. but thanks for pointing out the Meatballs in Sauce recipe from '97. I have put it on my list to try. What do you serve that with, or do you make them as appetizers?
a wedding in Hawaii? Gosh, I can't imagine why you weren't able to attend. ;)

So let me get this straight, you did not like these?;) LOL, I'll be sure to stay clear of this recipe then. I did the Aunt Jenny's and they are in the crockpot as we speak. I'll report back on them no later than monday.

I think I've always made them as appetizers/party food. But I served last night's ones over rice. I'm guessing you could do that with those too.
You know, we actually were seriously considering going to the wedding in Hawaii, even with Alex, because we've got the freqent flyer miles. But the real problem is that school hasn't let out yet, and DH is a teacher. If the wedding would have been two weeks later, I think we would have done it. Sigh. I love Hawaii. I think we're going to all go for Christmas.
I'm sure this isn't the one you want. It's also rather a vague recipe and I have no idea how the results taste. On the other hand, it IS from a Hawaiian cookbook... :D
BBQ Meatballs
1 pound hamburger meat
1/2 cup catsup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon shoyu
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons prepared mustard (hot dog)
Prepare hamburger as for patties, but shape into meatballs. Then cook meatballs, turn over, pour sauce and simmer till done.
(From: Ohana Style Cookbook)
PS Shoyu is soy sauce...

PS Shoyu is soy sauce...
Thank you, that was my first question. :D Ok maybe that was my only question. Gail these sound pretty good. I like the addition of worcestershire so I think next time I'm looking for a meatball recipe I'll try this.
Oh and in a few minutes I'll add a link to my review of the Aunt Jenny's Meatballs.

Our cooking club is planning a Polynesian dinner. Can anyone recommend a good meatball receipe? I probably will also make the pineapple rice that Sneezles posted.
Thanks
