Found some delicious-looking corn-on-the-cob at the market today and I'd like to try microwaving it. But I've never prepared corn that way. Anyone ever tried it and been happy with the results? Please let me know! THANKS! :)

I have tried it, although it's better with a more conventional method, IMHO. I rinsed it off, then wrapped it in a wet paper towel, and microwaved it for about a minute. It doesn't take that long. If it's not quite done, microwave it in 15 second intervals until it is.

That's how I make it too except it takes a little longer in my microwave. This is the only way I cook it unless I'm making a lot for a crowd and then I drop it in boiling water for a few minutes or wrap it in foil and place on the grill.

Frankly, I don't know why you would. It's so quick on the stove, at least with the method we use.
Fill a large pot with corn and cold water. Cook on high until water comes to a good, rolling boil. Remove corn immediately.
It's still crunchy and sweet that way, rather than over-cooked and mushy. Mmm. I think I need to go to the store.

I usually just wrap it in cling film (saran wrap) and nuke it for about 90 seconds. No pots to clean after.

Ditto about wrapping it in plastic wrap and microwaving it. Very easy and comes out great!

My folks do it all the time in a microwave steamer thingy. When we are having corn we are probably grilling something so we wrap it in foil and toss it on the grill.

I always microwave it in the husk. As soon as it feels hot (through the husk) it's done enough for me. I got the idea from a Nero Wolfe mystery, though he roasted it in the oven in the husk.

For 2 or 3 ears, we ALWAYS microwave - no pans to wash or hot water to heat up the kitchen. We use waxed paper to wrap the ears in, not plastic wrap. I've used the plastic wrap too, but find the waxed paper comes off easier.

Okay. The lone skeptic is chiming back in to say you guys have me convinced. I'm going to give it a try in the microwave. . .

robyn,
let us know how you like it. I always do it in a pot on the stove, too, but I would be willing to try the microwave.

The microwave method is not my first choice for cooking corn on the cob. I definitely prefer it roasted on the grill. The microwave is just the fastest alternative. Generally, though, I boil it.
Is it a myth that you boil all of the nutrients away when you boil any vegetable? I always forget that with corn. I steam everything else, but yet I boil corn on the cob. I wonder if the microwave method is the healthier way? Anywone?

We have frieds who always microwave their corn on the cob and it is really delicious. They put the ear of corn on a square piece of wax paper, wrap it up, and twist the ends. They nuke it for about 3 minutes, if I recall.
Regarding saran wrap, I have read that microwaving saran wrap (and other plastics like food storage containers, etc.) is really bad for you. I think it's b/c the heat releases carcinogenic toxins in the plastic which are then transferred to the food. Has anyone else heard this? I don't mean to be an alarmist, so ignore me if I'm wrong!

I heard this years ago and stopped using plastic wrap in the micro - I only use paper towels (white) or waxed paper.

This is the MAIN way we cook corn on the cob. We leave it in the HUSK and then unwrap it after it's cooked. It only needs a few minutes and all the nutrients stay 'wrapped' inside!

When it's really hot out I'd do anything not to heat up the kitchen!
As others have reported, we've had great results with microwaving -- I'll admit, I was initially really sceptical!
We husk it and put it in a small glass rectangular pan with a little (1/4 cup?) water. Cover it somehow (used to -- gasp! use plastic wrap...) Usually we zap it for as many minutes as there are ears of corn. Sometimes it takes an additional minute, but not always.

I often microwave corn too. Mostly because I don't want to heat up the kitchen. I will also nuke it for a short time and finish it on the grill, if I'm grilling something else. This way I get a nice roasted finish without having to babysit the grill too long.

WOW! This has turned into a very interesting thread! :)
Well, I didn't have much time last night, and I didn't get a chance to read these wonderful responses before dinner - so I did it on top of the stove like I always have... BUT! Next time I am definitely trying the microwave!
THANKS, ALL!!! :)

My brother, who never eats anything that's not spicy, does his a really interesting way.
He husks the corn, rinses it, dries it with a paper towel, then rubs a stick of butter on it just to give it a slight sheen. Then he sprinkles on some seasonings like cajun spices or southwestern or whatever he wants. He wraps it like a Tootsie Roll in wax paper, making sure it wraps about twice around.
He made this for me once and I swooned! It was so good! :)
