I just got my new catalog today and they are featuring a new spice Aleppo Pepper.
This Turkish crushed chili has an ancho-like flavor with a little
more heat and tartness. Put a jar right on the table and shake on
pizza, subs and salads. Aleppo Pepper is great on grilled meats like
chicken breast, steak, chops and our flavorful, easy Turkish Kabobs. Aleppo Pepper also makes an attractive sprinkle for potato, chicken and tuna salad and deviled eggs too. Try mixing Aleppo Pepper with our Greek Seasoning for flavorful roast chicken, tasty pork chops, and robust salads. Aleppo Pepper is also known as halaby pepper.
Is anyone familiar with this pepper? I can't say I have heard of it, but I am not the most "pepper educated" person around. I think I will have to get some on my next visit (next week perhaps! :D)
I haven't seen or heard of that pepper either. I have abookthat lists a bunch of chilies -- I might look for it there. Sounds like something my DH might like. I'll have to give it a sniff next time I'm in the store.

Please let us know what y'all find out. I was wondering about this one, also, but have no Penzey's nearby. And didn't that recipe they added sound great?! Wonder if I could sub ground chipotle in it?

I'll let you know what it's like as soon as I get some. As for subbing, it says it's "ancho-like" so maybe it would be the better pepper instead of Chipotle, but I'm not an expert here.

Very interesting -- and thanks for the heads up. Penzey's has so much already that I likely wouldn't have noticed this.

Don't give me credit. If you have the new catalog, you can't miss it.

Right, I order from them all the time. But they haven't invented "Smell-o-Vision" yet.

I received my new Penzey's catalog a couple of days ago and even though I haven't gotten around to going through it, I did stop, wonder, and look into what the heck it is. I trust that if anyone tries it, we will hear about it.;)

I was at Penzey's on Saturday, and I just HAD to pick up this new spice (I can't help myself! :D ). Last night I tried a bit sprinkled on pita crisps, and it was great! I love the little bit of heat without it being overpowering. The label says that aleppo has a lemony flavor, but I didn't put enough on the pitas to detect that.
If anyone finds any great uses for this new spice, I would love to hear them!!!

Thanks for the report, Kismet! I've marked the Aleppo pepper for my next Penzey's order.

I found Aleppo pepper in Middle Eastern stores, where it usually goes by the name "Turkish pepper". I think it's more flavourful than ancho pepper. I searched for it because I have a cookbook that asked for it specifically (The Foods of the Greek Islands: Cooking and Culture at the Crossroads of the Mediterranean by Aglaia Kremezi). Here is the Amazon link, if anybody is interested in checking it out: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0395982111/qid=1055274463/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-7648825-9392164 .

You know that would be a brilliant marketing tool for them... to enclose a small packet of a new spice in their catalouge each time... just enough to get an idea of what the spice is like. There are so many spices we americans don't use on a regular basis. And if you live nowhere near a Penzeys store, it would be a nice way to get a feel for what the new spice is like... of course I have no clue what a makreting ploy like that would run, but I'm sure its results would be phenominal... I think I'll e-mail them.:)

I just received a shipment from Penzey's about a week ago. They had enclosed a free sample of Pasta Sprinkle with my order. It was the 1/4 cup plastic jar. Granted, it wasn't a sample of the new spice, but it was still a wonderful suprise! I hope that they keep that practice up!

I managed to get to Penzey's last week and picked up the Aleppo Pepper. I just bought the 1/4 cup jar, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet. I was surprised that it was in flakes. I guess I expected a powder. The lady in the store said that she really likes this spice and it's not has hot as the red chile flakes so most people find it a good heat.
Has anyone else tried it?

Bumping this up to see if y'all have anything new to report before I decide to order this next time. Thanks!

I know that I should have tried it by now, but I haven't gotten around to doing anything with it besides sprinkling it on pizza (yum, by the way). But onw of the ladies I work with has used it in potato salad and thought it added a lot of flavor without too much heat and without overpowering. It has been really popular, I feel like such a slack for not using on more things yet.

I'm with you, Shannon. I got my Aleppo pepper two weeks ago, but I haven't used it on anything yet. Maybe I'll give it a try on the chicken that I'm planning for tonight.

I've used mine on chicken and I've sprinked it on sandwiches (on the tomatoes), and in potato salad. I know that I didn't use enough of it, because I still can't describe the flavor. It isn't a hot pepper, that's for sure. I think I need to not be afraid and just sprinkle more of it on.

I used mine with the chipotle spice rub from the Mexican Steak recipe in 4/03's issue on a tritip I stuck in the crockpot. A nice medium heat with a touch of smokiness to it. Can't say I've used it on anything else yet, but DH wants to use it in his next batch of hot link sausages.

Luiza and I were at Penzey's a few weeks ago and I was ready to buy this when she covertly whispered to me to buy it at the Turkish store down the street. We went there and I got a 3/4 cup container for $1.59! The man who was behind the counter told us that it was very hot, but I don't think that it is. I used it in fattoosh last week and in tabooleh as well, plus in a seasoning mix for fajitas. I like a bit of spice, but nothing that sears my mouthand this has a nice, pepper-y flavor without packing in a lot of heat.

Well, I finally used this pepper, and I love it! I decided to substitute it for the cayenne in the Southwestern Lime Grilled Chicken, although tripling it for equivalent heat, and while I was mixing it into the marinade, I sampled a few grains plain out of the jar. Oh yum. Oh good. Oh lovely. Oh oh oh oh. (Can you tell I liked it? :p )
So I'll be using lots more of this lovely pepper. Highly recommended, not to mention potentially addictive. ;)
Cheers,
Phoebe

Since this was such a "hot" post last year and reopened again only recently - I am suprised that no one has referenced it yet...
"Lamb and pistachio kebabs"....anyone remember?
Anyhow - interesting that this spice is referred to as "Aleppo" pepper - from Turkey...when Aleppo is in Syria. Regardless, I agree...it's a knockout!!!
If anyone is interested in the original post I've tried my best to attach it here....

Just wanted to revive this thread to add my raves for the Aleppo pepper...I ordered some from Penzey's and tried it straight out of the jar. Yum! It's got some heat but also a lot of flavor, much more so than ancho. It's like a happy medium between cayenne (not as hot) and ancho (way more flavorful). It's a must if you eat any kind of Meican dishes, and I think it would be terrific subsititute for any hot red pepper. You can be very liberal with it and not risk burning your face off.

Another vote for Aleppo! I sprinkled it on my pizza last night.
