View Full Version : Posting idea...reviews

My suggestion would be to continue to make group postings of many recipes - but to make it easier to navigate through the recipes, I saw someone who "bold-ed" the recipe title in the post.
What do you think?

Sherry--I DEFINITELY agree. Sometimes I am just to overwhelmed by a general "Reviews" post where there are about 30 replies and I simply don't read it.

I actually really like the bulk misc reviews. I have dicovered many recipes I would not have tried (or read) had it not been for seeing it in someones overall review. I have to agree that everyone should do what works best for them.

Grace - please don't discontinue your bulkreviews!! You always inspire me!

Thanks for the input.
I like the idea of bolding the recipe title, allowing a quick scan of the posts to be easier. If the consensus is to post in bulk, that is fine, but could we bold the recipes. I think that way, everyone would enjoy the bulk posting, and those of us in a hurry could easily skim the paragraphs and read what catches our eye. I appreciate the input. It is interesting to see how everyone works best.

Norma, I do like the idea of pasting into word and doing a find. I may have to try that.

I have just done searches before for the recipes I am interested in trying, but this too takes a bit of time.

Thanks http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

As I have been following this thread, the thought occurred to me that I am so grateful that people take the time to post their reviews. I would much rather wade through any form they choose to put them in than to have them feel that it is too much bother to post things a certain way, and have nothing to wade through.

I love the reviews and tend to print them out and place with the month's issue also. Grace goes to a lot of trouble to write her fabulous remarks, etc., as well as several others and I consider this to be important information!!! Please don't stop! I can understand Sherry's frustration, but perhaps you could just scroll a little faster.

I can see both points, as I don't always have time and I am shocked at how many posts come in. e.g., a recipe I posted yesterday that I wanted someone try because I think they're great (cookies, that is) is now on the third page!
Bolding sounds good. But I feel like I'm saving recipes the hard way - plz someone correct me - I highlight the recipe, copy and then paste into Word...is this the hard way or what?

My vote is for the bulk reviews, too, but with some way to make them easy to distinguish.
Bolding the titles is a great idea (or putting it in caps).
Now, if someone would be nice enough to tell me how to "bold" ..... I've been wondering how, anyway.
An e mail showing me how to do it would be greatly appreciated by this great grannie !
Thanks

WOW!! You guys have me blushing. I'm flattered that you like my reviews. I must say, the thing I love MOST about this board is definitely the reviews. EVERYONE'S reviews!! They're all good to me. The ones that say the changes they've made, the dissenters, all of it. All of the different reviews really, really make me think, and I've definitely changed the way I cook because of everyone here. I used to be a STRICT recipe follower, and now, thanks to all of you, I have found the courage to try things a little differently sometimes (i.e, substitutions, additions, etc.). Cooking has become even MORE fun - I used to consider myself basically a baker, who cooks out of necessity. Lately, I have found much more pleasure in cooking, mostly because there is so much to try and experiment since I've found this board.

As far as this discussion is concerned, I will try to keep my bulk posts organized at least by month, and I think the bolding idea is great.

As taught to me by Lorilei, the resident html expert, here are the instructions on how to bold:

HOW TO MAKE THINGS BOLD...(copied directly from Lorilei's earlier post)
You'll need to use a bit of HTML. In HTML, a "B" surrounded by square brackets indicates "BOLD". An "I" surrounded by square brackets indicates "ITALIC". "/B" means "STOP BOLD". In turn "/I" means "STOP ITALIC".

Type the word you want to emphasize:

DOG

Surround the word with your commands in square brackets (I'll use regular ones to illustrate):

(B)DOG(/B)

Your results should look like this:

DOG

Remember, keep those reviews coming, and like Joyce said, whatever form you are comfortable using, I'll be happy with too.

Thanks again everyone. I sound like a broken record, I know, but I really love this board. Everyone here is really so wonderful and thoughtful and kind. Too bad we couldn't all live in the same neighborhood! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

My vote is for the monthly reviews too. I like seeing what everyone has tried in that month's issue.

I vote for the "bulk" reviews. Also, Here's my two-cents:

1) Bold the recipe title as suggested, and keep on a single line as a heading.

2) Follow the recipe with your star rating (1 to 5 stars). I like the idea of immediately seeing how you feel about the recipe before reading your comments. Example:

(B)Chocolate Chip Cookies****(/B)

3) Put a blank line between your reviews to separate them even more.

Also, I use the FIND command all the time without pasting in Word. I have Netscape, and just press CTRL-F for the find command. It searches within that page--works great!

Oh No---my "bold" didn't work---help!!

Also, I have one more suggestion. If someone does start a topic for a particular recipe (and it will happen), let's only post reviews for THAT recipe, and not others. If you want to post reviews for other recipes, then start another "bulk" thread. Just a thought....

Hi everyone, I hope I am not stepping on anyones toes posting this suggestion. I am a busy at home mom of two and I have found that the review posts get quite long, ex: Jan/Feb reviews. It takes me so long to hunt for the recipe I am interested in gettting a review on. I was wondering if everyone would be interested in only posting reviews by the recipe name. One recipe review per post. Many of you have already done this and it works great because if I am interested in the recipe I will read the post. If it is not one I am interested in then I can move on to another.

So, I know I am picky, but I wondered if this would make for easier reading.
We could post, for example:

Jan/Feb. Review: Puffed Up Chocolate Chip Cookies

Thanks for any input in advance http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Yes, we definitely could do that, but honestly, I probably wouldn't post as many reviews that often because it is a pain to have to make a new posting each time, particularly for those with slow connections/computers. If everyone decides that's the way they want it, I will be happy to abide, no problem, but again, you probably won't get as many reviews from me (not that everyone waits anxiously for MY reviews anyway!!). Also, there are always new people around here - I think it would be hard to make sure everyone does it this way. Just my small input, for what it's worth.

I DEFINITELY don't want to miss any of Grace's reviews!

Grace - If you find it more convenient to post reviews in "bulk", please continue to do so!

I certainly understand what Sherry means. It does get difficult to find a review when they're hidden in a lengthy post. But like Grace says, I think it would be difficult if not impossible with all the new ones joining.

I felt Sherry's frustration at first, but I have come up with a solution that works for me. I copy/paste the reviews in my word program. Then I use the 'Find' thing when I want to find a review. It's really fast, and it works very well for me.

my only opinion on this would be that so many people have said that if it weren't for the reviews on many recipes they wouldn't of tried it, and if people aren't incline to post a new topic on different recipes we may loose out on trying some that we otherwise may not have tried. just a thought http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

i tend to scroll through these threads and if one review catches my eye or is repeated i stop and read, otherwise i go on to another topic.

Ann

I definitely understand Sherry's frustration, but I also think fewer reviews would be posted if we went this route. I know I wouldn't post as many because I'm one of those folks with a slower connection and I would get too frustrated trying to create that many new posts. But also, I like to browse posts containing multiple reviews -- I'm not always looking for a review of a specific recipe. For that, I plan to try Norma's method -- it sounds like a winner.

I personally love reading reviews labeled by month. I print out the entire review and then file it inside that month's magazine. That way I have a list of ideas that people have commented on. Different strokes for different folks I guess...

kentgirl; Glad to see someone else couldn't get the HTML trick to work. I thought it was just tech-impaired me!
Hope Grace or anyone else can help us learn how to do this. It would often be handy.

I like the star idea, too.

For those of you who are still having trouble with bold - Grace was just using the ( bracket to illustrate. You need to use the square bracket which looks like this: [ ].

OK.... I'm [b]determined[b] to get this.
It isn't bold in this window, but maybe if I post it , it'll turn bold.
Here goes !

Grace
01-09-2001, 03:11 PM
Ginny, you forgot the slash (/) before the b in the one that comes after the word "determined". Use (b) to START bold, and use (/b), (again, notice that slash!) to END bold. And, of course, use the square brackets, not the parentheses....

Ladies,

Just so you know, when you're typing your reply on the left side of the screen is a little line which says *UBB Code is ON
which contains these very instructions for using italics or bold, just in case you forget...

The one catch is that you can apparently only access this line in your original message, not when trying to edit.

kentgirl - As far as I know, you can't underline, but you can italicize. You do it the same way as bolding, but instead of the "b," you use an "i."

Cheers,
Phoebe
