I have been invited to a little get together and am in charge of bringing an appetizer. Does anyone have any suggestions? One of the members of the group has to watch her salt intake. (The menu is a roast and vegetables.) Also, does anyone have any suggestions of a bread that might go well with the meal? I love my bread machine and would love to bring a nice hot loaf to accompany the meal.

Here is a delicious herb bread (rich and wonderful) that you might wish to try!

I'm quite certain that you could adapt this recipe for your bread machine (I've found that adding the ingredients in the order recommended is often sufficient).

SOUR CREAM HERB BREAD

1/2 Cup warm water -- (105-115 F)
2 Packages Dry Yeast -- (or 2 Tbsp.)
1 Cup Sour Cream -- warm
6 Tablespoons Butter
1/3 Cup Sugar
2 Teaspoons Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Marjoram Leaves
1/2 Teaspoon Oregano Leaves
1/2 Teaspoon Thyme Leaves
2 Eggs -- at room temperature
3 3/4 Cups Flour -- unsifted (to 4.75 cu

Dissolve the yeast in the water. Dump everything in a bowl, putting in three cups of the flour, and beat it for about 1 minute. Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough. Cover and let rise until doubled. Stir down and turn it into two loaf pans or casseroles or whatever. Cover, let rise again, and bake in a 375 oven for about 35 minutes.
Remove from pans and cool on racks.

I usually use the light or non-fat sour cream. It's very rich and fragrant, particularly if you use fresh herbs! 3x as much as is called for above if you do use fresh. It really makes a difference.

For appetizer ideas, you might try a search on the site (you might even check the recent holiday party threads). I know we've had a number of rousing discussions on this topic, and there are some GREAT recipes out there already!

Jeanne G,
Are you talking about searching on the Cooking Light website? What do you type in for the keyword? It won't let me search just by the type of food, so I am just thinking of random ingredients like "mushroom" and "tomato" and typing them into the keyword, which is producing very few results. Are there other ways to search on the website that are more broad, where i could just search by "appetizer"? I even tried typing that in as a keyword and it only yielded 8 recipes and I know there must be more. Help!

lorelei,

Your bread recipe looks wonderful! I have been wanting to try bread making with my Kitchen aid mixer and I think that I will use your recipe. Thanks for posting!

tiffanyh,

If you click on "search" on the page you're on right now (upper right corner), and do a search on "appetizers" in the Great Food section, you will yield 136 previous posts on this bulletin board that have the word appetizer in them. I know you will get many ideas this way.

Good luck, and welcome to the board!

Your sour cream herb bread sounds wonderful! I have some wheat flour I am trying to use up, do you think I can use that instead of the regular flour?

Kerri -
I don't know if I'd replace /all/ the flour with whole wheat, but a half/half blend would probably be quite good. I've done that before with other herb/cheese breads and had excellent results. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Perhaps this is a ridiculous question, but what bread do people typically use when they hollow out a loaf and fill it with spinach dip?

I have used a sourdough, rye, or pumpernickle.

I usually use the round Hawaiian Bread. I think it comes in an orange wrapper and is usually in the deli department of my grocery store. I'm thinking it's called Hawaiian Delight?

Hi Tiffany,

Here's another "oldie but goodie" thread on appetizers which isn't going to readily pop up by searching Great Foods.
http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Archives/Archive-000002/HTML/20000714-1-000183.html

Since you're fairly new around here, you might not be aware that there are three sets of archived recipes you can search in addition to Great Foods, in addition to all the great help you get from everybody here. Without trying to sound like one of those annoying ad people who occasionally post here, it might help you to check out the Helpful Information for New Members at the top of the topic page.

Welcome and good luck with your appetizers!
