My darling girl kitty, Cally, is sick yet again. Some of you may remember that DH and I went through the ringer with her last year when she suffered through 6 months of a "mysterious illness". She was tested, poked, operated on, and even driven to Texas A&M vet school for the full spectrum of tests. Nothing was ever found, but she eventually got well.

Thursday afternoon DH came back to our condo at noon to get something when he noticed the vase of flowers knocked down from a very high perch. One of our kitties had eaten the flowers (a very small amount), which sadly were a lily variety. We rushed both cats to the vet to see if they could vomit up the flower. They couldn't be made to vomit, but they ingested activated charcoal and were given lots of fluids to pump the toxins out. After blood work, it was obvious that sweet Cally had been the one who ate the flower.

So we took her to the Austin Emergency Vet Clinic where she was given IV fluids and her kidney levels were monitored. She has now been in the emergency almost 72 hours and her levels continue to go up. They are now at a dangerously high point. She is still urinating and resting comfortably. They performed an ultra sound of her kidneys and they were slightly enlarged. Basically the emergency clinic has told us that there is nothing left for them to do. They've suggested we see a specialist for a kidney biopsy. If her levels continue to go up, eventually her kidneys will fail and she will have to be put down.

Devistated does not begin to express how I am feeling. Last night, after visiting her at the emergency, I just lost it. I howled and sobbed myself to sleep. Words can not express the guilt I feel over having those flowers here in the first place. I don't want to give up hope that she'll get better, however I am feeling so overwhelmed right now.

Also a mother of 4 kitties, I am thinking of you. I lost my most beloved cat when I was 11, and I STILL cry over him sometimes, but he is a precious memory. Please try not to feel this is your fault -- as all parents find, we can't protect our babies from everything. You did your best, put the vase up high, and an accident happened. Don't blame yourself, k?

Thanks so much for everyone's thoughts & prayers. I just wanted to let you know that Cally's enzyme levels have stopped going up. They are still really high, but at least they aren't getting any worse. She's been at her vet's office, which she likes far more than the emergency clinic. However they do not have over-night care. So last night she messed with her IV and spent 7 hours without fluids. Tonight she'll have to go back to the emergency clinic :(

DH and I are very exhausted, especially DH. But I appreciate all your care and concern. It means the world to us that so many people are sending their best wishes.

Thanks again,
Melinda

I'm so sorry - we just lost our cat of 12 years in February and I can relate to how you must be feeling. I'm hoping the news continues to be okay and that she somehow gets through this -

More thoughts and prayers being sent your way from a "mommie" of two kitties. One of our cats got outside recently (both are indoor) and was gone 24 hours. We thought for sure she was gone due to the huge number of wild animals in this area (even the humane society wasn't very optimistic). DH and I never cried so much. But she found her way back, and here's hoping your kitty fights her way back to good health.

Please keep us updated.

I'm glad things are beginning to look better for Cally. The cat we call our Nanny cat just came in (probably also wanting food), but she seems to know when someone needs a hug and a pet, so she sends her caring thoughts too.

Thinking of you, DH and Cally.

I hadn't realized Lily's could be so toxic! Thanks for informing me - my cats nibble on anything that comes in the house and i wouldn't have thought about it.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and Cally that things continue to improve. And I hope her stay in emergency clinic isn't too long--it's so hard when pets are ill or confined because they don't understand what's going on. Best wishes!

Very best wishes from another kitty mama here. I hope your dear kitty is all right. I didn't know Lilies were so toxic either. My cat doesn't eat them, but I'm not sure I should even buy them anymore. ?
