Hi everyone. I refered to the healthy picadillo recipe (Cuban inspired?). Some of you mentioned the sweetness in it. The reason I think its because of carrots. I make picadillo for Shepards pie etc but a bit differently.
1. I chop some ham (steak ham) and saute it with olive oil (very little)
2. Then I add chopped onion , chopped green bell pepper and red bell pepper (for color)
3. REmove set aside then I cook the ground meat (be it pork, turkey, beef) Yes go ahead and drain fat.
4. I add back the saute vegetables and I add the raisins (black), manzanilla olives
5. You can then add your tomato and tomato sauce, salt & pepper.
6. Note: I use sofrito which is basically a saute of cilantro, garlic etc. Since this is not available you can improvise by adding a minced garlic (as recipe suggested) and chopped cilantro.
Sweet? Carrots will add sweetness and yellow peppers are sweet, you are also using wine which might add to the sweetness. I personally would omit carrots, wine, yellow pepper (use red) and omit the balsamic vinegar.
Hope this hints will help.

Thanks Vanessa for your tips! After reading the other thread I was considering making it this weekend. I will incorporate your suggestions when I do.
