Aggie inspired me to bid on a few on ebay, but I kept losing the auction. Then I was at Target the other night and was able to buy a 4qt. Rival ice/salt electric for $17 :D :D Snatched it up and brought it home and am now busy making ice cream and gaining weight!!! Better turn to the lighter recipes!!

How fun - the kids love it. If you haven't gotten one yet it's a great summertime purchase. Even my dad came down specifically for a bowl of vanilla!!

Yea, Debie! :D It's amazing how cheap they're getting. It's a fun summer thing, isn't it?

Debie, sounds like you're having fun with your new purchase! Isn't it funny how all over the country we're all pulling out our ice cream makers at the same time? :D Yesterday I made the Strawberry Ice Cream from CL Complete.

Debie, did you luck into it in the clearance aisle or was it a general sale item? (read: do you think I could get the same deal here in MA?)

How many gallons (or pints) does a 4qt make?? My concern would be that it would make too much... 1) I don't need that much ice-cream and 2) I don't think there's room in the freezer. Th ereason I ask is a friend og=f mine was telling me tis morning that he got one for a wedding present that makes 6 gallons (could that possibly be right?).. now that's a alot of ice-cream!

Loren, it was just on an end-cap with a "New Low Price" sticker on it. I'll bet you can get one where you are! One thing, it uses ice and salt, but it is electric.

Christine - I doubt it was 6 gallons:D Your friend must have misspoke! The biggest one makes 6 quarts, that's about a gallon and a half. Mine makes 4 quarts - it's plenty for my family of four to snack on during the week. Plus you can make less by halving the recipes.

Yes, Gilgamesh, you MUST tell us how it turns out! I haven't gotten my ice cream maker out yet, but I already decided the Baci ice cream would be the first one I try this year, it looks soooo good. But anything with Nutella has gotta be good, right? :D

I got excited about those hazelnuts, but I also ment to mention that we tried the Mint chocolate chip ice cream from this BB that was from the Ultimated Ice crean book. It was sinfully wonderful, I'v never had such a rich ice cream! Too sinful though, I would try light cream next time.

OMG. The baci ice cream really is something. It's RICH--just licking the dasher and scraping the bowl made me feel guilty (esp since no workout tonight, since we have no water pressure). The consistency of the custard is much thicker than any other ice cream recipe I've used, and frozen it's more the consistency of frozen chocolate mousse than ice cream--though that may change once it ripens in the freezer. If you're searching for low fat, though, close your eyes; here comes the recipe.

Baci Ice Cream

Baci are those chocolate-hazelnut foil-wrapped candies that I can't say are good but are somehow compulsive, and you get this ice cream in every gelateria in Italy. Eat it in cones, stuffed into broiches (!!!), or simply in a bowl, with a sprinkling of chopped, toasted hazelnuts. You can get hazelnut syrup at nearly any coffeehouse or specialty shop these days, and you do need it to get that intense, smoky, caramelly nuttiness.

4 large egg yolks
6 Tbs sugar
2.25 cups heavy cream
4 oz bittersweet chocolate, at least 70% (I sprang for the Scharffenbarger, and I'm glad I did for this recipe)
2 Tbs best quality cocoa powder (Double dutch dark)
7 oz (.75 cup + 2 Tbl) Nutella
2 tsp hazelnut syrup

Whisk the yolks and sugar in a bowl until thick and creamy; they should form pale ribbons when you lift the whisk or beaters. Bring the cream just to the boil and add it to the beaten yolks, pouring slowly and beating all the while.

Melt the chocolate (Nigella says microwave) and let cool slightly, then whisk this, followed by the cocoa, into the eggs and cream. Pour the mixture into a pan and cook on a low to moderate heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until everything's smooth and amalgamated and beginning to thicken. Turn into a bowl or wide pitcher and cool, whisking or stirring every now and again to stop a skin from forming. (I cooled it a bit, pressed some saran to the surface, and refrigerated it overnight)

When the mixture is cool, whisk in the Nutella and the hazelnut syrup and then freeze in an ice cream maker. (mine took about 5 minutes less than most other recipes do)

Rather than starting a new thread, I'm just reviving this one. I just got back from Sam's with a new Cusinart Ice Cream Maker in hand (with second bowl). I've been resisiting buying one only because I knew it would be used a couple of times and then collect dust.

Well, it was only $26.81 and only 3 left. I knew I would kick myself if I let the deal pass.

Maybe your Sam's has the same deal! :D

Believe me...It won't collect dust if you love ice cream and really want to make it! Have fun and great deal too! ;)

Actually I plan on making sorbets and sherbets with it for DH. I love ice cream, but a spoonful of a really good, decadent flavor, is enough to satisfy me. Hmm, I wonder if my kids will like homemade ice cream?

My kids love the ice cream, and they enjoy it even more because we make it ourselves - they get a big kick of out it. Imagine, ice cream that doesn't come from a store!!

What a great deal you got!!
