View Full Version : De-lurking in Ohio...
To all you great people on the BB:
I've been lurking for a while, but it's time to go public. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the BB, and many thanks for all the great recipes!
Oh, and I live in Columbus, but I'm originally from Cincinnati (home town of Skyline Chili, the late lamented Virginia Bakery, and Graeter's, the Graet-est ice cream in Ohio). I know there are some Ohioans on the board--Phoebe? Mary Kate? Shannon? Are you there?
Thanks again to everyone for making this SUCH a nice place.

so glad you decided to de-lurk & join us! hope to "see" you around more on the bb.
just curious, since you have been lurking for awhile... how long did you lurk for? what was the best recipe/advice/topic you have read on the bb so far? why did you decide to de-lurk? :)

Awesome to see another ohioan on the board! I have to ask, are you a buckeye fan? :)
Welcome to the boards, I know I lurked for almost 6 months before I started posting, I was tired of missing out on all the fun.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome, and I look forward to being a more participatory member of the board.
You had a few questions:
Shannon wants to know if I'm a Buckeye fan. Well, since I am from Cincinnati, and moved here last November (lived in Minneapolis for a number of years), I am not a homegrown Buckeye fan. However, I do think you should support the home team, and I live here now, so I guess you could call me a transplant fan. I also have a cousin who attends OSU, so I can root on his behalf, right?
sunberst wants to know how long I lurked, why I de-lurked, etc. I think I found the BB in January of this year, and just sort of felt shy of putting myself forward. I am a new CL fan and don't have a lot of cooking experience (I'm learning!) and so I wasn't sure I had much to contribute. I guess I de-lurked because I was starting to feel like I knew some of you and it seemed silly to hide any longer. Plus, I am still new to Columbus and I know there are other Ohioans here, and it seemed like a good way to meet people, at least virtually. Oh, and you also asked about favorite threads/recipes/advice. Hmmmmm.....I have gotten several good recipes off the board, but they're on the other computer, so I am not sure I can credit them properly. There was a spicy black bean and tomato recipe we made a couple of nights ago that was very good, and a quick whole wheat pizza dough recipe that is FABULOUS and much better than waiting an hour and a half for the dang stuff to rise. I have about fifteen more I am eager to try! As a new yeast bread baker, I have appreciated all the bread threads and advice a great deal. Oh, yes, and I bought a Microplane grater because of this board, and I don't know how I ever lived without it! The book threads are also fun because reading is my number one favorite thing to do.
I love how easy it is to share experience and advice. I have lurked and/or participated in a couple of other BBs, and this one is SO much nicer. Everyone is very pleasant and helpful and friendly, and there is a distinct and pleasant lack of the rudeness, disturbing threads, and lousy grammar/spelling I have encountered on other boards. Thank you all so much!
Oh, and Mary Kate, am I right in thinking you're an OSU student? Hope your car clock is still running OK!

Kyra, it's running great! :) And yes, not only am I an OSU Alum, but I'm currently a student again. :) Go Bucks. I notice your PM's and your email are both turned off. If you'd be interested in joining our little supper club, it would be lots of fun. :) Get a hold of me somehow and I'll give you more details, nebulous though they may be.
MK:
Any details, no matter how nebulous, are always welcome. And there's always Penzey's to make a pilgrimage to, if people don't feel like cooking.
E-mail is kyrasv@yahoo.com.
wishing you many non-zapped miles in your car,

...is it my imagination, or is that distinctly North American....or southern North American? ;) :p Just wondering if "Hey!" is a traditional greeting in Yorkshire, or..... ;) :p :)

Meant to say that, YES, this place is very genteel! :) I stopped by a thread on the Food Network board, and someone innocently mentioned that she missed Cooking Live! and had found that show to be homier and more enjoyable than Sara's Secrets. Sheesh - she was LAMBASTED, told to "get over it" "get a life" and basically told that she was a loser for simply missing a program she had enjoyed! :( I wished they had a PM so I could invite her to come here, where the worst she'd hear might be, "I never cared for Cooking Live, but have learned a lot from Sara's Secrets -- to each her own!!"

Well, we do have our occassional disturbing threads and rude posts, but those only serve to make it more interesting. But thank goodness we all pretty much have good grammar and spelling here! Its funny how important that is to a lot of us. Not that anyone cares about minor grammar errors, it is just nice that the English language doesn't usually get mutilated here.
Welcome!

Kyra-
That pilgrimage to Penzey's better be when I'm working :) !
I am also a student at OSU, like MaryKate (although I still have about a year until graduation. You don't have to know a soul to root for the Buckeyes, although it helps make it more personal.
This is an awesome way to meet wonderful people. Just a few months ago we had a get together where I got to meet many wonderful people from this board (mamasue, molli, marykate, peggy and many others) it was a blast and they were all so nice.
Have fun and don't be a stranger! (As you can see I have a hard time controlling exclamation points)

I have to interject that one of DH's best friends and his fiancee just moved to Columbus (he works for Budwiser) so when we come out to visit, you all better be ready for another get together because I have yet to meet anyone! And it's really about time, don't you think!? :D
