We are about to have a new stove delivered and installed on Monday. I am very excited to be getting it...we splurged a little. (Plus I have/will be without a stove or oven for a week+...Arghhhhh.)
Our old stove FINALLY broke down last Saturday..I have kindof been anticipating this day...LOL! It was an old Rust Orange HUGE Tappan range that is from the 50's. I loved it though because it had a bunch of storage and a 5th burner with a griddle.
It just got me wondering how many of you have splurged on stoves or were lucky enough to have a great stove in your home when you bought it?

We just moved into our newly built house last October. We installed a Viking 30" gas oven/stove and I love it!! I love cooking with gas, much more controllable. We also put in a warming oven.

My house came with a 6 burner viking range and an electric double wall oven:D I had never cooked on a nice gas range, and I LOVE it! It works really well with my Allclad and LeCreuset. My burner ignitors are going out, but the house is under home warranty, so I'm going to have them replaced before the warranty expires. $100 vs. $800. DH loves his new kitchen and he especially loves that the grates lift off the range surface for easy cleaning...I just wish they weren't so heavy.
How do you like that warming oven?

Wow, I am so jealous of all of you with Vikings! But I'm also excited because my new stove arrives today! It is the Maytag Gemini Gas Range. The delivery guy is supposed to bring it and install it around nine or ten this morning. I can't wait to see it. The stores only had the electric model, so I haven't even seen the gas one in person!

Lucky those with the Vikings!! I have an electric cooktop and 2 built in ovens. They came with the 1960's house. I absolutely hate the cooktop - no control over the temperature which is really a problem when I can using the pressure cooker. It does have the buttons on the hood so I never had a problem with the kids fooling around with the stove, but the temps are low, med low, med and high - no inbetween. When I looked into getting the cooktop replaced some years ago I couldn't believe how expensive they were, so I still have the cooktop :(

We moved in September, and the appliances in our house were TERRIBLE!!
They were old, in bad shape and FILTHY. I didn't even want to attempt to clean the oven/stove, so we went and ordered new before we moved in. We got a 30" Dacor Duel Fuel. Gas range, electric/convection oven. I love it. We had it delived the day we moved in, but unfortunately the person who told me they could hook it up for us (we had the gas line installed for it prior to delivery) couldn't figure it out. So we had to wait a few days to find someone to install it. We also ordred a new refrigerator, the Wide by Side by Maytag. I love it too, we spent a little extra and got the humidity controlled crisper drawers, well worth the extra couple hundred dollars. They keep stuff so fresh, much longer than in our old fridge. Also, the fridge here was so dirty that it took me a whole evening to clean it. We put some leftover pizza in it before it was totally cleaned out and my daughter and I ended up with foodpoisoning. Gross.
We kept the fridge (after cleaning it out) and put it in the garage.
Enjoy your new stove, it makes cooking such a pleasure.

I hve a GE profile :(
I've posted before on what I don't like about it....
burners too close together so I can't use two 12" pans side by side. THe right front burner also emits some fumes that I've hd looked at and they claim is fine
It's interesting to hear positive things about the Viking. I had considered it but didn't get it for several reasons...
I heard they break down a lot (like the ignition thing will continually be a pain). I also knew that the BTU's are sooooo strong that you need to reconfigure an existing house for venting (probably costing me more than the stove  ). Also, because the heat output is so strong my A/C would run forever :o
I've been reading about different ranges on the gardenweb that someone suggested looking at and DAcor or Wolf sound nice...but I haven't looked at them.
Can't wait to see what my kitchen will look like once we decide where we relocate. :D

I despise my electric oven, but since there is no way to upgrade to gas in an existing home in Florida, I don't replace it. The burners are too close together because the button panel is on top, instead of in front, which takes up cooktop space, so my griddle pan doesn't even fit across two burners, and two large pans can't sit together. One of my burners is either high or low, but not hot enough for my wok! Grrr.... I am deeply envious of the gas owners, and wonder what you all recommend when I'm ready to replace it, since I want the control of gas, but have to stick with electric in this house. Waiting for an answer from all you experts, because if I get a good one I might just drag this oven out to the street.

Cheap, icky, electric, 15 year old thing that came with the house. I hate it. It's continuios cleaning, meaning it always has black stuff on the bottom.

We got a Kenmore Elite 40" Dual Fuel. I REALLY wanted a Viking, Wolf, or Thermadore but cannot afford it. This Kenmore seems to have everthing I need...5 burners, small second oven (with its own temp control), convection oven, gas cooktop, tons of storage...plus it was on SALE!
Here it is...

I've posted about this before, but when we were house hunting last year, we actually crossed several houses off the list because tehy wouldn't have been able to accomodate the stove I was getting as my 40th birthday present. We got a 48" Dacor dual fuel, which I ADORE. Yes, we had to have new venting run to accomodate the 48" hood (but let me tell you, once you cook fish with a professional hood, you'd be amazed, NO smell--although the fan is really loud compared to standard ones) Easy to clean, beautiful to look at, and a dream to work on. (although the high BTUs took some getting used to, I think I boiled-over every single pot of pasta or rice I made in the first 6 months--I sound like a slow learner, huh?) :D

We have the Maytag Gemini as well, but just electric. (When we were stove-shopping, there was the whole hoo-ha of gas privatisation going on in Ontario, gas prices were being forecast as all over the map, so we decided electric might be safer.)
I *heart* my Gemini, though. The two ovens are perfect -- perfect, I tell you. I use the little one, mostly, for everyday use (it heats up in mere moments, and is just right to bake little dishes for two) and for heavy-duty baking, TWO ovens is marvellous.
We have a smoothtop, which wasn't our first choice; however, it was the floor model, and was therefore very, very cheap. Given an option, I would not recommend a smoothtop. No matter how careful one is, they seem to mark.

Wow Lisa,
Your oven looks amazing. I am keeping that picture to have something to dream about.

I think Lisa's oven wins (for the non-Thermadore/Viking/Dacor people) :)...
But I'm really happy with OUR new stove. We got it when we moved, and it's been an incredible purchase so far. It's a GE Profile Performance Spectra model.
The ceramic glass top is a breeze to clean -- and the oven is HUGE compared to other 30" ranges I looked at.
I love the ranges in temperatures for the burners (including a high output burner and a precise simmer burner at 950BTU's). Haven't put the warming drawer to the true test yet, but am hoping it will come in handy for holidays and such :)
I also LOVE the convection feature... No, it's not "true" convection, but it does amazing things for chicken and baked goods!!

CompassRose - We just got an electric Maytag Gemini. I love the double ovens already, but am having trouble getting used to the cooktop. It gets REALLY hot! I'm not sure if I was just too used to my old stove (the Harvest Gold Beast) or if there's something wrong with it. How does yours do?
If anyone else wants to respond, please feel free!!

We also have an electric Maytag Gemini (that seems to be a popular oven on the BB!) and we love it. I never thought I'd use the double ovens as much as I am. It is an awesome feature. I love the smooth cooktop too.

It's actually dual ovens--a big one and a smaller one. Since it's just 2 of us, I wind up using the small one most of the time, but for parties and holidays, having two is bliss. We got some mighty funny looks from realtors, though, when we rejected houses because the stove wouldn't fit; you could really tell which realtors were foodies and which weren't.
I actually have an acquaintance who has the SIXTY INCH Viking. They totally remodelled their kitchen, and literally had the place built up around the stove.

Hi lorilei!
Your stove looks nice too...it has a nice big window in the front!!
The Kenmore that I am getting has a glass top also and I am a little worried about it...do you have a problem with chipping it? (I am not graceful at all...LOL!)

Have not had any trouble whatsoever with the glass top yet :) (THANK GOODNESS!!) I haven't been unusually careful with it either.
So -- hopefully you won't have problems either!

Hot like the burners hot, or the entire cooktop getting hot? I don't have a problem with the cooksurface getting hot, if that's what you mean.
The burners, though, heat up fast, and STAY hot for ages... and you have to be really alert to those wee red warning lights... (first few weeks of having the stove, I melted a plastic bag of lettuce onto a burner I'd turned off probably a half hour before. Horrid kitchen in grave need of remodelling. Stove is counterspace. Bad... )
Also, I've found that when I supercrisp my pizzas (at 500 degrees!) the front top of the oven door gets singy-warm, and I've nearly burnt myself on it a couple times.
If the whole cooktop gets hot when you turn on a burner, though, that sounds kind of like a problem.

I'm also in love with my kitchen, especially the cooktop. And please allow me to gush about my entire kitchen rebuild too. But first the cooktop, after much research etc. I opted for a DCS, 36" 5-ring gas drop-in cooktop with a seamless grate - that means I can slide pots around very easily.
The middle ring is extra big, designed for wok cooking with exceptionally high heat abilities. The other 4 rings have amazing simmer levels too. Can't gush enough about it.
I didn't like the size of DCS ovens - they seemed terribly small which is why I did a drop-in gas cooktop and not a range. Instead, I have a double-oven from Kitchenaid.
And to add to my glee, I got every single appliance (double-oven, refridgerator, huge sink, faucet, dishwasher) from eBay. All told, my calculations are that my internet bidding skills saved me about $4,000 off retail prices.
My DCS cooktop I got through a friend, as the venture capital company he works for bought the DCS company a few years ago and he gets a discount.
And just to finish, I praise my DH who built my entire kitchen for me to our specificiations - and I mean built the entire thing - we took the original back to sheetrock and even took most of that off too. Rewired the electrics, put in a new floor, sealed off one entrance and made a new one, filled in holes in the ceiling etc. Then we built the new cabinets (they arrived flat pack) and started installing the new stuff. It took us 2 months - during that time we ate take-out or picked up pre-cooked food from my sister-in-laws nearby. It was stressful - but it's the kitchen of our dreams, hand built, and WAY cheaper than calling in contractors.
Sorry for going on...

CompassRose - Thanks for your response. No, the whole cooktop doesn't get hot - only the burner that I'm using. I could probably boil water at setting 5 or 6, instead of 10 or 11. Is that normal
Thanks for the warning about the cooktop!

Had to de-lurk for a moment to tell you about my new kitchen, too! Two years after moving into our 80 year old home, we finally finished our kitchen (almost, still have to change the light fixture) today!!!
LRimmerman, we have the exact same appliances! We got the 30" Dacor cooktop and the electric regular/convection ovens! Isn't the stove awesome! And we also got the Wide by Side by Maytag. I love my fridge! Our old fridge was so tiny you couldn't put a frozen Tony's pizza in the freezer side!!! And now, the WBS allows DH to put the entire box of an extra=large pizza in there!
We also have the Bosch dishwasher which is also great except for the annoying beep every few minutes when it's done cleaning (signaling to open the door). We start it at night or early morning on the timer and just when you're falling asleep you hear the beep in the kitchen. Oh well I can live with it.
We also got new floors, and the countertop guy just put in our new granite countertops and sinks today! Yay!! We still have to hook the sink up, but we've been without kitchen sinks since Tuesday morning. Normally, not too bad, but with a 4 month old it's a pain. Making her bottles, and washing them in the bathroom sink...ugh.

That's the link to mine, which is the KitchenAid Proline Dual Fuel. I love it and found it to be somewhat less expensive than other professional models. I got a second oven too, which is the Bosch electric convection.
My DH is also renovating our kitchen (tin ceiling, cork floor, soapstone countertops, apron front farmer's sink, yellow pine island top, new wiring, lighting, music speakers, absolutely beautiful cabinets that he built....he's a cabinetmaker and wanted to give himself the best. He's much of the way through after working on it for 2-1/2 months, but there's still enough to do that it's making him crazy). If I ever learn to use our digital camera and post pictures, I will. Good for you! I wish we could have afforded the KitchenAid...it is so nice! I was so glad when I saw the Kenmore stove for less than $2000.00...and it is being delivered tomorrow...YIPEE! (We have been using the grill ALL week!)

The Great Indoors and Home Expo Center has fabulous sales on floor models and returns. I almost bought a Viking dishwasher, but I couldn't talk them down any lower than $700...and although my dishwasher is old and ugly, it still works. My 6 burner range has the seamless style top. I like the grates that are lines instead of spider shaped, but that's an add on option. The cast iron grates need scrubbing often, and they stay HOT for a long time. DH thought that spraying them with oven cleaner would help...they turned ash gray. He started to panic, but I sprayed them with cooking spray and they look like new...and are easier to clean. I love the big burners. We have an electric vent that comes out of the countertop. Its nice, but I wouldn't have paid the money for it.
