View Full Version : What's wrong with my dryer???

DH and I moved about 2 months ago into a house (yay!). Of course, it's very old and so are many of the appliances, particularly the oven (not good!), stovetop, and washer and dryer. We may have to replace the oven soon (it's a double oven and the top won't heat past 300 degrees and the bottom is always off by at least 75 degrees:( ) We were hoping to not have to replace anything else right away. However, I've noticed something strange about the dryer...clothes come out of it without that clean smell. It's not that they smell bad, they really just don't have any kind of smell. I miss that fresh scent though. I always throw a dryer sheet in and they smell clean when I move them from the washer to the dryer. What's going on in the dryer? Is there anything you know of that could be taking away the clean scent? I clean the lint area often so that's not it. I'm confused... Any thoughts? Thanks!
Have you checked the vent to the outside? Especially if the house is older, it could have a build up of lint that is keeping the air from blowing out like it should -- can create a fire hazard. Not sure if that could be impacting how the clothes smell coming out of it, but if it is not heating enough or getting too hot, maybe it changes how the dryer sheets work.

That's a good idea, Beth, and I'll certainly check out that vent. However, the dryer is getting hot...clothes come out nice and toasty, just not smelling clean. It's so strange!

Have you changed the laundry detergent you are using? I notice my clothes smell differently if I use different detergents.
We put a new vent on ours -- might have been when we moved, and the dryer and ventgot out of position -- it was a funky periscope thing that didn't fit or stay in position that well. We had a problem with them drying then, and I don't think they were smelling as fresh as usual either, but I really don't remember that well. I know I smelled a "hotter" smell in the utility room, but am not 100% on the clothes themselves. If the outside vent is okay, check the inside vent connection too (and make sure the inside of the vent is clear). That's really all I can't think of right now.

couldnt hurt to check your dryer hose (http://www.diynet.com/DIY/article/0,2058,1435,00.html) .
does yours vent to outside or does it have an indoor filter (the kind with water) not sure if that could make a change in how your clothes smell, but it is just a thought.

I'm pretty sure it has an indoor filter (there's a sink down there but that's for the washer)...It's pretty bad that I don't know for sure whether we have an indoor or outdoor filter. :o I'm going to check on that right away and I'll definitely check the dryer hose. Thanks again for all the advice!

Oops, it's actually an outdoor filter. DH checked it out when he got home and he said it's clean. I can't imagine what's making the clothes lose that clean smell....I wish I could figure it out.
