In January, I will be co-hosting a wedding shower for a friend of mine. The theme is holidays and each guest will be assigned a specific holiday.

My friend who I am hosting the shower with lives in a beautiful home in Social Circle, Georgia (yes, that really is the name). We are going to keep with the holiday theme and make it a picnic in January type thing. Here is the menu we are toying with: fried chicken (so much for healthful food!), potato salad, macaroni salad, bean salad, brownies, cl's mocha trifle, and several other cookies and cakes.

I am also thinking of doing on of the sand art cookies in a jar to give away as favors. We are going to decorate the home with summery type things (you know, beach balls, shovels, the whole shebang!). Any other creative ideas?

That sounds like a lot of fun. This isn't a food related suggestion, but how about asking the guests to dress up in beach gear and play some good beach music, like the Beach Boys, etc?

You could make "dirt" dessert, which often is served in plastic sandpails, with gummi worms on top. That certainly would fit into the summer theme.

Could you post the Mocha Trifle? It sounds yummy! I did a recipe search and didn't find it. I only have issues going back to Oct 1999! Thanks

Susann - I don't have any super ideas for you, but wanted to say that the holiday shower is a great idea. A friend of mine threw me a holida themed bridal shower last year and it was great! Some folks were really creative and I pull out a lot of the gifts and use them during the various holidays. Have fun http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

The shower is tomorrow so I thought I would post our final menu. Let me know if you would like any recipes!

apps-tex mex dip (cl), deviled pecans, cheese platter

main dish-fried chicken

sides-potato salad, marinated balsamic bean salad, pasta salad, coleslaw (the great recipe from the bb. Sorry-I do not recall who originally posted it.)

desserts-cherries in the snow (cl recipe), cranberry pineapple bars, brownies, coca cola cake, coconut macaroons

beverages-beer, red and white wine, and of course, plenty of sweet tea. I will be drinking my beer of choice-hard apple cider.

Susann,
You're going to have such a blast! I was in a wedding last year and we had a holiday-themed shower as well, and we really had a good time with it. Everyone thought it was very clever, and eating picnic food with snow on the ground outide was fun!!

What is a "holiday shower"? Is it the summer-in-winter thing or does it mean the gifts are holiday-oriented? Either way, sounds like fun! Lilia
