There was a large post on this a month ago or so. I think if you do a search on magazine or subscription, you will find it! Good luck http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Personally, I like Taste of Home and Cook's Illustrated

I receive Bon Appetit Magazine as well as Sunset. I love Bon Appetit, and have been receiving it for 3 years now. While the recipes are not low fat (they do have a low fat section though) I enjoy it for the other features such as RSVP (favorite restaraunt recipes), the cooking class section, Too Busy to Cook, and the Cook's Exchange.
I get Sunset and Taste of Home. I also just got a subscription to Cooks Illustrated. I got my first issue, and it was pretty interesting. It doesn't have a lot of recipes, but has in-depth articles about testing different ways to cook dishes, and I loved the Readers Tips section, too!
I also get Chile Pepper Magazine. It's great, if you like hot and spicy foods, plus it has a lot of great food articles in it.
I've been mulling over getting a subscription to Bon Appetit. I think I will do it. I could sit and read food magzines and cookbooks all day!!
Hi. My husband and I get a bunch of magazines...sometimes I feel like a library. Cooking wise, besides CL, I get Cook's Illustrated, Taste of Home, Fine Cooking, Bon Apetit and Hometown Cooking. I'm glad to report I use them all too. I didn't always get so many magazines, but when I moved to the US, getting a subscription was just too cheap to resist. Now I'm back in Canada, so when my subscriptions run out I'll probably drop down to a more reasonable amount of mags.

I have subscribed to Bon Appetit and Gourmet for several years. While I have enjoyed them both, I am not going to subscribe to Gourmet any longer. It seems to be getting a bit redundant, the recipies seem "wierd" even for me sometimes, and they focus way too much on New York City forgetting that there is slightly more to the country and world. Bon Appetit is more relaxed and enjoyable, so I am going to stick with it.
I am going to replace Gourmet with Cook's Illustrated. I have purchased it at the bookstore a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Gina

I get Cook's Illustrated, Cucina Italiana, Cuisine, Bon Appetit, Fine Cooking, Quick & Light, Vegetarian Times, Veggie Life, and Vegetarian Journal.
I like Cook's Illustrated for the food and equipment reviews and the analyses of methods, but I've never been crazy about their recipes, which tend to be too buttery, creamy, and otherwise heavy for my taste. I usually wind up culling most of my recipes from CL, Cucina Italiana, and the three vegetarian magazines, with Q&L as a runner up. The rest I like for the general ideas, the foodie news, and (snicker) the pictures.
Cheers,

I really enjoy Taste of Home's Quick Cooking magazine. They have recipes divided up into categories such as five ingredients or less, slow cooker, bread machine, casseroles etc. I really get a lot of good ideas for pot lucks and most recipes can be made a little healthier by using some lower fat products.
I, of course, think CL is the best but also get cooks illustrated, cuisine and fine cooking. I just dropped Taste of Home, I found that I wasn't making many of the recipes since they weren't so light and also they tended to start using too many packaged ingredients that I didn't have and didn't care to purchase. It seemed that they were marketing people in a hurry and not ones that liked to cook from scratch. I also just dropped Bon Appetit. I also found that I wasn't making many of these recipes either. I enjoy the other magazines I subscribe to for the techniques. I can easily reduce the fat content and get adequate results with all the tips from CL.

Besides CL, the only other magazine I buy on a regular basis is Gourmet. I love their articles about wine, restaurants (..ok, so I live in NYC!), and their recipes have been getting better. They used to be way too complicated with about 100 ingredients, each one harder to find than the next. Now they are more streamlined and easier to make. Cook's Illustrated is great too, but while I appreciate all the work they put in testing their recipes, I don't really want to know. I just want to know the final result. And I got the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever from them! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

In addition to CL, I was a faithful reader of Pillsbury's Fast & Healthy magazine. It had health tips, and fast, easy recipes which included photos of each recipe and nutritional info. Pillsbury has discontinued publication. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif I'm not sure why. Possibly due to the Pillsbury/General Mills merger???? Guess I'll have to rely on CL now.

Alky - I get the exact same magazines as you do. (CL of course, Cook's Illustrated, Cuisine and Fine Cooking). I have no desire to subscribe to any others, as I have a hard enough time trying to fix all the stuff from the ones I have! I have been solicited for that Taste of Home magazine, but as you pointed out, it looked like the cooking of my relatives in Central Illinois - everything with canned soups, jello, cool whip, weird casseroles, basically unhealthy and a lot of processed stuff.
I also subscribe to Prevention, and they occasionally have a good recipe or two that I like. I also get Oprah's magazine, and hers has food I like looking at, but will never make (too fattening and unhealthy). But it looks wonderful (and probably tastes wonderful).

I get an absurd amount of magazines, but the only real cooking-oriented one I like is CL. I also get lots of recipes, though, from southern living, coastal living, self, shape, and, believe it or not, Instyle. They have some great recipes for entertaining.

I am in awe of all of you that subscribe to so many cooking magazines! (Especially Phoebe!!) My goodness... I have a hard time getting through Cooking Light every month!
As a treat to myself, I did just subscribe to Food and Wine magazine. I received it years ago and enjoyed it. However, I just got my first issue and I wasn't very impressed. Hopefully it was just this one issue...

Phoebe,
Could I please spend an evening (or weekend, or week, or month, or...) at your place just browsing?! Better than any library's selection...

Hmm...this is an interesting topic. I have subscribed to CL for a couple of years. I just started subscribing to Gourmet because I wanted to support Ruth Reichl, the new editor (ATTN "foodies": Her bio TENDER AT THE BONE is terrific). I have also subscribed to Cook's Illustrated for some time and use it as a learning tool.
CL is my primary source of recipes. However, I also subscribe to Health magazine which has very good recipes in each issue.
On occasion, I buy Bon Appetit and Saveur just to keep up on the food trends.
I used to subscribe to Eating Well, a now defunct healthy food magazine. I have kept all those issues and refer to them frequently. In fact, I make an Chocolate-Banana Lunchbox Cake from that magazine on a frequent basis for DH.

Thanks for all the feedback! Before I posted this I did a search for magazine, and ended up with hundreds(it seemed)of matches. I looked for a few, but didn't find any on this subject. If anyone remembers the thread please let me know.
Thanks,
Karen

Thank you! I will certainly have to bring over some choice vegetarian dishes. Thing is, I will want to hear all about your years overseas and living in different regions of the U.S., etc., etc....it sounds fascinating. I may never get around to reading the magazines! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Vegetarian Times has great recipes and easy weekday menus including a shopping list. I gave up Cooking Light for 2 years and subscribed to VT instead. Giving up CL wasn't smart tho'. I find the articles more useful than the ones in VT. I can't subscribe to lots of magazines because I can't bring myself to throw them away. Not a problem so far, but we'll see. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

Besides CL, I used to subscribe to Weight Watchers magazine. They sent me a notice saying they were bought out or were stopping publication or something, and they'd transfer the rest of my subscription to CL! THEN, I got a mailing to subscribe to the NEW WW magazine! Go figure!
I also subscribed to Cooks Illustrated for awhile. I really liked the ratings on cooking utensils/pans/ingredients; I hate to waste money on an inferior brand! I never really had time to make their recipes (I'm way behind most of you on this BB in keeping up with CL), so I let it lapse. I was hoping the local library carried it, so I could keep up, but no such luck.
