View Full Version : Question about sheets and mattress pads

I'm really tired of my cheap sheets. They don't stay tucked around the corners very well (would a mattress pad help?), and I'm just ready for better quality sheets. I'm looking for suggestions.
I've purchased flannel sheets, which I love, from L L Bean. I was thinking about checking out their regular sheets, unless someone recommends something better.
And, I've never had a mattress pad. Should I get one? I don't want to spend a TON of money, but I want a cozy, comfortable bed. By the way, our bed is a full-size (antique) and we do have the "thick" mattress & box springs that require the deep-pocket corners on the sheets.
Any advice/suggestions will be appreciated!

Get the mattress pads! Such a difference (and it goes easy on the mattress, too!) I've slept on wool mattress pads - under sheets, of course - and the support is wonderful. I have a pillow-top mattress now, and love it; they have pads that duplicate that feel.
As to sheets: why don't you splurge on 300 + count cotton sheets? So silky-feeling: wonderful! (Hint: I bought mine on eBay...)

A mattress pad will increase your level of sleeping comfort, as well as creating a barrier between your sheets and your mattress, just for cleanliness purposes. LL Bean makes great flannel sheets, if that's what you prefer. I purchase sheets from Bed Bath and Beyond, 450 thread count (totally luxurious!). Makes going to bed a real treat!

I've always had good luck with Wamsutta. Both the regular and deep pocket sheets work on our bed. They're not super cheap, but not that expensive, either.
If you have a satin-top mattress, you may want to get a mattress pad. We have a terry-top mattress, but our old one was a satin top and it was awful if we didn't use a pad. You can get something (we have a stain protector pad on the one we have now) for under $30.

You can get little elastic things that go on your fitted sheet to keep it on the mattress. I also won't buy anything less than 200 thread count sheets.

My take on what a mattress pad is designed for is to give you a little extra padding for comfort's sake plus protect your mattress from moisture of any sort (sweat, beverages etc). I can't give you any good suggestions on where to buy good quality sheets unfortunately. I think they're so outrageously expensive I usually end up purchasing mine at discount stores like Marshall's. If you're having problems with the sheets staying put they do sell little garter-like thingies called sheet straps that you can clip to the corners of the sheet to hold it in place on the mattress. They come in a set of 4 and I think I once bought them at a place like Bed, Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things. They work pretty well too.

First of all, as for a mattress pad, I never thought I'd need/want one. Well, DH thought we'd try one (with different "zones" for your head, shoulders, hips, etc)... WOW!! It's SOOOO comfy and cozy. It makes the bed even more fun to snuggle up in.
As for sheets, we were referred to http://www.smartbargains.com We just ordered a queen set of 350 ct. sheets for something like $65 (flat, fitted & pillowcases). Granted, some colors and styles are limited, but at these prices, it's worth a look. I couldn't believe how expensive sheets are. Last time we were in Linens 'n Things, just a flat sheet was something like $50-60!! The sheets we got are nice, though we're thinking about getting some 500+ ct sheets, too (to be extra-indulgent)! A lot of the sets feature full-elastic, which makes it easy to stay on a fat mattress, or deep-pockets.

If you have TJ Maxx or Marshall's close by, they have some nice sheets with high thread count, for great prices on occasion. They also have mattress pads for less than department stores. We use them on all our beds - kids and guest room too. It does make a difference.

I have bought sheets and other home products at overstock.com. They have a great selection, great prices, and shipping for your whole order is only $2.95. They even have 1000 thread count sheets.
In fact, I just received my new coffee table from them. It used to be sold at Pottery Barn for twice as much money. I had wanted that model for years and was surprised to see it at that site.

For the last few years I have bought my sheets at Land's End. The bottom sheet has elastic all the way around and fit deep mattresses. The top sheet is MUCH longer than a regular sheet to help it stay tucked under.
As for mattress pads I'm looking at one at Penneys that is like a memory foam thing. Our bed is like a brick (gee and we wanted a firm one? ) so I want a little give. I've also always used a pad, helps keep the buttons out of your back! ;)

I'm with JHolcomb in recommending Wamsutta sheets. Years ago, I found a set of sheets by Wamsutta that I just LOVED. (perfect pictures/design, all cotton) I splurged, and they lasted well over 15 years.
When I got my new bed, I didn't remember the product quality, and tried to make do with cheaper stuff. (poly/cotton, lesser brands ... ) A few years down the road, I finally splurged and bought a lovely set of Wamsutta sheets. They're just about all I use, though in winter I do use the flannel sheets I got from The Company Store.

We love, love, love our flannels from the Company Store!!! They don't get those little nibs that other flannels get and they are so soft and cuddly!!! :p
Now I've been looking at the site that Andrea has posted and my oh my, I am very tempted to buy...just wish I could find some of those babies in navy!!!!!
In response to the thread, I say "Get a mattress pad!!!" Sorry but I can't imagine sleeeping on a mattress without one...germs and things!
I also love Wamsutta because they come in navy and are very soft.
I have sheets from a number of makers that I really like, and I have a super fat mattress. Most of the higher end sheets will have deeper pockets -- and most will tell on the package what depth of mattress they will cover.
I have always used a mattress pad, but when we have had to wash my son's mattress pad and put new sheets on before the pad is back on the bed, it does seem that the sheets slide a bit. Ones with elastic all the way around the fitted sheets may stay on better than those that just have the corners. I have also found the knitted sheets to hug the mattress well (plus they are soft, no chill in the winter and cool in the summer and a good value -- they have replaced flannel for us).
Marshalls, Ross, Tuesday Morning and other outlets may have some great sheets -- even imports or designer names -- at great values (I think I bought from Overstocks.com, but not sheets). You can also get good buys on sets in department store sales -- usually the sheets sold as sets, and about 200-300 tc. Same for BB&B and L&T (plus they have 10-20% coupons on a regular basis).
Don't buy anything less that 200 thread count - they will be rough. At 240-270, the sheets get noticably silkier. When they go over 300 tc, they tend to get more dense or thicker feeling. They may or may not feel silkier (depending on the fiber, the weave -- a jacuard will not feel quite as silky as a sateen, etc.), but they will probably wear longer. Just be forewarned that once you go up to 240-270, you won't be happy with most lesser sheets. A lot of designer sheets are only 200-220 tc, so if having sheets to match you comforter is important to you, keep that in mind. I also am a firm believer in 100% cotton sheets (never slept on linen or silk or blends with those, so I'm open to those -- just no polys).

Mattress pad--definitely. I got ours at Costco. It was reasonably priced, and very thick and comfortable.
I also vote for high thread-count sheets. I did read somewhere, though, that it's equally important to be sure the sheets are made of Egyptian cotton. Sheets made of other cottons may not be as soft and silky, even at a higher thread count. Mine are 350 count Egyptian Cotton, and they've RUINED me for sleeping on hotel beds. I always feel like those sheets are burlap sacks!

I got some sheets there last year at a great price, and they claimed to be around 400 count. I haven't been happy with them. :( I prefer my soft cotton ones I got at Target 3 years ago. They have held up much better, and now the 'new' ones are barely getting used. They just weren't very soft, and the color faded. Plus, I got an extra pillowcase, same brand, same color, yet they didn't even appear to be similar. I know different dye lots can have that affect, but this was pretty drastic, IMO. I wish I could remember the brand name. It was something I had never heard of.
Next time, I'll get my Target ones (though I haven't been able to find the exact same thing. THey were $89.99 for the king flat/fitted/2 king pillowcases.

I agree that the silky feel of quality sheets is unbeatable. But if you can't find a complete set for a price you like, at least buy a set of pillowcases...the feeling against you face is wonderful.

Thanks for all the great responses. I've made note of the websites mentioned and the suggestions. I wish I lived nearer to department stores, but we're in the boonies (which I love, though). I'll be surfing the Net and probably make my purchase there. I wish I could "feel" the difference in material and the thread count, but I trust you guys:p
I was at Linens and Things last night (DS1 wanted black knitted sheets and bday is next week) -- they had some 260 tc sateen sheets sets for $39.99 for king or queen. They felt very silky in the package. Most of them were solid white, ivory, biege or blue or white on white stripe. There were a few prints. You might want to se if they have them on line, and you should be able to get a 20% off one item. Thay also have some mattress pads on special, but I'm not sure if it was all sizes or just the back to school sizes. Good luck. Have fun.

Question on the knitted sheets...I'm thinking the jersey material ones I've seen. Are they warm like flannel when you get into them or cooler to the touch like regular sheets? I hate flannel sheets, but like the idea of the jersey unless they are more like flannel.

We also have a mattress that requires deep-pocket sheets, and I've been very pleased with all of the sheets I've purchased from Lands' End (both regular and flannel). If you like flannel, their 4.5 oz flannel sheet set (http://www.landsend.com/cd/fp/prod/0,,1_2_678_19708_30801_25646_5:view=-1,00.html?sid=8520016938543150060&mode=GRAPHIC&refer=/cd/frontdoor/&fromsearch=1) is a particuarly good deal. We've ordered several sets for ourselves and also as gifts (their monogramming is really nice for gifts). :)

Boy, I didn't know how difficult it would be to find full-size sheets. I found some at SmartBargains.com. Has anyone ordered from this site? The sheets I'm thinking about are:
Heritage 320 Thread Count Luxury Sateen Sheets for $49.99 (shipping is only $6.95, which I didn't think sounded bad).

How do the high count 300 and up, come out of the dryer? Do you have to iron them???
I just bought these sheets at Target a couple months ago & really love them! I had looked at more expensive ones (Lands' End, etc.) but after reading the reviews on these, decided to give them a try. They are really silky-feeling, and have elastic all the way around the bottom sheet, which I love! Also, I know they are $45 online, but I went to the store & only paid about $30.

Peggy - the jersey sheets are more year-round friendly than flannel. They are so comfortable (think sleeping in a t-shirt:) ) that we use them May - October. After that, it's time to break out the flannel:)
Luckyfeather - I have purchased our last two sets of sheets from QVC (Northern Nights) on recommendation from my sis, and they are affordable and wonderful quality (300 TC) They also fit comfortably over our mattress and feather bed.
Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the clarification Minky. I might just give them a try!
The knit sheets don't have the chill most wovens seem to have in the winter, but they do not sleep as warm as flannels, and they don't pill the way some flannels are bad about. They have the weight of an average sheet and the knit breathes, they just don't seem as cold when I stick my feet down into the bed in winter. They really are like a big t-shirt.

I'm kind of a freak and love that cold feeling. But somewhere inbetween flannel and woven might work. At any rate it will wait until we get a king size bed. No need wasting money on the smaller sheets right now.

Peggy, I like the cool feeling of cotton cheets in summer, but I hate the chill in the winter. It's the cold toes that keep me awake! :D

That isn't a problem, the dog is usually laying on my feet. Thanfully only in the wintertime.

I occassionally get lucky with a cat at my feet in the winter, but I can't count on it. :D

For those who like jersey sheets - does anyone else have a problem with them staying in place? I think they're really comfortable, but the bottom sheet always comes off the mattress and the top sheet gets all stretched out.
BTW I never even realized that not everyone uses a mattress pad! I thought DBF was the only one - and just because he was too lazy to go out and get one. I just see it as comfort (for me) AND protection (for the mattress).

I ordered my sheets AND a mattress pad, and they were delivered last Thursday. I LOVE them both!! My bed was already a comfortable one, but now it's comfy-cozy. Thanks again for all of your suggestions!
BTW, I was very pleased with the SmartBargains website. I'm sure it's very similar to Overstocks.com. The order came quickly, and there is a lot of neat stuff on the website at what seems to be reasonable prices.
