For those of you who remember my menagerie of pets, you might remember Chuck/Charlie/Low Rider/Fat boy...my basset/border collie mix! Cute little guy who just loves to be running the pastures or howling at the moon. Well, he's been having some trouble with his food the past few weeks and we've been giving him a very mild diet (some of you may recall that I lost my dog, Roxie, to severe digestive problems 2 years ago and she was only 18 months old...Charlie is just over 2).
Well, it seems the little guy has severe allergies and the drainage has caused him to develop an ulcer (course you'd never know it to watch him run around chasin' squirrels and guineas!)
So I'm hoping that the medicine will cure this because I don't think I could stand to lose another puppy!

Eureka! You have given me something to ask the dr about for my son. That may seem really strange, but he has allergies, but they seem to make him get congested and have drainage more than sneezing, watery eyes and such -- so we may not notice if he doesn't complain. He has been complaining of some stomach pains that antacids are not helping with that well and we are not noticing any dietary patterns or signs of food allergies. DH and I were beginning to wonder about an ulcer, and this post is taking those thoughts a step further.

I'm glad you have found out what is wrong with your pup, and I certainly hope the medicine gets him back to tip-top really quick. Thanks too for sharing. I knew drainage could give a person a queasy stomach but would not have thought it could contribute to an ulcer.

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that! How's the prognosis?
I hadn't heard of lil ol' Chuck - basset/border mix? :p Sounds absolutely *charming*! :) Did you ever post a picture of him?
I'll have a word with St. Francis......

So glad you figured out what it was....I'm so sorry your little one is having issues.
Nothing worse than a pet in pain :(

My mom's dog has irritable bowel syndrome. He plays and is pretty active for a 15 year old dog, but he has to have special food and sometimes won't eat much. He also has lots of gooey clear stuff that he coughs up. I hope your vet can give Charlie something so he continues to enjoy chasing squirrels.

Canice,
I don't think I have posted his picture before but here he is rounding the fence chasing who knows what...

Thanks all for the kind words. the vet has him on amoxicilan and sulftrate (?) twice a day.

Gosh, Beth, I'd hate to think of your little one having an ulcer but this type is responsive to antibiotics.

LOL!! I couldn't imagine it, but what else should I have expected when you said "basset/border" mix! He's adorable!! :D :D
Good thoughts going out to Chuck!
I guess I have a "thing" for stubby-legged dogs! When I was meeting DBF's family last month, there was this goofy little fuzzy, white, stubby-legged dog named "Lucky". I said, "Looks like what you'd get if you mixed a Bichon with a Cocker Spaniel!" --guess what? :p :p

Sneezles hope Chuck is feeling better soon. Thanks for the info on allergies, the O man suffers from them also and though he doesn't seem to be experiencing any digestive problems it gives me something to pay attention to.

Oh and he is really cute! Err I mean handsome.:D

my parents' dog was diagnosed with pancreatitis and a thydroid disorder. Oliver was vomiting to excess. Fortunately he is fine now and home. My parents love and feed that lab to excess but they really love him. :( Hope Chuck is feeling better soon!! He has too many things to do instead of being sick!!
