I don't know how true some of these are but a friend just sent it to me and I found it interesting. Thought I'd share.

Water Vs Coke.
Water or Coke? We all know that water is important but I've never
seen it written down like this before.
WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is
often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as
3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for
almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington
study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day
could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of
sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory,
trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer
screen or on a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon
cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%,
and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
.......... and now for the properties of COKE
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two
gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after
a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone
in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl
and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The
citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with
a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in
Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of
Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to
the rusted bolt for several minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking
pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before
the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix
with the Coke or a sumptuous brown gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of
greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The
Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road
haze from your windshield.

And Now, For Your Info .............Yikes!!!!=
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8.
It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also
leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising
increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck
must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly
corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines
of their trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is............ would you like a glass of water or a
coke?

Thanks Wendy! I have never liked Coke, and your list shows why I shouldn't even start trying. I remember removing the rust of a nail in elementary science. It was disgusting.

This is hilarious!! The question is.....is the same true for Diet Coke?? I'm afraid the list might even be worse!

While I know that many of the benefits of water are true, I think many of the "coke lure" is false. A while back, I was on snopes.com and it addressed many of those "urban legends". Of course, lately I keep reading about how you don't need to drink 8 oz of water a day. All I know is that there is definitely a difference in me from before I started drinking so much water. I think my skin is healthier, my metabolism functions better and I generally feel better.

A while back (maybe more than a year ago) I had posted a link on the Boards about an article in the LA Times that discussed the fact that people really do not need as much water as recommended (not that it is unhealthy) and that caffinated beverages do provide enough "water" for people.

Not to suggest that the healthy facts about water are not true, just that Coke may not be as bad as these claim.

I do know that Coke will dissolve nails. We did that experiment in science class back in elementary school. Took less than a week.

Which makes me really leery of the recipe for baking ham soaked in Coke with foil. :p Mm-mm good!

Thanks for posting this. We were just discussing the other day in one of my teaching courses the pros and cons of allowing have kids to have water in the classroomm (frequent bathroom trips being the biggest con  ) I'll make copies for the class next week. :D

My DH uses Coke to tenderize meat (but not cook in it:eek: ).

Coke is probably worse than you thought! I'll never forget the day we looked at a full spine x-ray in class that had the worst osteoporosis imaginable. The patient the x-ray belonged to was a high school girl who drank liters of Coke everyday and had her whole life. Wonder what her teeth looked like!Soda pop has phosphoric acid which leeches calcium out of bones. I can't think of one good thing about soda, actually, but Americans drink more of it than they do water. And we wonder why our health is so bad! Gee, who knows?

I don't know how many of the claims about coke are true, but I can tell you for a fact that the pH of Coke is indeed very low, indicating that it is highly acidic. We checked this one day in my lab when we were bored. Acid very effectively breaks down many different materials, so it would not be surprising if it could remove a corrosive layer on a metal or break down meat.

I wonder if people drink Coke for the caffeine boost it gives you? I usually drink water or tea, but a couple years ago I started drinking two cans of Dr. Pepper a week in order to stay awake for all night experiments. It made me feel alert and awake, but not in a strange, jittery way that coffee does. However, this only went on for a couple of months because I found myself looking forward to the Dr. Pepper, to the point where my heart would start pounding as I walked down the hall to the vending machine, and the sound of the can opening and bringing the can to my lips would make me feel like an addict getting a fix. So I stopped drinking it! I could see how people might get addicted to soda. But water is so much better!

It cannot be good for your teeth, with all the acid and sugar. I suppose the same could be said for lemonade, although this at least has lots of vitamin C. As far as I know, there is really nothing of nutritional value in Coke, it's just highly processed acidic sugar water.

we all know water is better for you than coke, but i think some of the coke myths are a little far fetched. especially the "distributors of coca cola have been using it to clean their truck engines for 20 years..." i dont know about that one.

as for the first statement- 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, i heard recently in the news that most people consume plenty if not too much water,

i found this (http://www.snopes.com/toxins/water.htm) that also debunks that myth.

Mmmm, the taste! :D

I was highly addicted to Coke (note the capital "C" ;)) when I was in college - could easily polish off a six pack a day by myself. I quit cold turkey and for the most part, have never looked back. I still have a Coke from time to time, but it's pretty rare. For the most part, I drink water (and plenty of it), but every now and then, something I'm eating or my mood just screams for a Coke. Nothing goes as well with pizza as Coke does!

I was a big time soda drinker up until about 5 years ago - I grew up with a dad that would drink Coke with breakfast (and lunch, and dinner...), and I adopted many of his bad habits. I stopped drinking it all together, and haven't had even a sip since. I don't miss it at all, and in fact am somewhat repulsed by the stuff now.

Water is definitely the way to go!
