Here's a very interesting and eye-opening article about fluoride, questioning its benefits, even in toothpaste:

I live in Grand Rapids, the original test city. I have long been a detractor of the excessive flouridation that was being pushed on me and my children through the water, school sponsored flouride treatments, and flouride treatments at the dentist. I have never seen any side effects of flouride in my or my children's health, but since they've been small we've moved out to a suburb where we have well water, and I have fought constantly with our dentist to eliminate flouride treatments from their regularly scheduled appointments. At the last appointment I was told that if I continued to refuse treatment for the kids that they would have to consider asking me to find another dentist.

My kids have been without flouride for over 6 years now (except for what little is in their toothpaste when I can't find flouride-free). They have also been cavity and decay free as well, and I certainly feel better about standing in the way of yet one more chemical being inserted into their bodies.

I read about fluoride being potentially harmful to internal organs many, many years ago (as in like 20 maybe??), and have never forgotten that. I have long since wondered why I have never really heard anything more about it. I'm one of those that believes that we are far too lax in our attitudes towards all these potentially harmful chemicals we put into our bodies.

Debie - I applaud you for your tenacity in standing your ground against the huge current of people trying to push you where you don't want to go. Good for you.

Ditto what Grace said. Brava to you, Debie!! And FWIW, I think your dentist is a jerk. :) That's so good to hear that your kids are cavity-free. I'm shopping for new toothpaste and mouthwash (without fluoride or other bad chemicals) as we speak.

In a word, money. The industry makes too much dough to have the truth come out.

Well said. We are far too trusting of what "authorities" and companies have told us for years. You have to be skeptical and questioning of just about everything nowadays, and you really can't take much of anything as truth without investigating it, sad to say. :(

When I was getting my teaching degree the teacher I student taught with had a son whose teeth were completely rotted by overfluoridation. The poor kid wasn't even 4 and he'd had a TON of dental work. His dentist told the mom that in some kids fluoride reacts badly and it completely rots their teeth out. Not a very common thing, I don't think, but still! I use fluoride free toothpaste from Tom's of Maine and we use a Brita filter for all water, but I doubt that takes fluoride out of the water. Nothin' like drugging your own water supply!
