bands that have had their time long ago? You see, lately I have just been in LOVE with a particular song by Blind Melon (St. Andrew's Fall) and Shannon (the lead singer) has been dead how long? I was just wondering if I am the only one who does this sort of crazy thing? And it is not just Blind Melon... Pearl Jam, too!
Please tell me I am not crazy! Or if I am, it is because I have strange taste in music.

Gosh no, it's not just you! At least 75% of my music comes from 10 years or more ago. I was just listening to Pearl Jam's Ten in my car. :)

We recently had some friends over, and I loaded up the CD changer with Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Cranberries, Hootie and the Blowfish, Counting Crows, and Dave Matthews. DH looked at me and said, "What is this, junior year???" :o :o

So no, it's not just you. Music was better then. :p

I thought this thread was going to be about Tony Blair's speech before Congress this afternoon. He is a brilliant speaker.

I go through phases of music, and it depends on how far back I want to go. If I go all the way back, I listen to James Taylor, Carole King, Led Zeppelin and such. If I want to go back medium, I listen to The Clash, The Plimsouls, Modern English...really anything that's on the soundtrack of Valley Girl!

I'm all about my B-52s, vintage REM (remember "Stand" and "Night Swimming"?), Cake, Crowded House, Simply Red, Thompson Twins, and so on. We had The Smiths on during dinner last weekend, as well as Eva Cassidy.

REM is supposed to release a greatest hits CD soon....Stand, End of the World (one of my FAVS!!)

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an
aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to
yourself churn - world serves its own needs, don't misserve your own
needs. Feed it up a knock, speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder
structure clatter with fear of height, down height. Wire in a fire,
represent the seven games in a government for hire and a combat site.
Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your
neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered crop. Look at that
low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common group, but
it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,
listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in
the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light,
feeling pretty psyched.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

ANYTHING my Billy Joel is always a given in my CD player. I still have trouble realizing Piano Man was written when I was
2 years old!!!!

LOL -That's what I thought, too!

I've heard that the music you listened to sort of 16-22 is the music that stays with you the rest of your life. Isn't it great when a random song comes on that absolutely brings you back to a certain time/place/person?

(Gee, gltrgrl, shocking to see Grateful Dead at the top of your list! ;) )

I have never been up to date on the music front. My basic knowledge of pop music trickles off after 1980... and there are a few 90's band that I liked. Pearl Jam and well...Pearl jam... I am sure there are otehrs:o The sad thing is that I listen to the same music as my parents!:o

Canice

kayaksoup, I was never really "with it" either -even when I tried desperately to be so.
I listen to a lot of music of my parents' generation, too...and my mom was born in 1924 :o :p

I've been on a Van Morrison kick recently. Something about his songs in the summer...
Fleetwood Mac too (and they're touring again now).

And BTW, Rebecca, Counting Crows are always in my rotation - can't wait for their concert in less than a month!

One of my funniest memories from my freshman year of college was my friend April... she was there on a voice scholarship, opera... we were sitting in the green room of the theater because we were in a play together, and she had on her walkman, and didn't realize she was singing along to "Two Princes..." in her opera voice! And she wasn't kidding! About six people were in the room snickering at her before she realized what we were laughing at... :p

Rebecca and Kim-

Glad that the mention of the Spin Doctors are bringing back good memories.

I was suprised no one mentioned them. I saw them several times. I just loved the lead singer...forgot his name...anyway my sister was like, you're nuts. I always said there was something about him...I mean I know he ain't no Johnny Rzeznik...then she saw him on stage and agreed. Ah, but that was a million years ago!

Glad I could entertain you all a bit this fine morning! :D

I am very excited about my most recent used-CD store find... The Very Best of Crowded House!!!

I love love love "Something So Strong," "World Where you Live," "Don't Dream It's Over" (although I must say that I am digging Sixpence None the Richer's cover of that song!)... and my most favoritest - "Better Be Home Soon."

:D

I think it was the summer of 95 when Toad seemed to play on The Mall in DC almost every weekend. We used to joke that Toad was the Mall House Band. DH has seen them so many times he lost count.

Ah Eva. It's ok, I forgive you.

I just happen to really like Sixpence. I did think that "There She Goes" was an annoying remake of an already annoying song, but in general I really like their stuff. Although I don't understand why they keep releasing covers. Their original stuff is WAY better.

I listen to "The Very Best of Crowded House" ALL THE TIME! My hubby bought it for me a while back b/c I loved the songs so much. If I went back to my college days, I'd have to admit to The Cure & Depeche Mode. Try not to hold it against me:rolleyes: ! The late-80s were a frightening time.

OMG!!! I have an unbeleivable crush on this man!!!! Tony really gets my engines going... When he says "vigor" with his British accent I simply swoon.

Yes, my DH is aware of this infatuation! ;)

I always listen to older stuff - this morning it was Blind Melon - I love St Andrew's Fall, but my favorite is Mouthful of Cavities (I know, nice title), Primus (Sailing the Seas of Cheese) and old Beasties. In my car, I listen to Primus, Tom Waits and REM Green.
I was wondering this morning if anyone else was like me - I listen to new stuff occasionally, but pretty much cemented my CD collection years ago and rarely find anything to add that I like as much as the old stuff. Thanks, I feel better now.

Remember those 2 bit hacks, The Beatles? Yeah. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I listen to them quite often ;).

I think the trendiest thing in my CD player right now (or most up-to-date)would be Ben Folds[B]. The rest of the time I listen to really old bands like [B]They Might Be Giants, Rush and a band who was popular in the eighties called Level 42.

Oh, and Minky -- I LOVED my Frank Sinatraduets CD, but seem to have lost it somewhere :(. Thanks for reminding me. I need to get a new one.

Claire- I also love the Beatles...and they might be giants :D I went to see them in concert a few months ago and they were fantastic!

My music listening range is quite extensive as is DH's. We are both 80's pop ho's  I have tons of US 80's and he has tons of British 80's so we listen to that stuff a lot. I also love music theatre, opera, some industrial, 70's rock and 80's big hair rock, some punk and a lot of current alternative top 40.

Right now, I'm on a total "Evanescence" kick...I have listened to that cd nonstop since I've gotten it. DH and I treated ourselves to some new cds recently. We got:

Evanescence
Avril L.
Michelle Branch
Sum 41
Nirvana (yup, finally!)

We couldn't resist the 12.99 prices at Best Buy :D :D

I love Toad the Wet Sprocket, and all of this talk makes me want to go find the CD and take it to the car. I have also been thinking about Huey Lewis and the News lately - I think it is time for their greatset hits CD to go back in the car. :o And Bon Jovi Cross Roads (greatest hits). Right now I have The Eminem Show, The Best of Sade, Counting Crows Hard Candy, Dixie Chicks Home, Avril Lavinge, Van Morrison Moon Dance, and Jewel This Way. Sort of a mix of mostly new and some old, but I think I'll change out my CD player today. :D
