View Full Version : How do you caliberate your oven?
Does anyone know how to caliberate their oven. I have a nagging feeling that my oven is not caliberated right. I have heard that you can do yourself, however, do not know how.

Matt, you can buy an oven thermometer at any cooking supply store. Set the oven to whatever temp., with the thermometer in it. Then, check the thermometer when your oven reaches the temp., or dings, as mine does. Does anyone know how to disable that ding? I hate it and rushed to the kitchen to see what I did wrong. Am getting used to it but I still hate it!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif
Matt,
Do you still have your owner's manual for the oven? Some models actually have a very simple mechanism on the reverse side of the control knob. With something like that, it's basically a matter of loosening a screw on the reverse of the knob, resetting an indicator however many notches the thermometer indicates you're off (I think the model I'm thinking of was one notch per 25 degrees) and that's it.
...now as for any other ways of recalibrating, 'fraid I'll have to plead dumb. Sorry.

The easiest way is like Susan says, get a cheap oven thermometer, put it in the oven, and set it for 350º. After 15 minutes, look in the oven at the thermometer and see what it reads. If it reads 375º, then always set your oven for 25º less. If it reads 325º, always set your oven for 25º more, etc. That's what I do with my two ovens. One runs 25º too hot, and the other is 25º to cool, so I just adjust accordingly and it works perfectly. I heard that the gas company will come out and look at your oven and calibrate it (I think for a fee), and they also check the gas lines, pilot lights etc., to make sure it's all safe. You could call them and find out. But the fast solution is to just adjust the temp manually.
