I've been reading this board for a long time, and finally became brave enough to post.

I love ice cream and frozen yogurt, yet I don't always choose good brands at the grocery store. Does anyone have any suggestions or personal favorites? Thanks in advance!

My favorite frozen yogurt is Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie. Although I can tell it's not ice cream (no frozen yogurt is ever creamy enough for me), it has wonderful, fudgy brownie pieces in it that help you feel indulgent. I also light Edy's Grand Light ice creams.

ICE CREAM!! MY FAVORITE FOOD GROUP!
Saralee--you can't go wrong with either Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia Frozen Yogurt or the Fudge Brownie F.Y., as LGBurns describes. Cherry Garcia is cherry ice cream w/big ole dark soft cherries, and big flakes of REAL dark chocolate that actually melt in your mouth (well, if you can wait that long!), unlike many of the chips in frozen dairy treats.

Just tried 2 flavors of Healthy Choice low fat ice cream last nite (they were 2 for l at the grocerama)--Butter Pecan & Peanut Butter cup (with fudge swirl). Way too sweet, picked the pecans out of one and the crunchy p.b. cups out of the other.

Best of all is Hagen Daz's Chocolate Sorbet--very extreme chocolate rush, very creamy! Wish I could find it more often!

Happy dipping!

Thanks for all of your responses!

I'm so excited to be posting messages finally. I'm kind of shy about these chat areas, but have been a faithful reader since last summer.

I'm going to have to make a late night trip to the grocery store to try some of these. Sometimes when buying low-fat items it is hard to tell what is good and what isn't so good.

Thanks again!

I actually don't but frozen yogurt unless i'm going to make smoothies or frozen alcoholic drinks,(ie: mudslides yum!)

my family and myself prefer ice cream, i do buy light versions from a local grocery (safeway) and their brand is just fine.

now if you want to know what ice cream i really would like to eat 24/7 (kidding) it would be hagen daz chocolate chocolate chip, starbucks java chip, and ben and jerry's coffee coffee buzz buzz buzz, and ben and jerry's phish food, this is to die for, chocolate ice cream w/chocolate truffle chunks, carmel and marshmallow, oh i think i'm getting light headed thinking about this one, it's been a while since i had any http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

my SIL lives not far from the ben and jerry's factory and we visit it when we go to VT in the summers, she also always has a freezer stocked with ben and jerry's cuz a friend of hers works there and they get to take home xamount of pint containers a week, so they give them away. boy if i worked there---lets just say WW here i come! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I recently discovered Edy's Grand Light and it is pretty good for low-fat ice cream. I think Edy's is called Dreyer's in some parts of the country. My fave flavors right now are the Rocky Road and the Chocolate Raspberry. Thumbs up, too, on Haagen Dazs sorbet and Ben & Jerry's low-fat S'mores and Blondie.
One way to tell good fat-free or low-fat from bad is to read the label. Look for ones that use skim milk etc. and few to no chemical ingredients (ie things you do not recognize). This usually results in a more expensive but tastier product. In fact, this trick works for real ice cream as well.

Edy's Grand Light is the best! Right now, my SO and I are enjoying cookies and cream. Ben & Jerry's has way, way too many calories for me. Might as well eat the real stuff!

I need to add my voice to all of the Edy's Grand Light praise. I think it's just wonderful! French Silk is fabulous, as is the Rocky Road. Unfortunately I am at the mercy of my grocery store where they only occassionally stock Edy's Grand Light. But, when I visit my family in Virginia, I just go crazy with all the flavors.
Also, if you have a Ben & Jerry's scoop shop nearby, I am addicted to the non-fat Black Raspberry frozen yogurt. I have never seen it sold in the store, though.

I love Ben and Jerry's Ooey Gooey Cake. Caramel flavored frozen yogurt with stripes of caramel sauce and chunks of yellow cake. The best of both worlds!

I really like the Edy's FF vanilla frozen yogurt. It really is the creamiest, and it doesn't have that artificial taste that alot of the light vanilla ice creams and froz. yogurts seem to have. I love to mix sliced strawberries & nectarines and blueberries to top my vanilla yogurt with. The Starbucks Lowfat Latte is really good too!!! I wish Starbucks made more lowfat ice creams. My other fave is Breyers Light Neopolitan.

Hey DNS can you post some of your recipes?

Waiting for me at home tonight is my first experiement in getting a good lowfat homemade ice cream. I did a little reading and came up with a basic custard recipe and am going to try subbing different milks and ratios to see what will give an acceptable flavor/texture for the amount of fat.

I too love Edy's Grand Light but the flavor options seem to be rather limited - I moved less than a year ago and previously had better options (I guess why I want to make my own now!). I like the Healthy Choice brand okay but for whatever reason the stores here have chosen to carry the "same" flavors in both the Edy's Grand Light and HC.

Add my voice to the Edy's Grand Light Club. My favorite is the mint choc. chip.

I did try some swirl version of Healthy Choice--and thought it tasted like the container it came in.....

I love ice cream too. I will have to try the Edy's Grand Light flavors. Usually we have regular Turkey Hill, no one in my house will touch the light stuff or the yogurt either!

i agree that ooey gooey cake is amazing! so is Haagen-daz dulce de leche. it is SO rich and creamy, i couldn't believe that it was frozen yogurt! it's a little hard to find, though.

to the person who tried the healthy choice and didn't like, i agree those 2 flavors are yucky. but you should tri the fudge brownie one. it's really good and only 2g of fat!

We end up making alot of our own lowfat. but delicious ice creams....still I have to agree on the Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia. When I feel like splurging I head for the Breyer's Chocolate Chip Mint!!! Yummy!

Okay...check out the book Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt for more recipes but here's one that we love. It's fat rating is a little bit higher than some of the others but worth it when you want to splurge a little! I also recommend to Tequila Lime Sorbet featured in one of this summer's issues.
These are also for use with an ice cream maker.

Snickers Candy Ice Cream

Ingredients:
1/3 cup brown Sugar
2 teaspoons Cornstarch
1 (12 oz.) can low-fat evaporated milk
2 (2.07 oz.) Snickers candy bars (chilled and cut into small pieces
1 cup Half and Half

In a medium saucepan, combine brownsugar and cornstarch. Add evaporated milk. COok and stir over medium heat until bubbly and thickened. Cook 1 minute longer. Remvoe from heat; Stir in half of candy. Add half and half;cool. Stir in remaining candy. Pour into ice-cream canister. Freeze in ice-cream maker according to manufacturer's directions. Makes about 1 quart.

1 serving contains
243 cal.
33g carb.
9g Fat
256mg Calcium

Gosh, I think this post is beginning to be a little redundant, but I, too, must add praise for Edy's -- both the Grand Light and Frozen yogurts, and especially for their Whole Fruit Sorbet, my passion of the moment.
Cookies and Cream and French Silk are my favorites of the light ice cream flavors, and the C and C frozen yogurt is wonderful, too. As for the sorbet, I've never had anything so satisfying-- it's creamy, but hasn't a bit of dairy, and has such concentrated flavor. I love the mango and lemon flavors.
Finally http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif , if you're looking for a good vanilla, Healthy Choice fat free frozen yogurt is far and away the best I've had. I think Shape magazine gave it a top rating, too..I would never know it was fat free, and so low-cal.

my husband considers himself an 'ice cream coniseur (sp)' - he can even guess what brand he is eating! so here are the ones that we like - they have passes his test for good low fat alternatives http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif.of course ben & jerry's makes the best of everything - even their low fat stuff - i love the low fat cocnut cream pie, s'mores, fudge brownie (can't remember the exact name - it is vanilla ice cream w/ chunks of brownie), pecan pie, and the cookie dough yogurt is also good.

healthy choice make the best low fat vanilla - by far in our opinions - it isn't too sweet and actually has a vanilla taste - i find that some of the lower fat stuff just tastes like sugar - not the actual flavor it is supposed to be.
