Hey everyone-thought I'd get things going this week. Not receiving the email notification really puts me behind. I just breezed over the posts for the last few days.
Jasmine-how is your father doing? Sorry to hear he was back in the hospital.
Les-you are perceptive! I was in a little funk last week. Fortunately, I snapped out of it on Friday. Now that you mention it, yeah, I don't think you do take your own advice!!!! Sounds like you're over doing it!!! You know, of course, that I'm teasing you!
Jackie-I'm sure your son is dealing with a lot of anxiety over the unknown. Once he gets settled in the new school, it will all work out fine.
As I promised myself, I did run (3.5) on Friday before cycle class. Yesterday, I ran 4 and then walked for about 15 minutes. Today was busy. DS13 went camping with friends over the weekend, had to pick him up and get him ready for a week at Boy Scout camp. We brought him up to his camp and then dropped DS10 off at friend's house on a lake. My reward is that I won't have any kids ALL WEEK!!!! My younger son may come home on Thursday, but they said he's welcome until Sat.! I feel like I won the lottery!!!
Here's my workout plan for the week:
Monday: Core training class, group training, yoga
Tuesday: Run
Wednesday: run, cycle
Thursday: not sure...maybe weights
Friday: run, cycle
Sat: busy day, probably nothing
Hopefully, I'll have time for a walk at night too.
Hope everyone had a good weekend!

for getting us started this week. Glad you snapped out of your funk.
Speaking of which, I am WAY out of my funk.
WE HAD AN OFFER ON OUR HOME TODAY!!!
The realtors kept saying "it's a hot market, it's a hot market" but I didn't believe them because we see the warts and not the attributes of our house. (After 10 years, we're fairly realistic!)
But, the right buyer just happened to be there....it's not a totally done deal -- I still have to get in contact with our reloc. assistant from my new company but there's a verbal agreement. I lead a charmed life.....:D
DS had a horrible tennis game in the opening match of a tournament on Friday night. Experienced a real melt-down, which was only exacerbated by DH telling him in all honesty to a question that it was the worst match he'd ever seen DS play. Sometimes truth is not the best policy. DS suffered a real crisis in confidence and would not admit that the move is influencing his attention/focus/mood ya da ya da ya da. But on Saturday, the two of them played a killer set of tennis and DS was on....he won his match in the tournament on Saturday afternoon and the two matches today to bring home the consolation champ trophy. ;) Took a year off my life in the process, but we won't go there.
I'm enjoying a glass of wine to celebrate our "relief" from selling this place.
Did 30 mins. on the elliptical trainer today and will hope to do water aerobics tomorrow night after my annual eye exam. I am going to MAXIMIZE my last month's club dues since the places in the Green Bay area can't hold a candle to the club we are at now. :( It will be a challenge to stay fit in the new locale, but I'm already toying with the idea of a home fitness center.... ;)
Love you guys...
Leslie Ferguson

Big news first - Congratulations Jackie!! Great to hear that you've already had an offer on your house. I dread trying to sell my house when the time comes (probably in the next 2-5 years). Just so much that I'd like to do (or have to do) between here and there.
Sorry to hear about DS and all the junk that's going on with him. Tough time considering the mixed up time he's in right now anyway (without the move). I can only guess that your house is the only place that he really remembers as home - especially if you've been there for 10 years. I think (from my own experience) that he'll come through it okay - just give him time and lots of love.
Cindi - Glad you're out of your funk. Sounds like true heaven having both DS away for a week - especailly in the summer. Hope you get all the things done for you you'd like this week.
Workout schedule:
Sun - XT w/weights (done)
Mon - 4 x 800 m repeats (~3:18 pace)
Tue - Run
Wed - Run
Thu - Run
Fri - REST
Sat - 12 miles long.
I don't have Tuesday - Thursday down handy but I know that there will be at least one easy run (about 4 miles) and one pace run (about 5 miles).
New shoes this week are a big part of my healthful living plan (bought them yesterday). Otherwise the biggest part of the battle plan is the weight management - been DOWN :( for a couple weeks but have made progress back to my starting weight. Good thoughs for positive weight control.
Hope everyone has a good week and stays healthy and sane. Stress time is here.
Peace,
Les

Jackie-congratulations! That's great you sold your house so quickly! How is house hunting going on the other end? Glad to hear your son picked himself up and had a great match on Saturday. That should have helped boost his confidence!
Les-I should know this by now, but do you lift weights just once a week? I'm trying to work more weight training into my schedule, but haven't figured it out yet. I think I'm going to drop the weekly group training and do it on my own. I felt I got more out of the routine you suggested last week than I do with the group.
I hope I take advantage of this kid-free week and get things done around the house. I have no excuses!
It looks like we're going to have a beautiful week here. Bride should enjoy the weather....she picked a great week for vacation!

Jackie, wow, so much going on for you right now. I am so glad about the offer on your house. I really have a confidence that your son is going to do really well at his school, but I am sure all of this is weighing on him. It sounds like your glass of wine was well deserved! Good luck finding the new house!
I inadvertently ran 10 miles (we were supposed to run 9, but I miscalculated on the trail) yesterday with my friend on a fairly tough trail (the first mile was up hill at about a 5% grade, and 6.2 miles of rolling hills, and then back down, and then 2 miles with a slight up and down hill grade). It took us 1:45 so I was pretty pleased given the distance and the terrain. I feel confident about the 1/2 as we are still 2 months away.
This week I am bound an determined to get 3 other runs in -- so here is the proposed schedule.
Monday: lower body weights
Tuesday: 3 miles easy
Wednesday: track workout/upper body
Thursday: rest
Friday: 5-6 miles/upper body
Saturday: rest
Sunday: 10 miles
Cindi~ enjoy your free time. My kids are headed to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with their dad for 2 weeks, and they return and immediately start school. I enjoy the peace, but miss them like crazy.
Les~ I wish I had better advice on the whole weight issue. Maybe incorporating more healthy fats (nuts, avocados etc..) into your diet, since you previously dismissed my full fat ice cream recommendation! :p

Cindi - I only lift weights once a week. That's all a I really need for muscle maintenance and appropriate strength building for endurance running. However (because of my employer - the US Navy) I do abs every day and normally do mixed sets of push-ups (normal, feet up on a chair, hands on a chair, etc.) about 2 out of every 3 days depending on my shoulder. Even with lifting just once a week I've increased my strength a great deal over the past 18 months or so - between 50-70% increase in my reps weight (i.e., started at 3 sets of 20 leg curls with 60 pounds and did 3 sets of 20 with 100-105 pounds yesterday).
Laura - Not to discount the ice cream offer :) it sounded good to me. My biggest problem is I'm not really an ice cream fan (SHOCK!). I'm doing better on healthy eating (including fats) my problem is when I travel - get thrown off meal schedules and exercise plans.
And congrats on the run - it sounds like you and I were in the same boat this weekend. A 10-miler under those conditions is great.
Updates exercise plan:
Tue - 3 miles easy
Wed - 30-40 minutes tempo run
Thu - 6 miles marathon pace
Fri - REST
Sat - 8 miles long (Step back week)
Hope everyone has a great and productive week.
Peace,
Les

Congrats on the house offer, Jackie!! Take a deep breath, it sounds like things are flying!
Everyone sounds like they're starting the week off well. I'm pretty sure that I've got tendonitis and am resting my arm/hand again this week. :( Last week I talked about resting, but I didn't really, and I suffered all weekend. :o I played tennis Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and woke up Saturday ready to go to the doc. So, I just walked the golf course while Andrew played on Saturday and I'll take it easy this week with the golf and tennis. Which means finding other activities. Eek! So here's the plan:
Sunday: rest (went fishing but didn't catch anything)
Monday: rest and ice for arm
Tuesday: elliptical 40 minutes
Wednesday: tennis lesson (I know, I know)
Thursday: elliptical 50 minutes
Friday: swim 40 minutes
Saturday: we'll see. It depends on the arm. I'd like to golf, but I may just walk.
Oh, Les, regarding the healthy living stuff and travel, all I can recommend is to plan things. I know it's easy to get distracted when you're travelling and not eat right (if at all), so I really do recommend taking nutrition bars with you everywhere. I know you don't like to eat late (although 8 is our normal dinner hour, I realize that's late for most other people) so maybe when you have to work late and go to the gym after work, perhaps you could eat some sort of nutrition meal replacement on the way to the gym, and then have a light dinner that's already planned when you get home. That keeps your energy up too. Maybe you've already thought about all this and do it already, but if travel is the problem, taking food with you so you're prepared will help keep your weight at a healthy level and keep your doc and your wife from worrying.
That's all from me for now.
Have a good week everyone.

Take care of yourself - speaking from expereince tendonitis is a real bummer (shoulder is the biggest culprit these days). A little payment (time off) now is better that a lot of payment later. Are you listening Les?

Thanks for the recommendations too. I try to keep meal replacement bars and nutritional things with me when meetings are in progress. I think that I'd be in even worse shape if I didn't take in the things that I do. The interesting issue about eating is (and there's no scientific basis for this comment just an observation from about 3 years of weight maintenance and odd eating hours) that my weight tends to fulctuate based on the times that I eat. Sounds odd but I can take in 3000+ calories at my normal meal hours and maintain weight but if I change the times that I eat and still consume the same amount of calories I have problems maintaining weight. Sounds crazy but that has been my experience in the past. And I don't really mind eating at 8 pm - it just (strangely) impacts my getting to work in the morning. I tend to stay up later after eating at 8 that I would if I ate earlier.
Have a great week all,
Les

Here come's the understatement of the week... Here to report a good run this evening - even though it was after work. Happy to report that (1) the knees check out okay - one stop at about 19 minutes into the run to retie my shoes (always have to retie new scooters during the first couple runs) - and no issues! (2) The new Scooters Asics Gel Cumulus V feel great. But I'll withold judgement until I get a couple more miles on them. One run does not make a good pair of shoes. Speed workout tomorrow - the next test.
I'm happy, happy, happy.
Happy trails to all,
Les

Les-glad to hear you like your new running shoes! I've bought so many in the past that I'm sticking with the Saucony's that I have now (on my second pair). That's great they're working out for you. Really? You don't like i.c.! Wish I could say the same!
Laura-everytime I read your mileage, I'm so impressed! That's great!
Heide-how's your arm today? I hope you're resting it.
I had a great workout yesterday and today. Yesterday, I did 20 minutes on the eliptical, 30 min. Core training and then about 1 hour of weight lifting. After dinner I went to my favorite Yoga class. Yoga seems to help me with running. I have way less pain when I incorporate a class into my workout.
Today, I rode my bike to the gym (about 3M), ran 3.5, took the Pilates class and then rode home! It was a great mix. It was such a beautiful day for a bike ride.
Have a great day!

I'm resting, I'm resting! I iced my arm yesterday afternoon. I moved the mouse to the other side of the keyboard so I'm forced to use my other hand. I went to the gym and biked for 30 minutes today. Tomorrow I'll go to my tennis lesson, though. I'll be careful, I promise. I really don't want this injury to truly sideline me, so I'm trying to be good. It's hard to, though. I like my silly sports. Oh well.
Sounds like a great workout Cindi! I miss having a gym that offers so much. The gym I went to today is basically a small workout room. It's got an elliptical, 2 life cycles, 1 recumbent cycle, and 3 treadmills. Across the hall is a weight room, but it's all free weights, no machines. Oh well, at least I have something I can use. No classes, though. :(

I have had good results with Asics over the years (for the most part) - especially since they have found a good style for neutral shoes. I'm one of those supinators that needs NO support - just a cushioned ride.
Strangely I don't care for ice cream any more. It is one of those things that may be a learned habit (haven't really eaten i.c in such a long time). Anyway, when I eat it now I'm bound up and feel sick to my stomach. Maybe if I ate it more frequently... ;)

I always appreciate the variety that you get in your workouts. Mine tend to be fairly boring in scope. But the other things that I like to do for exercise either take longer or need more equipment/support (swimming pool).
Looking forward to my speed session today. I hope that I can get it done before the t. storms this evening.
Peace,
Les

Heide-glad to hear you're taking care of your arm. It's difficult to stop doing the things you enjoy, but as you said, you don't want to be sidelined indefinitely.
There is a young guy (early 20's) that comes to Yoga every week. He said last night that he plans his long run for Mondays and then finishes his workout with the yoga class. I thought that was an interesting idea.
I went to the new supermarket in Manchester today and wouldn't you know, Edy's i.c. was on sale! I bought fish too!

Edy's on sale. A great thing (maybe) - What's your favorite flavor?
How about the fish too. What was good on sale there today. I'm always looking for new fish and new ways to cook fish.
Heide - As hard as it is I bet the rest is doing you a lot of good. I know from personal experience that my rests are normally productive - maybe more productive at times than working out. I hope you can let your body heal as it should.
Day 2 of new scooters - I think we may have a good match. Pulled off my speed workout this evening after work. 4 x 800m on about 3:18 pace. Did all of them and there were no issues with the feet, ankles, knees, or shoes.
Happy trails,

Les-sounds like you have a winner with your new running shoes! My new favorite Edy's i.c. is Finding Nemo! How bad is that??!! Swordfish was on sale. I have an old recipe from BA. Wrong BB for this, but I'll write it out anyway.
1/4C olive oil
1/4C canola oil
(I tend to use less of each)
1 1/2T lemon juice
1 1/2T Dijon mustard
3 cloves garlic crushed
bunch of basil sliced
Whisk first 5 ingredients, then add basil. Marinate fish for 3 hours and grill.
Off to cycle class!

Hello everyone!
I didn't post last week because I was lazy and hardly did any exercise.. I was a little distracted since DBF has put his condo on the market and we've made the decision to buy a house together!! Hey, we've only been dating for 8 years now. :D So, it was kind of busy---having showings, looking at places, meeting with the realtor/ mortgage broker, etc. No bids yet, but we're keeping our fingers crossed. Congratulations Jackie, on your offer! Sooo exciting!
Heide, I'm sorry to hear about your tennis elbow. I hope that it heals soon so you can get back to your game!
Laura, I don't know if I'll ever get to the point where I can say "I inadvertently ran 10 miles" (!) I'm always so impressed with your mileage!
Les, I used to not like ice cream, either, but have found myself liking it more lately. That is probably not a good thing. Also, I'd love to be able to eat 3000+ calories a day and maintain my weight! I guess I need to go for some longer runs....;) Glad to hear you're enjoying your new shoes.
Cindi, sounds like you had a wonderful workout at the gym. You've inspired me! (Also, thanks for the fish recipe---sounds delicious).
Here's what I've done so far, and what I hope to do with the rest of the week:
Monday body pump class
Tuesday off
Wednesday DBF and I walked to work---about 6 miles
Thursday body pump class
Friday 3 mile run
Saturday 12 mile bike ride
Sunday 3 mile run
Hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Cindi - The fish recipe sounds great. When you say grill do you mean gas/charcoal grill? I hope your bike ride was good.
Kristal - You know years ago I was an ic freak but not anymore. Kind of lost the taste for it. It's kind of like my chocolate cravings. Once in a while I've just gotta have some - then I'm sated for a long time.
I'm not sure that you'd like haveing to eat 3000+ calories to maintain weight - some days it's hard to force that many calories into the system. But on the up side - you can eat just about anything. On the down side (in my case) it doesn't take much to reach an unhealthy weight (about 145).
Today has been rainy and it is really pretty cool out - should have done my speed workout today. Oh well, leaving work to hit the road.
Check you all later,
Les

Cindi and Kristal- thanks for the compliments, but I do have an end goal here-- my 1/2 marathon in September. Considering I wasn't even running in February, I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for my goal. I have really started to enjoy the 5-6 mile range, and think I will probably make that my usual run. I have tried running so many times in the past and have never got past 6 miles without a struggle. It helps immensely to have a running partner who keeps me accountable (plus she is my manager so I have to talk to her every day anyway.) Actually, I am envious of the more balanced work outs that both of you have. I don't want to bonk in my 1/2 so I have been fearful of straying from my training program and doing too much other exercise.
Les, for all my words of encouragement, I am not a huge ice cream eater myself and always buy Dreyers (the west's version of Edy's) light. Still, if I had to eat that much to keep the weight up, I am sure I would have a daily intake of ice cream. BTW, your intervals are amazing. Twice two weeks ago I got mine in the 3:50 range and I was pretty darned impressed (okay I was also almost hyperventilating , but I was impressed.)
Heide, I hope the arm improves soon. I hear you on your gym. It sounds a lot like mine.
Jackie -- You continue to be in my prayers. When do you start the new job?
cinbis

Kristal-glad to see you're posting this week. That looks like a good workout plan for the week. And, congratulations! Good luck selling the condo and buying a house. That is such a compliment that I inspired you! Thank you!
Les-I was thinking about those 3000 calories. Sounds like a luxury to me! I did a calorie calculation recently and it said I could consume a ridiculously small amount of calories to maintain my current weight (I forget, but it was under 1500). I'm not counting calories any more!
Laura-Sometimes I put pressure on myself to run, but I'm happier when I do a variety of activities. The fact that you weren't running in Feb, makes it even more impressive.
Cycle class was fun. The instructor is always amusing. He had us do a different type of pushups at the end of class. Instead of military, we brought our hands in front and made a diamond with our index fingers and thumbs. It is suppose to work more of your triceps. I didn't think it was that hard. I can barely do the other tricep pushups with your arms close to your body.
Have a nice evening.

Thanks....so many prayers have already been answered, I'm starting to feel greedy! :o
Here's where things stand:
1) We have an accepted offer on our house and the home inspection is scheduled for Monday afternoon. Provided this 1927-vintage home passes muster, we close on it Sept. 12. (Actually, the relocation service closes on it and just sends us the check. :D We don't have to physically be here, which is a good thing.)
2) We just returned from a whirlwind day of house shopping in De Pere (which is just south of Green Bay, for those of you unfamiliar w/Wisconsin geography). We put in an offer for the home of a former Green Bay Packer who is now with the Vikings (boo, hiss). It appears that the home has been on the market since April, the price was lowered $10,000 within the last week or so and our realtor told us the owner's realtor told her that the owners are "really motivated." We took that to mean make an offer, so we offered a little under the asking price and we'll see what happens. Since the husband is in training camp and not exactly "reachable," we will have to wait until tomorrow night before we know if they will accept it. There's been a flurry of activity in the real estate market up there within the last week or so (people trying to get stuff done before school starts, I think), but as far as I know, there's no one else panting at the door for this house. It's four years old, has a formal living room and dining room, great room off the kitchen and dinette, beautiful master bedroom suite (with spa tub) and three other bedrooms and larger-sized bath upstairs. A finished room in the basement large enough to accommodate the pool table on DS' wish list and a fenced yard to accommodate the dog we don't have yet. Oh, and they left behind a trampoline, swing set and sandbox. (I can turn the sandbox into a planter of sorts and we can most likely give away the swing set to someone who'll dismantle it and haul it away. The trampoline stays, according to DS.)
We could close as soon as Aug. 22 on the new house and move in the next week....but I haven't even met with the movers yet, so don't know much about their schedule. Since it's an in-state move, I would think scheduling shouldn't be much of an issue.
I start the job on Aug. 25, but down here in the metro Milwaukee area at the corporate headquarters for a day of orientation and a team strategy meeting the following day. But I could leave "the boys" up there to unpack while I go to work! Sound like a plan?
I'm very excited about the new job and new house...DS is quite thrilled about the new house (although he will have a very convoluted walk to/from school because of the nature of the streets in the subdivision....there may be student bus service of sorts, though). Oh, I almost forgot. I can WALK to work! The house is four blocks off one of the main arterials and my office is just across that street!:D  :p How many people can say THAT these days???
Working out, hmmmmm, what's that? I hope to get back to the gym tomorrow....I've been AWOL since Sunday, when all I did was a 30-minute elliptical.

Laura - Thanks for the complement on the intervals. It's taken a couple years to be comfortable at that pace - if you can ever be comfrotable running multiple intervals at 6:35/mile pace. 3:50 for 800m is still a very respectable time - sub 8:00 mile. And especially since you weren't even running in Feb - doubly impressive. We're pulling for you in your half in September. I know you'll do great. I think the person who "suffers" most from my intake requrements is LW. It's hard for me to make meals that fit her nutrition needs and don't stuff her. But after all these years I've gotten pretty good at it - it just seems like I eat all the time (and I really do) during the day.
Cindi - Good for you and not counting calories - I've never had success that way. Except in keeping my weight on these days. When I dieted and tried to count calories I never made real progress. So you liked the "new" pushups? I'll have to try my hand if my shoulder will settle down sometime soon.
Jackie - My, my - things are moving at the speed of heat. I hope that everything works out with your offer on the neat house. Now that the move is a fait acompli it seems like DS is warming up to the idea. I'd also leave the guys to unpack (but I'd also tell them what NOT TO UNPACK) they will have a great time - Christmas in August. :D
Had a great third run for the week - one more and I'll have put the new shoes through the paces.
Have a peaceful Wednesday and Thursday and keep cool and dry.
Peace,
Les

Is there anybody out there - I feel like I'm dominating the board these days (again).
New shoes - Day 4
I'll say that now that I've done all the major running events in my new shoes I think I've made a good choice. Did 6 miles at race pace today at lunch and am still feeling fine - albeit tired but fine.
How about everyone else?
I'm ready to take a break tomorrow - 4 days of running in a row is plenty!
Happy trails to all,

You're not alone Les! A day off for you sounds like a good idea! I did count calories a few years ago and lost quite a bit of weight (probably too much), but I hardly ate.
I drove up to Squam Lake (where On Golden Pond was filmed) to pick up my younger son at his friend's house. Today is my older son's 13th b-day so we stopped in at camp to see him (and listen to him complain about camp). Even with all that, I didn't forgo my workout. I rode my bike to the gym again and did the lower body work out Les suggested and some biceps and triceps.
Jackie-wow! Things are moving fast for you! That new house sounds wonderful! It will be a luxury to live in a 4 year old house! We have a trampoline (with a net). I found out last year when I looked into changing insurance companies, that most companies won't insure you if you have one. I don't know if that's just a NH rule....thought I'd mention it. Glad to hear your son is excited now about the house. That makes things so much easier!
I'm planning to go to cycle class tomorrow.
Hope you're all doing well.

I am here, I just haven't posted much because I have been an incredible slug. Finally got off my tush last night and ran 6. Overall, I was happy with the run as it had a fair amount of hills and I finished in 1:01. If I could keep up a 10 mile pace for the 1/2 I would be ecstatic! I am planning on 11 minute miles right now.
Today, I am going to either run 5 or do speed work, and then 10 again on Sunday.
Jackie, the house sounds great, and being able to walk to work is so cool. Does it meet the driveway requirement as well: ;)
Cindi~ Good job in keeping your workout going. I was telling my running partner about you last night and saying how well balanced your workouts are. I can't wait to be more balanced; hopefully I will be as disciplined as you are. I have a slight fear that once my goal of the 1/2 is gone, I won't be. I am going to do the fall running series here which is a race every 2 weeks for 8 weeks though so that should keep me motivated.
Les~ Glad the new shoes are working for you. I really like my Asics except for the one blister I keep getting. Body glide keeps it in check but I think there must be some type of seam that is causing it. I need to get new shoes here before the 1/2 so we will see what the running store people think.
While it is still warm today (although not as bad as it has been) we are supposed to be in the low to mid 80's this weekend. Bring on fall! :D

I bet you can make close to 10 min/mile pace if you're running that in your training. You'd be surprised (maybe not) how much energy you gain from the whole race atmosphere.

I had a like issue with one of my pairs. Have you felt the inside of your shoes with your hand? I found a little hard spot on one of my shoes that was cutting the top of my foot. Once I found it and cut the ridge down I had no further issues.
Hope everyone has a great day - resting (deservedly) today.
Peace,
Les

Eeeeewwwww.....they accepted our offer so we will be trampoline owners when we close. There's no net with this one, and the bumper-pad-kind-of-thingee is loose around the perimeter of the trampoline. I was planning to stop at SportMart and see what I could do about that and price a net enclosure. As luck would have it, there was a Green Bay Packer scout at the Vikings training camp the day we made the offer. The scout has kids, and the former Packer/now Viking told him he could have the swingset they left behind. The owner's wife was annoyed that he had done that, but I said they were welcome to it -- the scout just has to dismantle it and haul it away on his own. We won't miss it.
Yes, Laura, the house meets the driveway requirement. ;)
I managed to get the gym last night and do an upper body strength training workout and ride the bike for 30 minutes. All pretty mindless stuff...will get to the gym this aft for an elliptical workout, too. If it doesn't rain, I'm going to lounge by the pool for a while afterward and chill out. W-A-Y too much happening in the last five weeks!

Laura-I can't believe you're a slug! You were just taking a well deserved rest! I'm sure you'll keep running even when the 1/2 is behind you. I vary my workouts so I won't get bored. I'm fortunate to have a great group of friends at the gym. I often feel that if I don't run, it doesn't count...I know that makes no sense!
Jackie-congratulations! I'm so glad they accepted your offer! I do think the net on the trampoline prevents accidents.
Les-are you taking the day off? I hope so...you deserve it!
Spinning class was good...that's all I did today. If it's not raining tomorrow, I'm going to go on a bike ride with the Cub Scouts. The ride is going to be a little under 10 miles. I'm looking forward to it.
I'm surprised that my legs aren't sore today after yesterday's lower body workout.

Hello all. I'm having an odd week, exercise-wise, because of the need to rest my silly arm. So, I did the bike, the elliptical, pilates, and had my tennis lesson Wednesday. The lesson went poorly because I was really favoring my arm and doing dumb things. Oh well. It was an experiment. I'm going to play golf tomorrow, but if it starts to bother me, I'll just walk. Otherwise, my arm seems to be feeling better, it's just really stiff in the mornings. We'll see how tomorrow goes.
In other news, my weight keeps creeping downwards, which is fantastic. I just need to keep doing the right things. It's kind of been a revalation, recently. I realized that this really isn't so hard.
Congrats on the house, Jackie! Wow, I can't believe how quickly things are moving for you. That's fantastic!
Laura, I want to echo what Cindi said: You aren't being a slug, you're taking a needed rest. Your running times and distances are really impressive. You're going to fly through that 1/2 marathon.
Have a good weekend everyone. I think I'm going to enjoy the gorgeous weather we're having and go to the beach with some friends on Sunday. Or, I may sleep in. Andrew will be working so I'll see on Sunday how motivated I am to pack a lunch and go to the beach.

Heide-what are doing to loose weight??? I used to find it fairly easy, but this year it is so much more difficult. I'm glad to hear that you're resting your arm! Enjoy the beach if you decide to go.

Hey everyone, just a quick note to ask for some prayers for my SO's oldest son. He is 19 and was playing at a very high level hockey inviational tournament and was illegally checked from behind  (the guy who checked him was immediately ejected). He suffered a compound fracture to his left femur. He seems to be getting excellent care (at one of the trauma hospitals in Boston) and we are very thankful that his back was not injured. But considering he was hoping to get a Div. I scholarship offer this year, and was about to sign with an agent, and opt into the NHL draft this spring (the Atlanta Thrashers apparently wanted to draft his this year but he did not opt in), this could have some serious implications on his hockey career. Thanks Laura

Consider it done. I can't believe the nerve of some people. Prayers for peace and understanding are being lifted.

Laura,
I'm so sorry to hear about your SO's son. I'm wishing him a quick and full recovery, and hope this will not affect his future career. I'll be thinking of you all.

Laura-so sorry to hear about SO's son. Was he playing in Boston? At least you know he has access to some of the best doctors in the country there. Of course, we will all pray for a full recovery. Please keep us posted.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers everyone. As best I can tell he is at Mass General in an orthopedic trauma unit, which is apparently affiliated with Harvard Medical School -- so yes, Cindi you are right he is probably in the one of the best places he could be for this to happen. We are trying to keep it all in perspective, given how serious it could be (fortunately he is 6'6" -- tall for a hockey player, if he was closer to 6 feet it is likely his back could have been broken). Our prayers obviously are first for a speedy recovery, but second that he will still be able to somehow get a scholarship out of this (most schools have offered their scholarships by mid-November).

Hi Laura-A friend of mine at the gym works at Mass General on Tuesday nights. I'll find out what ward she is in. A broken back would have been horrible....I'm so glad that didn't happen. That's interesting that his height prevented that. Let us know how he is doing today.
Because of rain and muddy trails, the Cub Scout bike ride was canceled. Hopefully, I'll be able to go for a walk tonight. We're having a lobster bake with some friends from the gym today. I'm looking forward to that!

Thank you Chicago.
Cindi - You're teasing me :D rain and muddy trails. Be still my heart!
Ok - so we had our "fair share" of mud today. I got the chance to "christen" my new running shoes in some gloppy mud. Now I'm ready to really put them through their paces. :D All kidding aside - did my 8 miles and then walked 1.5 miles back down the trail and ran/walked 1.5 miles back up the trail wearing my "shepherds" hat. So I logged in 11 today.
Hot and muggy today - forecasts of thunderstorms later this evening (BTW - that is a standing forecast in Norfolk between about June 15th and September 30th).
Hope everyone else is doing well and keeping cool these days.
Happy trails,
Les

Laura -- stay in touch and let us know how SO's son is doing. More prayers on their way.
Not too much new here. The family made it to the gym today after a stop at Half-Priced Books (where we unloaded half the contents of our bookshelves prior to moving) and SportMart (where we bought DS his in-ground BB hoop system). The movers will haul it to De Pere, where I have to find someone to dig a 28" hole, fill/set with concrete and we're in business. Since the portable ones need to be filled with 100 lbs. of water and topped w/bags of play sand to keep from tipping in storms, they aren't exactly portable, so we went with the in-ground thing. They also had trampoline nets on sale -- we didn't buy today but I think I'm going back tomorrow to finish off that project.
So....I cut a few corners on my workout today, went to the sports bar for lunch and had a couple of beers, then came home and fell asleep while watching women's tennis on Fox Sports Network! :o I have been busy since waking up from my nap, however, cleaning closets and dressers. I lead such an exciting life....
I registered the family for National Night Out today -- do any of you participate in that? It's a night out against crime, a community-based movement that encourages you to turn on your outside lights, get to know your neighbors and strengthen your community. Many Wisconsin communities participate in it because the utility companies underwrote many of the events starting about 15 years ago. Wauwatosa has a great event -- we generally get about 4,000 people to gather at our local park/football/athletic complex and walk a 2-mile route along the river parkway with flashlights and stop at various businesses in the village business district for goodies. The t-shirts this year have a really attractive design, and I will feel nostalgic that this will be my last NNO here. We also are doing the Hank Aaron State Trail walk/run next weekend with our neighborhood association -- it is the last link to be completed in a trail that will link the Mississippi River with Lake Michigan across the state.
I'm going to finish cleaning the dresser drawer that I started a half-hour ago. My attention span these days is short....

Sounds like you had a total body workout there ;) ... Upper body workout with weights (working on endurance), hand to eye coordination, aerobics (scurring around the house), more upper body workout - just a non-traditional workout. Good for you.

I've heard of it but I'm not sure when it's held and if there any real local support for it in Norfolk. I've been away most of the past couple summers so I'm not sure what really goes on for NNO. When is the event held?

No problem with a short attention span - I think that's called a healthy reaction to stress. Do what you can when you can. It's not like you aren't wrapped up with lots of stressful things right now - moving, new job, teen age son, to name a few recent ones. It will all come together when it needs to.
Happy Saturday to all.
Peace,
Les
