Tami, lets start it on Sundays! COngrats on surving the minefield that was the baby shower!
Tyra, YEA on size 8!
Dont worry, Im not defecting to the SB support group...Im only going to do it for the 6 weeks period!
Susan, hope you enjoyed the ribs:) What kind of rolls did you have? I LOVE Phildelphia ROlls!
Well, we have all been talking about exercise...Ive started doing Power Yoga and Pilates (my tummy is sooooo sore!) Ill do that during the week and IF it ever cools down (hopefully NOvember), Ill walk on the weekends (my town has 200 miles of wooded walking trails!)
Thats my plan...lets hope I stick to it once school starts:)
Im going to do a few days of Phase 1 starting today to get strongly back on track before I start back to work....soooo here I go:)
Have a great day all!!!

I had 3 California sushi rolls last night and finished the other 3 this morning. 25 g. carbs:eek: But worth it for the day!! The ribs are marinating as I type! The recipe says to use the marinade to baste the ribs, I plan to boil it first. Mde me a little worried this morning when I reread the recipe!!
200 miles of wooded trails, I am jealous! I have so many exercise tapes I think I will pull one out today! I love YOGA and Pilates, do I need another tape? (No DVD's yet.)
Have you planned your menu for the day? I now that tonight I will be off the wagon but jumping back on tomorrow morning! Have a great day everyone!!

Amen sister! We ordered pizza for the kids last night. Dh and I both ate some cheese and I so wanted to dive into that crust. But I didn't. That's almost 2 weeks now that I've been able to keep it together cheating-wise (ok ok except for some red wine here and there but if you knew my kids you'd understand!) It's encouraging to feel like this is a program that we can live with.
On the down side I did have some blood sugar issues yesterday. I worked out hard on the ellipse (yea me! hee hee) and even though I ate a snack I started feeling really crummy. So I broke out my Eli's health bread and had a slice with avocado. Which, starting tomorrow, won't really be cheating and it did make me feel better.
Tyra- A shopping trip like that kind of makes you feel better than eating a bag of chips doesn't it? Congratulations!
Gail - well if I don't serve slush at our x-mas party I'll have to answer to some disappointed people so I'll work it in somehow! Bourbon has no carbs anyway.

Susan - I would boil the marinade too. If you're going to continue cooking the ribs for a long time after you baste them it's safe. But I always find that if I start basting ribs too early the sauce just burns so I wait until the last 15 minutes or so. Don't you love unsolicited advice? Enjoy!

Thanks so much! I get nervous about using marinades to baste when the pork is sitting in it! But DH was so excited about the recipe. Will post either way, good or bad:) .

I tried the zucchini mock pizza last night and it was very good. It's not like eating regular pizza that you can pick up, but it hit the spot. Thanks for posting those low carb recipe ideas.
Today is my birthday and I am going to splurge! I just had the SBD oatmeal pancakes for breakfast with some sliced strawberries and Atkins syrup on top. Phase two might not be so bad! LOL
I want to go see the movie Seabiscuit this evening and I have already decided that I am going to eat movie theater popcorn. I'll get a child sized bag and eat the whole darn thing! Instead of cake I bought a fifty fifty no sugar added chocolate bar with almonds and I'll have a square or two of that. I am craving chocolate more than cake! I hope the no sugar added bars are not nasty.
Keep up the good work everyone! I have 15 to 20 pounds to go and I know it will take some time. I also need to add some regular exercise back into my life, especially weight bearing since I am not getting any younger.;)

Happy birthday Cindy! I found that the no-sugar added chocolate aren't nasty..they just aren't that good. The chocolate doesn't have the right consistency to 'melt in your mouth'. I have found that I would prefer to have one or two real chocolate chips that I let melt in my mouth than more no-sugar chocolate. Trick is to hold it to TWO chocolate chips :D
Just a suggestion, instead of the popcorn, I find that if I bring nuts into the movie, I'm happy. They are salty and crunchy, on plan and healthy for you...but enjoy the popcorn if you decide to have it :)

Tyra, Congratulations on the new sizes!! That's wonderful!! It's also encouraging!! This has not been a terrific past 2 days on SBD. <Gasp!> I just ate some blueberries, and my 2 weeks don't end until tonight.
Oh well...I'm going to stick with Phase 1 for an additional week. No visitors lurking around...no training...just pretty much my normal hectic self. Wish me luck.

Today we made the South Beach hummus and it is really yummy and tasty! I posted the recipe on the low carb recipe thread, but its also in the book. I'm looking forward to this as a snack this week.
I guess things are going well - we went to the Farmers Market to get good salad greens and veggies. And surprisingly, that was harder to get through because of all the yummy fruits than the french fry temptation, pizza temptation OR the cupcake temptation of last week. Fruit is so hard for me to give up, especially right now.
And especially while I'm seeing increased muscle tone but not really exciting numbers on the scale, it makes me wonder is this really worth it for those last 10?
But I'm going to stick it out for this week, and then begin Phase 2 which I think will make me much happier. DBF says he might do an extra week of Phase 1 but I just don't think its worth it to me. Phase 2 is a losing phase as well, at this rate I'm losing at the phase 2 rate anyways - I might as well be happier while doing it!
Anyone else feeling frustrated and collecting cake/cookie/brownie recipes like they are going out of style? I don't know if I'm torturing myself or what!

I did in the beginning...and it was even harder when I would bake for my kids and not taste or eat it myself. Over time it has gotten MUCH easier and now I just skip recipes that are higher in carbs then I care to eat.
I agree about the fruit. I started the end of February so the fruit wasn't that big of a deal. I LOVE summer fruit, but I have found that I can limit how often I eat it. One peach a day is anywhere from 8 - 17 carbs depending on the size. Its worth it to me! I just figure out a day that I'm low on carbs and really enjoy the peach :D I have also learned to substitute fruit. Nectarines are twice the carbs as a peach, so I eat peaches instead. Watermelon is low in carbs (and is a good source of lycopene). Cantaloupe, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, all are relatively low. A few cherries (not all I can eat)...etc.
I really want CORN ON THE COB. Think I'm going to break down soon...

Day 8 - I couldn't take eggs again for b-fast! I had cottage cheese with 1 T. toasted walnuts, 1T ground flaxseed, a little splenda and nutmeg. Yum!! I did have some of DD's b-day cake this weekend, but otherwise I've stuck to the program.

Hi everyone-
Today is day one of Phase 2! And I've got to say I'm a little nervous. I've lost 6 pounds which is great but I feel like the book raises your expectations so much that I'm a little disappointed. I think I'm nervous now because there are fewer restrictions. I guess I'm feeling like I'll unknowingly make the wrong choices - like too many carbs or too much fat or something ... "wrong". Does anyone else have these trust issues with themselves? I guess it's really a lack of confidence in this area.
OK, there's my vent. Thanks. Focussing on the positive - 1. This is a super healthy way to eat. 2. I haven't "cheated", or really wanted to in 2 weeks. 3. I have been getting some exercise, which is a proactive thing to do. 4. I did lose 6 pounds so instead of needing to lose 35 pounds, I only need to lose 29!
Jennie - that sounds like a good breakfast. I forgot to post what I have for breakfast when I don't want eggs (my issue w/ them is the time). I like the Morningstar Farms "sausage" patties. They're 80 cals each, have protein and fiber, and no trans-fats.
Happy belated birthday Cindy. Hope you enjoyed that popcorn! How was Seabiscuit? I'm reading the book right now and love it. But my favorite horse book is Jane Smiley's Horse Heaven. (no, not trying to turn this into the low carb book group, but it's a good book!)

Happy day-after-your-birthday, Cindy!
Yesterday was my last official day of SBD Week 2. I've lost 8 pounds and 13 inches. I can live with that. I'm doing elliptical training every other day, and weight training on the in-between days. I am having trouble doing the sustained activity of the elliptical. I'm doing it before breakfast, and between that and the low carbs, just really don't have much strength. I'm going to stay on Induction for two more weeks. I have one more baby shower to get through (although this one will have a veggie tray and meats and cheese--so at least I can eat), and a week-long class that is 9 hours a day with no lunch break (everybody brings their own food). Two more weeks will allow me to add back in some carbs at the beginning of school, so that will be a good time for the extra energy!
Last night, I dreamed that Emeril himself gave me a piece of chocolate cheesecake, which I ate. I felt so guilty, then I remembered I was dreaming. After that, I had "dream" Mexican food. It was good. So, I've figured out that dreaming is the way to cheat. I dream in all 5 senses, and really enjoyed that food. :D

Today is Day 8 of Week two and so far so good! I am able to fit into some smaller sizes and Fri I wore jeans for the first time in a year!
I cheated a little bit this weekend having some tastes of carbs but nothing bad and I also exercised and drank lots of water so I don't think it had too much of an adverse affect.
Just need to get through this week and reward myself with a little party for a friend on Sat!
My cravings have slowed down. Last week I wanted ice cream, pizza and pasta. Dh thankfully vetoed it all!:D I am definetly getting a slice of pizza next week, though!
Congrats to everyone losing!

Thought I would check in and say that this is Day 2 on Phase 1 on the SBD. Unfortunately, DH is not participating so I'm hoping it will go smoothly. He is very good about going with the flow and is trying anything new I prepare. He just adds in a carb here and there to make himself feel more "full".
We had our chol. tested for life insurance recently, and mine was 247 (I'm only 24) but with no hereditary heart disease. I am also 30 pounds or so over weight. So, hopefully this will be the answer for me.
I just got done reading through last weeks thread and thought this would be a good place for support!!

You pretty much described how I felt at the end of Phase 1 Barbara -- glad I was seeing weight loss but somewhat disappointed that it was somewhat less than the "advertised rate" and wondering if I'd done something wrong. It sounds from your positive affirmations like you've got the right attitude though! :)
I've been S-L-O-W-L-Y adding carbs back in (some fruits mostly) and paying real attention to putting my fork down when I'm no longer hungry (which has gotten surprisingly easier to do when low-carb than when low-fat). I'm still on a downward trend, so I figure I'm doing something right.

That is funny! Emeril hasn't been personally feeding me in my dreams but I have dreamed that I ate bread one night and another that I had a dessert or something with sugar. It seemed really real and I was pertubed at myself for screwing up the 2 week "fast".

I jumped on this SBD (hate that name) diet last Friday, today is day 5, already I've lost four pounds. I'm very surprised since I have so little to lose. I only want to lose 8 more pounds so I'm pleased so far. I can see that I will be thrilled to start phase 2. I want an apple!

Feeling tired and under-the-weather today. I actually called in sick for camp tomorrow (got the day, might as well rest up). I don't think it really has to do with the diet, probably more the rainy/stormy weather but just feeling generally blah and loopy today.
Survived making rice krispy treats on Monday. Really - I don't recommend teaching preschool on a diet. To all the teachers on summer vacation - be glad that you are!
On a side note we made this last night and it was extremely tasty! It is pesto season ....
Broiled Tomato with Pesto
Serves 6
Ingredients
3 fresh tomatoes
2 cloves garlic
1 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1⁄4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons pine nuts
Instructions
Cut the tomatoes in half. Combine the garlic, basil, olive oil, Parmesan, and pine nuts in a blender or food processor. Puree until smooth. Spoon the mixture onto the top of each tomato half. Place the tomatoes on a broiler pan and broil about 3" from the heat until lightly browned, about 3–5 minutes.

as someone who once was veggie and still like the idea of this way of life, I was excited to find info about being veggie on SBD.
I wont go 100% because I truely believe my body needs the animal proteins to feel the way it should, but I love having the veggie option for several days (or at least meals) a week:)
I got the info from the website and I have it on a word doc if anyone is interested. I dont know if there is a way to put it here, but I would be more than happy to email it to anyone who asks:)
Im also going to put this on our recipe board:)

I just wanted to share a product review with those of you watching carbs -- Keto Spaghetti!
Low Carb Spaghetti (http://www13.netrition.com/keto_spaghetti_page.html)
This stuff is really good! The texture is firmer than regular spaghetti. I'd describe it as tasting like a firm, wheat, vermicelli. With 22 grams of protein and only 5 effective carbs per serving, this would be a good alternative for people watching carbs and for those just trying to increase protein. Anyway. Thumbs up! BTW. I ate mine topped with a serving of turkey chili. The chili I used was high protein, but not low carb. I'm sure there are plenty of low carb chili recipes out there, though.

I am here to tell you I ate the whole small bag of popcorn like I had planned and I am still alive! LOL I was a little "puffy" the next day from the salt and carbs. Yesterday I ate like phase one for a day and today my weight is right were it was pre Birthday. The Fifty 50 chocolate almond bar was not nasty like I feared. It doesn't quite melt or have that same mouth feel as my favorite Dove dark choclates but it was not too bad. I'll try the pure delite brand next time to compare. All in all I survived my planned cheat pretty well.
Okay I have to sneak in a quick movie review...
Seabisciut is a good clean feel good movie. I enjoyed the movie and have read the book as well. I am a horse owner so I had to go!

Hi everyone - yesterday's post got lost in aol land but since it was simply more grousing about not losing the 8-13 pounds "advertised" I'll move on:rolleyes:
Helios - I totally know what you mean. I actually have 3 of those carb-eating machines (otherwise known as a 5, 3, and 1 year old child) around me at all times. This means that, like you, I'm actually handling a lot of food that I can't eat. The pain of picking up a bag of nice hot french fries, taking some out, and putting them on someone else's plate!! No more pbj crusts, chicken nuggets, goldfish, chex mix, or popcorn for me. (probably why I'm losing weight) And yes, my kids all ate Rice Krispie treats, right in front of me, the other day. And I didn't waver. Yea me!
Cindy - Sounds good. I think on phase 2 you actually can eat dark chocolate can't you? A little?
Emily - How's it going? My dh's cholesterol numbers have come down really well between doing this and exercising. I want to get a physical in a couple of months too.
Linsley - I think it does get easier. You kind of "forget" about carbs. For me it was also learning how often to snack so that I didn't crash.
Christie - I agree about the name. People always go "oooh SB" and I'm like - "Uh uh, it's not glamorous" Although I saw an on-line ad for it that shows a woman in a bikini and says "no exercise, no forbidden foods" So someone's perpetrating that image!

Myth: It makes no sense to count carbs; the only thing that counts is calories
Your weight is a simple result of calories in and activity out. To lose weight, all you have to do is cut calories and/or add exercise
Truth: The connection between calories and weight is far more complicated than most writers will have you believe
Of course it is true that energy in is balanced with energy out. Weight gain or loss (in fat) happens when the balance is off on one end or the other. The problem is that even subtle changes can make a big difference in your energy consumption and you can't predict how your body will react.
Lowcarb changes the equation. A lot of people, including some fervent lowcarbers, disagree and say it all comes down to calories, that there is nothing special about lowcarb in that way. But it makes sense to me. I suggest you read what Atkins and the Eades (in Protein Power) have to say on the subject. See if you agree with their reasoning. Even if you don't, at least you'll know where they're coming from.
The way lowcarb changes things is by normalizing insulin. Just because most people can handle the wide swings in blood sugar and insulin levels brought on by a modern diet doesn't mean they are healthy or desirable. For those of us who have diabetes, hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, or a similar disorder, the stabilizing effect of lowcarb is like striking lifelong metal chains from our bodies.
Lowcarb also changes calorie use by making the body burn fat (dietary or stored) instead of dietary carbs for fuel. Your body does this readily and it's perfectly safe. But is less efficient so it burns more calories. People who lowcarb for health but who do not need to lose weight have to be certain they get enough fat so they don't keep losing.
Health experts from all diet persuasions will tell you that lowering calories changes your metabolism. For people who aren't overeaters, eating fewer calories may not lead to losing weight. A great many diets, lowfat, lowcarb, or the so-called "balanced" diets, advocate eating calories within a certain healthy range. For people from normal weight to about 100 lbs overweight, this range is generally about 10 calories per pound of current weight. There are different formulas, some based on age and activity level, but 10 calories per pound is a good place to start. People who are very overweight should eat more total calories than people of lower weight, but not as high as 10 calories per pound (the formula isn't linear).
Increasing your activity level (if it's not already high) is always a good idea, if your health allows it. It does help you to improve health and lose fat, but that's true for any diet you might be on. Lowcarb is no exception.
Myth: Lowcarb only works because it keeps people from bingeing on carbs
Truth: And this is a bad thing because???
This is a variation of the lowcarb is low-calorie myth. I was pretty floored when I read this. How on earth does this (true for many) fact make lowcarb a bad diet? The truth is that people who reduce their carbs radically as a result of lowcarb end up eating in the same range of calories as people whose original carb intake wasn't as high. Some carb-bingers don't have to go lowcarb in order to lose weight and regain health, they can eat moderate-carb diets. But most need lowcarb for at least a little while to break the cycle.
Myth: Your brain and muscles need glucose to work, so you have to eat carbs
Truth: Carbs are only one source of glucose. Your body can easily convert dietary fat and protein and stored fat to glucose
Myth: Lowcarbers eat way too much fat
Truth: Fat is not the evil it's made out to be
Everybody needs some fat. Read Ann Gittleman's book Beyond Pritikin for a wonderful explanation of why, from a former Pritikin (no-fat) nutritionist. The truth is that research on fat in the last several decades has been distorted by political aims, force of personality, and a whole host of other things that have nothing to do with health (or science). Most studies lump unhealthy fats in with healthy ones and then conclude they're all bad. What get call "bad fats" are not always bad and the real health risks are not always acknowledged.
Forget what you've seen about saturated fat being evil and mono and polyunsaturated fat being good. All of these can be good or bad. The real bad fats are hydrogenated fats (trans-fatty acids) as found in most margarine, mayonnaise, shortening, crackers, and other products. Rancid fats (you'd be surprised how many are), overheated fats (also common), and fats filled with pesticide residue, and for animal fats, hormone and antibiotic residue. These are the truly evil fats.
Lowcarbers must eat more fat than the standard recommendations. It's the only way to make up the calories lost when they cut back on the carbs. We're not going to make them up with protein (see above). As long as the fats are good ones, this is not a problem. A few people have trouble with certain animal fats raising cholesterol but this is not the majority. The myth that dietary cholesterol is linked directly with blood cholesterol is alive and well, but there's little to no truth to it.
If you want to avoid saturated fats, animal fats, or any other type, you can. None of these are essential on a lowcarb diet (though some saturated fat and other specific kinds is important for health). You don't even have to eat any animal products at all. Just be sure you're getting enough essential fatty acids (flax seed is your friend, so is fish if you eat it) and that you eat enough good fats (olive oil is a winner) to keep your calories at the right level.

I am on day 10 and doing pretty good. I definetly am looking skinnier, though no one has noticed. Probably want to see if I'll actually keep it off this time! I'm starting to look like the petite person I should be! YAY!
I think in about two weeks I should be in my old size 6 pants. It's weird, I went to the gap last week and bought a pair of 6's and they fit perfectly, if not a pinch loose. I tried on a pair of 6's I have from the gap from 4 years ago and they don't even come close to fitting. (this was two weeks ago, though but I'm afraid to try them on again!)

Right. That's the argument for not taking them all the time. However, what if you just wanted to go to a restaurant and have a huge baked potato without cheating?
There's a big article in one of those grocery store magazines, Woman's Own. All the article says is how great these pills are and there are quotes for a doctor on how effective they are. This makes me wonder if that magazine is just some disguise for a bunch of promotional/PR type.

I went to the grocery store last night to pick up some cheese and veggies, and meandered through the cookie aisle and the bakery. Nothing really enticed me or made me upset that I couldn't eat it...
up until....
The fresh strawberry kiosk sitting next to the zucchini!!! OH MY GOSH!!! They smelled FABULOUS!! :( Oh well, I suppose I can go there and get some beautiful red gems when I get to Phase II.
I haven't been hungry hardly at all and I've noticed that I get full a lot quicker than I used to. DH informed me that my stomach must be shrinking. I think I just spent my whole life eating until I was STUFFED and now I'm eating until I'm full.
Hope everybody else is doing great! :D :D

Hi all! I am nearing the home stretch on Day 11! I did cheat this morning and had a snack size yogurt parfait from McDonalds which is better than the egg mcmuffin I was contemplating! I don't feel bad for it either because those blueberries and strawberries were FABULOUS!
Today I have on another pair of jeans that I haven't fit into for a year! Wonderful feeling! And we went out to eat last night and I had a salad and didn't even sneak a french fry from DH's plate! I know if I did, I probably would have eaten them all! Fries are definetly my weakness!
Hope everyone else is doing good!:)

I feel your pain Emily... for me it was the fresh peaches... I couldn't help wandering by them almost every trip to the grocery store during Phase 1 - like some kind of lost love. I can tell you that they taste so-oooooo good after two weeks of virtually no sugar, and that a little ends up going a long way.
Glad to hear you're doing well with the program and hope everyone else is as well.

Yes the fruit! That is really what I miss most. I'm ending Phase 1 a day early so I can go to the Farmer's Market again and get fruit and start Sunday with a beautiful smoothie!
The berries, peaches, melons - I've never been a big melon fan in my life and now I can't stop lusting after them!
I think life will be better with fruit in it. THen I'll work on my cravings for baked goods..... ;)

Kim, how are you liking the SBD site? Are you finding it helpful/useful enough for the money?
Nope. In fact, I cancelled minus a $5 fee...
Emily, sorry about the fruit:(. It will be over soon!
Linsleyd, I can think of LOTS of things worse to "cheat" on than yogurt.... (like the cheesy-breadsticks I had last night....woke with a tummy ache this am!!!)
First day back to work.....one of my friends is doing SBD and another Atkins, so we can support each other. FOr the first time in 3 weeks, I wasnt tempted to cheat today....I had other things on my mind besides food.....!!!

I passed a big hurdle today. I went to Costco and didn't try a single sample, didn't even pay attention to what they were serving! However, I next went to the farmers market and I did get some corn on the cob. I am not going to see the corn go out without one more taste.

I will say I have to admire you all SO much for starting this in the summer. I started Atkins in February and there wasn't that much fruit to tempt me :D By now, I have the cravings under control and the knowledge to know how much fruit I can have before it affects the scales.
