View Full Version : POLL: What foods do you miss?

Since we're all eating healthy (either always have been, or just starting), I was wondering what foods you all miss eating.
I can do without chocolate. Potato chips? Yuck. McDonalds? Blah.
If I could, I'd eat ice cream all day long. Not frozen yogurt (although I like it), not Dairy Queen, not ice milk, but good old fashioned ice cream. Any color, size, flavor, shape. It's now only a summer treat for me, and only once every other week. I can keep it in check that way.
And doughnuts? Don't even get me started on doughnuts. I once ate a half dozen in one sitting without even REMEMBERING the first three.
Okay now that's embarrassing. Anyone else?

This is so funny, Sandy -- I was just thinking about this very topic last night as I was making some poppers (jalepenos stuffed with cheese, breaded and fried) ostensibly for guests. I just had to have one or two (okay, three). The only other thing I just gotta have occasionally (but every few months seems to do) is a chocolate-covered doughnut.

Sandy,
I know what you mean about the ice-cream!!! I try to get little pints of ben & jerry's ( I LOVE that kind of ice-cream). I try to eat a little bit then forget about it for a while.
IT DOESN"T WORK!~%$&^$$#%#^
I have this nagging voice in my head
"there is ice cream in your freezer"
"did you know that all you have to do is open that freezer door, take out a spoon, and you'll be in heaven?"
and so on. I think that ice cream is my biggest vice. But, it is big enough.

Chips and homemade guacamole and a couple of beers or margaritas. These are my downfall. I can't seem to stop at just a few so I rarely make guacomole and never order it at restaurants. I would just sit there and shovel it into my mouth non-stop and then lick the bowl clean!

I think I would cringe to put some of the things I used to eat in my body, but occasionally I miss Campbell's Bean with Bacon Soup. Yup, I used to love the stuff...sometimes my sister and I would fry a piece of Oscar Meyer bologna in the microwave until it curled up into a bowl, and then fill it with soup. Mmmm.
Also, peanut butter and Lay's chips sandwiches on toasted white bread.
Gosh, my mind is being so sinful today! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I can live without desserts and Snickers bars don't tempt me. McDonalds is plain nasty and so is KFC. But I cannot live without cheese.
There are so many yummy, gooey things I miss: pizza with everything, bacon egg and cheese sandwiches, lasagna made the really sinful way, baked ziti, grilled cheese sandwiches, goat cheese and crackers with roasted garlic, bagels with a hlf block of cream cheese....so sad over here...wishing for Sunday.

Emily - I'm just having a visual here of two young girls standing at the microwave, rubbing their hands together as the bologna curls - ready to glob that soup over it - I'm giggling here............
Oh my, I just remembered fried bologna sandwiches with hot mustard................

My dad used to spread peanut butter on bologna, then roll it up into a tube....yummmy (although I can just imagine the stomache acheI would get if I ate one now....) Hw also would put a piece of colby cheese on a piece of bologna and put it into a frying pan...(daddy wasnt into any kind of health....)

Emily that is soooo funny. I loved peanut butter with potato chips when I was little. I tell people that and they think I am nuts. Although I ate mine on hot dog buns. What's up with that? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

I have to get on the ice cream band wagon. It was the only dessert we regularly had in my house as a kid (otherwise, it was "you can eat a piece of fruit" -- my mom never understood that fruit to a kid is practically the opposite of dessert!). Anyway, my husband and I will occasionally indulge in Starbucks Java Chip (oh, heaven!). Unfortunately, my husband's dietary needs are to put ON weight (why has this curse been placed on me?) so he gets to have Java Chip much more often than I do. Sometimes I'll buy Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie frozen yogurt when I buy him the Java Chip to lure me away. It usually does the trick, but it's not the same!

I used to eat peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches with potato chips layered in the middle and it had to be eaten along with a glass of heavily CHOCOLATE milk. The taste combination was indescribable. No kidding, you are no doubt saying. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I came across this quote in either Bon Appetit or Gourmet a couple months ago and for some reason http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif it seems appropriate here:
"Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos" - Don Kardong 1976 US Olympic Marathoner.
I still eat most of the same stuff I used to, just less of it (such as cheese, chocolate, alcohol, ect). But there are a couple things I really don't eat anymore and miss: those little white powdered doughnuts and, horrible as it may sound, I really do love Big Macs. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif Gina

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! That includes chocolate with peanut butter (Reeses peanut butter cups and more gourmet versions of the same) and the gone-but-not-forgotten Haagen Daz deep chocolate peanut butter ice cream). I also love baked goods; Entenman's chocolate enrobed donuts; cakes with buttercream frosting and cookies. Since I'm not as tempted by ice cream as by baked goodies, and my husband prefers ice cream (so I end up eating most of the baked stuff), we usually have ice cream in the house, but I rarely bake or go to the bakery. On the non-sweet front, cheese is wonderful (anyone see that commercial where the little girl's house is FILLED with amazing toys on Christmas morning; the dad says "those must have been some cookies you left Santa" and the girl replies "I didn't leave him cookies, I left him cheese"?) So many wonderful foods, so much fat and so many calories! Sigh.

As a dietitian many people ask me what they can feed their 88 year old grandparent (or parent)who has high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc.
I always give the same reply:
If I live to be 88 I am going to live on a steady diet of oreos, bacon and Mountain Dew. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I'm another ice cream junkie. There is a song by Sarah McLaughlin that I play for my husband to set a romantic mood - the main line is "You're love is better than ice cream, better than anything else that I've tried." My husband knows it's really love if I love him more than ice cream!

You're going to make me cry.....
1. Chocolate, snickers bars
2. Little Debbie Oatmeal cookies with cream in the middle
3. Grilled cheese sandwhich with tons of butter
4. Pizza
5. Fetuccini alfredo
6. cookie dough
7. peanut butter/banana/honey sandwich
8. malted eggs you get at easter
9. chicken wings from Wing 'N More in College Station, TX
10. pepperoni rolls from Double Dave's in College Station, TX
11. Gravy fries from Fat Burger....in College Station, TX
Now I know why I was my heaviest in college!

I think BarbaraL and I should have a pig out session! The first things that came to mind were Entenmann's chocolate donuts (about 50+ grams of fat per donut), Godiva chocolates, and Boston Creme Dunkin Donuts. And of course, the most chocolate thing of all, Berger's cookies. I must admit though, that I still break down once in a while. There is a mall nearby with a Godiva store. I am always finding an excuse to go shopping there so I can indulge in a single piece. (At least that is my intention.)

Emily - we must have grown up with the same taste buds - I still eat Campbell's bean with bacon soup - although I do avoid the fried bologna (I did beg my mom to make it for me as a kid!)
I also ate pb & potato chip sandwiches. Chips added great crunch - an important part of meal appeal for a kid!

FOOD GIRL!!!
You are tooooo funny! My grandfather is 91, and my grandmother is 86. My grandfather is kind of spacey, but other than that he's fine. My grandmother is like she's 66 rather than 86. Anyhow, she keeps grandpa on a STRICT diet (and I mean strict!). He is VERY, VERY skinny, but still had to have quadruple bypass when he was about 75. They live a 7 hours drive away from us, so we only see them once a year or so. We come from Chicago, where we can get a lot of the old German foods that they are unable to get in their little town in Missouri. Anyway, to make a long story short, my grandfather always asks for me to bring him this salami (like a 1/2 pound or something - very little), but my grandmother screams and freaks out, and says "Grandpa is not supposed to eat that!" I always figure like you do - if I get to be 91, I'm eating anything I want!!! Doesn't she understand that 1/2 pound of salami once a year is never going to impact his arteries (assuming he eats such a strict diet the other 364 days of the year)? Doesn't she understand that it takes years for his arteries to clog up? Oh well, believe you me, with all of the "willpower" I have to have now at this age to keep myself healthy and fit (not to mention the hard work excercise), you'd better believe if I make to 80 or 90 I'll be living it up!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

FoodGirl, I loved your post. Sounds like a winner to me. After reading the other posts I could also add real butter to mine. I had forgotten how good toast tastes with real butter. Also those Little Debbie Peanut Butter and Chocolate Wafer bars. Don't know what they are called but I do love them.

Grace & SandyDee,
I am glad you thought the post was funny! After posting it I was afraid that people would think that I was saying that you should try to kill off your 88 year old granny!

Gina,
"Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos" - Don Kardong 1976 US Olympic Marathoner
I loved the quote you found! Don Kardong is a senior writer for Runner's World, as well, and the voice of that quote sounds just like his writing...he always has the funniest quips!
And accoreia -- I thought I was the only one who loves malt balls! Gosh, I used to be able to tear through a carton of Whoppers!

Nothing, really, since I still indulge in a lot of the same things, just occasionally and in smaller portions. What I can miss sometimes is the enjoyment I used to get from foods with a lot of fat. It s not that I feel guilty - I don t since these indulgences are in moderation. Rather, it s that my tastebuds don t always appreciate foods with a lot of fat/grease the way they used to, so occasionally the memory is better than the real thing. That can be kind of disappointing. (Of course, some things taste just as good now as when I was a kid! It all depends.) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I don't use the self-restraint I should so there isn't much I miss but two things I could never live without--
chocolate chip cookies (nice and soft and warm with a glass of cold milk)
french fries (all varieties-- shoestring, big quartered spuds)
I never eat the two together but they are two fo my favorite indulgences (one for the sweet cravings and and one for the salty cravings)!

This post should not be read on an empty stomach. I too indulge once in a while, (makes life more interesting) but the foods I have to stay away from (to prevent a downward spiral) are Dunkin Donuts chocolate crossaints, McDonalds french fries, Hostesss Twinkies, hot dogs w/ bacon, chili and sauerkraut and Baskin and Robbins peanut butter sundaes....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

As I read this and "listen" to the wails and moans of those who've given up their favorite food friends, it reminds me of something my WW leader said in a meeting this week. She cracked us all up, but she's right. She said, "That thing on a plate doesn't have a brain. It didn't go to school. It doesn't drive a car. It hasn't raised children. It doesn't have a bank account. But all it has to do is lay there on a plate and say, 'Take me,' and you say, 'Okay.' Who's in charge here?"
