I'm not a Whole Foods fan, but I thought this was pretty cool.

Nutrition: Chain sends trans fats packing

08/06/2003

At Whole Foods Market, you don't have to read the fine print on food labels to see if a food is free of trans fat.
Effective immediately, the natural foods grocery chain has removed all products containing hydrogenated oils - the source of trans fats - from its shelves.
"Any product that contained hydrogenated fats has been removed ... and replaced with a similar product made without any hydrogenated fats," says a local representative.

Here's a sample of products that got the boot and what's replacing them.

Following are foods affected by the new policy on hydrogenated oil at Whole Foods Market.

Out -- In
Carr's Table Water Crackers--365 Organic organic water crackers, Devonshire water crackers

Pepperidge Farms Goldfish Crackers--Our Family Farm Captain's Catch crackers

Red Oval Crackers--Hain stone ground wheat crackers, Starr Ridge stone ground crackers

Willow Run Margarine--Earth Balance Margarine

Pepperidge Farms cookies--Immaculate Baking Co. cookies, Loacker wafer cookies

Very cool.

I think more healthy food stores should really move in this direction...

This is great news. A couple of weeks ago, I went to the doctor and found that my cholesterol is a little bit too high so I have to watch it.

This is great news, thanks for sharing.

Two of my favorite crackers, Hain Rich crackers (imitation Ritz) and another Hain cracker that is imitation wheat thins, were not in stock last fall (apparently there was a big distributor problem). Anyhow, I went to find a substitute and was shocked to see, as was the stock boy, that some of the crackers had Part.-Hydro. fat in them.

I am happy that they are making the change, and just wish that Trader Joe's would do the same. So many people think that TJs is a healthy grocery store, and while I agree that they have a lot of healthful products, they also have a ton of doozies.

A prime example is their peanut-butter pretzels. A company call HG Foods(?), I think, makes a whole wheat peanut-butter pretzel that is DELICIOUS and has like three ingredients, whole wheat flour, peanuts, salt. However, TJ's pretzels have a tons of crap in them. BTW, you can get the healthy ones at Whole Foods.

Snaps to Whole Foods ;)

From what I've seen, many (if not most) of the crackers at TJ's are made without trans fat. If the label doesn't list hydrogenated oil as ingredient, you're probably good to go. Their Woven Wheats (like Triscuits) are made with canola oil and very good--IMHO, better than Whole Foods', which have no oil at all. TJ's also stocks Kashi TLC crackers and probably many other brands...
