I am interesting in joining or starting a supper club in Austin. I looked at the postings from last year and it sounds like there was a lot of interest at that time. Anyone interested?:)

Hi Penny P,
I'd love to get involved with a supper club! I'm new to Austin and to Cooking Light. I think it would be great fun!

I would be interested! I noticed when one started up last year, but it was at a time that was just too busy for me. We are embarking upon a house remodelling project, including tearing up the kitchen, which won't be over until about end of October (at least I hope it's over by then!) - so my house is not immediately available.

Do you envision a women only group, or a couples group, or anything in particular? Also, where are both of you? I am in northwest Austin, close to Lakeline Mall.

I am flexible. We could have girls only nights, couples nights, whatever. Why not play with it and see what works? I live in south austin, have a good sized well equipped kitchen and don't mind driving a bit to have fun!

I am with you- don't mind a little drive- I am in Pflugerville. As for my preference.... I am married and my husband appreciates all the benefits of CL (that I make yummy food) but I don't envision him wanting to do the supper club thing on a regular basis. That doesn't by any means limit my vision for supper club to only like a womens group though. What I would like to gain is trying new healthy & interesting food (and wine too if others are interested) with nice people.
Any visions others have?

I just read my latest CL and couldn't wait to see if there was a supper club starting up in Austin. I'm in southwest Austin, but not opposed to driving at all. I work from home and am always looking for an excuse to get out of the house.

Do let me know if y'all get something started!

If you are willing to wait a couple months, I would love to be part of your supper club. I am moving to Austin in mid-november and We are looking at homes where Austin, Round Rock and Cedar Park meet. Driving is not a problem for me.

A couples club would be hard for us. We have an 18 month old, and no babysitting options at this point.

I just logged in for the first time -- hoping there would be a supper club austin post. Very exciting...

I live in Northwest Austin and also work from home. I think a supper club with good people, food, and wine would just be great.

What should our next steps be? We could meet for coffee or dinner somewhere convienent to everyone.

I 've belonged to a supper club for the past 7 months. It consists of 4 couples. We meet once a month in one of our homes. At the present time, we have left it up to the couple that is hosting to prepare and wine & dine the other couples attending. It is loads of fun, but can be expensive. As I have read the suggestions from Cooking Light"s Supper Clubs, I believe it would be worth a try to have each couple contribute dishes in a pot luck manner, until everyone is familiar with each other's ideas. My Husband and the three other gentlemen are wine connoisseurs by hobby or business, so we have had the opportunity to have tasted some wonderful pairings with the menu's
selected. However you decide to make the Supper Club click, it's all about socializing with folks who are fun, friendly and enjoy taking the time to indulge in good cooking and hospitality! We never want the night to end. We have a ball!

Hi-
I'm interested in forming or joining a supper club. I live on the edge of Cedar Park, near Lakeline Mall. Looks like there are quite a few people in different areas of Austin interested!

I'd love to meet with a group a few times. I'm interested in hosting, potluck and cooking together, girls only, couples, etc.

FYI: I also eat Low-carb ( or try to) my weakness would be desserts. I take a lot of the recipes in cooking light and cut out as much carbs as I can.

EmilyD

count me as another interested party -- I had looked a few months ago but had just missed the last group that formed. I was hoping others would be interested after the latest issue.

I live in Elgin, east of Austin but work in central Austin. I'm pretty flexible about the format and participation, although I have preferences. If we all meet somewhere, we can decide what would suit a group best, or even whether there's enough interest for more than one group...

My schedule weeknights is pretty open over the next few weeks -- anyone want to suggest some options for a time and place?

And since KristenM isn't in town yet, we could ask her to give us a list of her preferences and have her be a paper presence until she joins us in Austin.:)

It seems there are quite a few people interested. Maybe enough for 2 groups (Austin and a FarNW Austin, CedarPark, RoundRock area). How about we all meet to see what we think?

Is the Arboretum area OK? Is that central enough for everyone?

I'm out of town Sept 16-22; so either Tues,Wed,Thurs night next week or after 9/22 would work for me. Anyone have any other ideas or comments??

:) Let me know when everyone can meet. The Arboretum Area is fine with me. I live in South Austin. I'm interested in a joining a couples club, as my husband and I are anxious to meet new couples. I would like to meet and talk about the possibilities.

OK- I'll take the bull by the horns and dive in. How about everyone that's interested, send me an email with the dates/times and restaurant that are convenient for you. I'll compile that and put some choices on this thread and then we can choose a final date and time. Also do we just want to do a Happy Hour or do a sit down dinner? That might make a difference where we go.

Below are some restaurants in that area:
Manuels'
TGI Fridays
Z-Tejas (outside area)
Iron Cactus (not the best food- but nice bar/happy hour area- outside area too)
North by Northwest
Brick Oven
Macaroni Grill
Rudy's BBQ
Outback Steakhouse
Buca di Beppo
Chuy's

I think you can click on my profile and get my email.

Hello All-

I've received responses from about 8 people. There are 5 or so that posted on this thread that I have not heard back from. Based on comments and suggestions here is what I propose.

For our first meeting: September 25, Thursday at 7 pm at the Iron Cactus at Loop 360/Braker near the Arboretum. It gets a bit crowded about that time; I'll plan to be there about 6:30-6:45 and try to get a table outside (weather permitting) as it's a bit quieter. The bar is nice but is loud esp. if they have a band.

A few days before I will send a link to a map for those that are not familiar.

I have had emails from the following people:

That is about 10 people so far, which is quite a few for a supper club, even if you don't count significant others. Depending on how many actually stick with this and want to do it, it may be wise to split up geographically- say north austin and south austin. It doesn't mean we can't get together for "Girls only" functions and include all of us in Austin!

This gives us about 2 weeks for the others I haven't heard from to check in. About 3-4 days before I will send out a reminder email. I'll bring a list of suggestions/questions we might want to discuss and a signup sheet for address/email, etc. I'm guessing everyone has email addresses, it might be a good idea if everyone had a chat (Yahoo or AOL). That would be a quick way to discuss things, versus the phone.

Based on suggestions and things happening in people's lives, this seemed like a good day/time. Let me know otherwise!

Happy eating!!

Hi!. I live in Cedar Park, and would like to get into a supper club (again) The one I was in folded.

Problem, I don't drive outside of Cedar Park. If I can get a ride, I would love to get in this.

Couples would be good, but I don't think DH would be too interested;)

Good Plan! Iron Cactus is close by for me and the time is perfect. The Dinner Club that I belong to at the present time meets once a month and is for couples...it works out great! I'm hoping we can have as much interest with this group!

Hello,
I am interested in joining the Austin Supper club! I have read some of the messages posted but am a little fuzzy on the details of the first meeting. Could someone email me the details at ses0846@yahoo.com ? I have another friend who is a new subscriber to cooking light and is interested as well. She does not have access to a computer so she's going through me. I don't mind driving a bit for some fun and a good meal! I look foward to hearing from someone and attending the first meeting.

Hello-
I've been quite busy this week and out of town- which is why I have not posted much. I will be posting a reminder about the meeting earlier next week.

Also, we have about 17-18 people wanting to join. Depending on how this takes off, dynamics of the group, who stays in, etc. we definitely need to consider splitting this up into 2, possibly 3 groups.

I assumed mostly the women would come to the meeting on Thursday, I've noticed one or 2 people said they would be bringing their S.O's. I don't think it matters, but you might want to tell the S.O.'s -- in case they want to change their minds!:)

Also, everyone please bring ideas, things you want to do, not do, for a cooking group. This also may be a way to split things up. If certain people want to do go in a different direction, then they could form their own group. I"m babbling now, I'll check back later!

Thanks!

Hi, I am interested in being part of the Austin Supper Club. Right after college, my friends and I would taking turns making dinner for each other on Monday nights and it was a lot of fun, so it's exciting to be a part of that again. I will try to make it to the Iron Cactus on Thurs night. Please put me on the email list: lorrie12345@hotmail.com.

Since I won't be able to make the Thursday meeting, and since it looks like 2 or 3 groups will be formed, I wanted to put my preferences out there so I can be put in the most appropriate group. I'd prefer a non-significant other group, and I enjoy a group that does the cooking together as opposed to everyone bringing a pot-luck dish. In my previous group, we picked a theme (e.g., comfort foods, finger foods, fondue, Asian, vegetarian, or an ingredient theme--we did root vegetables once--awesome!), then each person picked a recipe she wanted to try and brought all the ingredients for that recipe to the hostess's (I'm never too sure about the apostrophe after an "s"--any English teachers out there?) house, and we would cook together (we helped each other; it wasn't like you had to make your own dish only) while sharing a bottle of wine. I really value the process of cooking together; I learn so much from other people that way! A Saturday night would work best for me, but I'll do whatever night the group decides on. Please feel free to email me at jcpaquet23@netscape.net; I'll check the board after I get back from my trip if I don't hear from anyone. Have a great time Thursday!

Hi,

I'm interested in joining one of the supper clubs forming, also. I'm single, so I would prefer a non-SO group, but not necessarily girls only. I live in Round Rock and a Saturday night would work best for me. I love to cook and eat, so this sounds like a lot of fun! Here's my e-mail address lrayborn@austin.rr.com. And I'll keep checking back.

Iron Cactus sounds great for Thurs. night. I am interested in a Couples Supper Club Only. I work with many gals in my office everyday, and we eat lunch together constantly. It's great fun being with them, but when I'm on my own time, I enjoy the quality time with my SO...he is actually a better cook than I am. We belong to a Dinner Club at the present time and would love to join another. It's a great way to meet friends and enjoy time with each other. The club we are in now is quite expensive, as the host & hostess prepare the entire meal for 3 couples. Once a month we meet . The idea of potluck or cooking together is an ideal solution. I would enjoy learning other cooking methods such as grilling meats & baking breads. I would like to be creative with a scrapbook of events to include photos & recipes at each gathering. Eventually the inspirations would be comnbined into a memorable cookbook among friends!

So, I'll ask my SO if he would like to attend Thurs. night as well!

velvetspel76
09-22-2003, 02:53 PM
HI,

I don't think my SO will be able to make it on THurs, but I'll be there. It does not matter to me if it is a SO or non-SO group, as long as we have fun.

CJ Holley: Where do you live? I love your idea of getting a scrapbook together... Looks like maybe you and I will be in the same group since we both have SO's? Saturdays work best for me also. I like the idea of a potluck, or even better cooking together. That seems a great way to get to know each other, taking time together in preparation for the meal, not to just sit down and eat.

I can't wait to meet all of you on thurs. Take care!

I live in South Austin. off of Mopac and Frontage Road before the Southwest Parkway exit. The Arboretum area is not a problem to drive. I work North, near Braker and Metric.

I'm not opposed to the idea of a "girl's only" Supper Club. I would love to have the extra time to schedule that as well. It takes dedication & participation to make a club click! I'm fairly new to Austin and the friends I've meet have SO's also, so it's been easy to establish times for us to all meet and enjoy one another's company. The Dinner Club that I belong to consists of a evening of socializing & dining & Wine to last up to 5 or more hours. We usually try to meet on Saturday afternoon's , so no one is pressured for the evening to end due to work-day responsibilities.

It's great fun to get a group together and host winepairing combinations with foods. The research can be educational & a way to discover what makes a sensational match!

If anyone is interested in a joining a Couple's Supper Club..I'm game!

I am also interested in joining a suppoer club. I can attend the meetng tomorrow at the Iron Cactus. I live up in Round Rock so if we have enough people to split into groups I would be interested in one up North. Hi all-

I wanted to take some of the communication burden of Lilu since it sounds she is super busy!!

I am looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow at the Iron Cactus at 7:00.

For a map to the restaurant click here:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=10001+stonelake+blvd&city=austin&state=tx&zipcode=78759&homesubmit=Get+Map

Lilu, I'll get there by 6:40 so we can get a table (or tables as it looks like a big group is coming).

Look for me (I'm 29, red hair, brown glasses). I'll have a sign or something that says Austin Supper Club.

I think it makes the most sense to divide up by location or by what kind of club (Mainly Girls, Mainly Couples, Mainly Girls with Some Couples events, etc.)

If you can, everyone please email me back tomorrow and let me know if you are coming (and if you're bringing anyone) so we can get a sense of how much space we're going to need.

See you tomorrow!!
Rachel

P.S. I am posting this on the boards to get those who don't have their email posted - feel free to forward if I missed anyone.

Lilu
09-24-2003, 08:11 PM
Thanks Rachel- I was just about to do all that.
I have had other people email me offline. We have more than 20 people interested. Although not that many coming to the meeting tomorrow. We definitly need to split up. Probably by the type of club.

If everyone can bring ideas of what kind of supper club they are wanting tomorrow, how they want it to proceed (i.e., cooking together, potluck, etc.) that can help.

I've already started compiling a list of what people want, who will be coming tomorrow--some have emailed me offline as they can not make the meeting.

Even if we split off, we can certainly all stay in touch and maybe once a year have a special event for all the Austin Supper Clubs.

I will be there around 6:40-6:45 also, reddish hair, notebook and pen in hand :).

Thanks!

Well I had a great time meeting all you ladies ( and Mr. Lindi too!) last nite. I am sorry I had to leave early. I am looking forward to our first meeting!

For those that couldn't make it, we ended up splitting up in two groups, a weekend and a weekday group. It seems the ones that didn't show up were all from the south end of Austin, so maybe you guys can form a third group. Either way, we will figure it out.

Have a great weekend!

It was great meeting everyone last night! We did split into 2 groups: Weeknight and Weekend night (Saturday). Both groups consist of single and married people.

I'm handling the Weekend group for now. It consists of 7 women with 2 or 3 SO's thrown in and we are meeting once a month on Saturday nights. We could probably handle a couple more people. If anyone who couldn't attend is interested, email me lindevelopment@yahoo.com .

Would any of you gals or anyone that didn't make it to the first meeting be interested in lunch around 12:30 on Saturday, October 11th?

Jeannie, (spelling?)I think I have an incorrect email for you. I tried to send you something, but it bounced back... Please email me your addy again (velvetspel76@yahoo.com). I was emailing because I wanted you all to email me the appetizer you are going to
prepare, that way I can get a "menu" together for our first meeting. That way I can forward a list to everyone.

Thanks again!

~Laura

Hey girls,

OK, I've decided to meet at Bahama Breeze. It is also in the arboretum so I think it is a central location for us all to meet. We'll meet around 12:30. I may be there a bit early. It is located at 9505 Stone Lake Blvd. Their phone number is: (512) 345-9979.

I will email my cell number to the gals that have responded in case you can't find me. If you still want to come, please email me if you haven't done so already. Can't wait to see you all!

Hi Laura,

I am going to have to fly to Tulsa on Friday, so I'll be unable to meet you guys on Sat. Wm & I are planning on attending the Supper Club on Oct 18, so keep me posted on where we are meeting?

I'm disappointed that I won't be able to meet everyone!!! Unfortunately there's sickness in my family and I need to travel over the week-end.

Thanks,
CJ
