I am meeting my fiance for dinner immediately after work for sushi, and I am a bit of a novice. Just want to hear what you guys like, what you don't etc.

If you don't think you like the thought of raw fish you can have the eel. There are also all kinds of rolls that have a lot of cooked fish; a spider roll has soft shell crab legs, a crunchy roll has tempura in it. The scallop rolls are also cooked. Of course there are many different varieties of California rolls. If you are not a fan of wasabi (japanese horseradish) let the sushi chef know so that if you do order sushi he does not put it on the rice. I love yellowtail and tuna (hamachi and maguro - or vice versa.) Yummm....I am jealous.

Personally, I stay away from anything with raw fish and eat the other stuff. (I'm not convinced in the least that the raw stuff is safe and I've heard too many horror stories.) However, that said, there are two types of sushi made with tofu. One is a brown tofu envelope that is soaked in syrup and stuffed with rice before it is sprinkled with sesame seeds. I think it's called "amai" or something like that. The other is a soaked tofu that is cut in strips and rolled in rice. Absolutely heavenly! Just take the time to try different things and enjoy yourself. I never thought I would see the day, but for our last family gathering, we actually went to an all-you-can-eat sushi place. And this is a family that thinks Mexican food is "too weird!"

Hey! I am actually going out for sushi tonight too! If you are not afraid to try the raw stuff, I suggest yellowtail--it's very mild and delish. I also like salmon (sometimes it's smoked) and tuna. I have never endured any kind of horrific experience nor heard one that was verified, so I suggest trying it out. If you are a little queasy/hesitant, though, I second the California roll recommendation, as well as tamago (which is cooked egg--sounds gross but is really good) and shrimp, which is cooked.

Also, just to sort of introduce you to the terminology, sashimi is the actual pieces of fish on a small bed of rice, whereas rolls are, you guessed it, various ingredients rolled up in sheets of seaweed. Let us know how your dinner goes!

Actually, I think sashimi is just the fish no rice. I think the term sushi actually means something like "vinegared rice" so it is the fish with the rice. The rolls can either be hand rolls (kind of like a wrap) only the wrap is made out of the nori (seaweed), or cut (which is what a California roll would be.) Okay now that I am sure I have throrougly confused you, I hope you enjoy your dinner. Oh yeah, and appetizer of the soybeans is wonderful and so good for you.

I love sushi! I remember being very nervous the first time, but haven't looked back since. My favorite is Maguro (tuna) - delicious!

If you can, I suggest sitting as close as you can to the sushi chef (if you're at a sushi bar-type setting). Last time we went I would ask the chef what he was making (what was in it, etc.) - he gave us quite a few free samples. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but you never know! And that way you might learn what you like.

Also, the hot green stuff Rachelle is referring to is actually wasabi. Nori is a type of seaweed.

Enjoy!

Salmon is also delicious, and you can have it smoked instead of raw, if you prefer. I avoid clam and other shellfish because it tends to be chewy.
Sea bass also is wonderful raw, as is yellowtail.
If you are going to a good restaurant, I would not worry about getting sick. I have gotten (mild) food poisoning from poorly cooked chicken and beef but never from raw fish. Sushi bars tend to be very careful.

Spicy tuna rolls...yum! And the shrimp ones are all cooked if you're afraid of the raw ones. Spicy usually means it has a spicy mustard/mayo sauce which can actually be quite spicy. And if you don't know, the green stuff served with the sliced ginger is wasabi which is usually horseradish and a small amount should be mixed in with your soy sauce in those little soysauce bowls they give you.

Have fun!

I used to be afraid of sushi and then once I tried it I was hooked (so to speak)! I would recommend: a tekka roll (tuna wrapped in rice), an eel roll (sounds yucky, but tastes great), a california roll or other veggie roll depending on the vegetables you prefer. If you're game, try a seaweed salad too. Of course, get some green tea as well. These are all pretty mild and delicious choices. Enjoy!

Well, I went! My fiance and I shared a platter - it had several California rolls with veggies, crab, and caviar on the outside, tuna, salmon, shrimp, and something that looked like a cooked chicken wing wrapped with seaweed that i didn't like very much.
On the whole, I liked it. The tuna, especially, was good. When my fiance first tried sushi, he immediately loved it. I think for me, it will be more of an acquired taste.
we also had some ginseng soda - called ginseng up! it was so good!!

rofl...yes it is wasabi! I got it all mixed up!! (heck its been over a yr since i last ate any sushi! lol)

oh, to cleanse your plallet, chew the pink stuff (ginger i think!!) then spit it out, i dont think yu swallow it. doing this will cleanse you pallet, and let the flavors of the sushi in! ~:0)

Id also love to learn how to make my own!
