View Full Version : Looking for info on the WW "Points" system

I have been on the "old" weightwatchers system of exchanges ( which is pretty much a diabetic exchange diet ( I am not diabetic though) for the last 6 years. It works for me, but I am curious about how the points system works. I know you get a certain number of points per day. Can you spend the points on any catagory of food you like ( ie, protiens, grains, fats or is there a way you are to allocate them? Part of what has worked for me is the exchange diet makes sure that I eat from all food groups. I keep wondering if I should keep with what has worked for me, or wether to try the "points". :confused:

I never tried the old system. The new points system encourages you to eat healthy foods. Many veggies are 0 points as is a tossed salad with fat free dressing. It doesn't tell you how much of what to eat, but they do give you basic guidelines and encourage you to eat from all groups. The flex points thread below talks a bit about points. I found it to be very easy to follow. I only tried it last February.

Two girls at work are doing this and they told me about the "new" program - it just rolled out this past week. Instead of having a range of points to eat (the low range used to be 18-23 I think), you now get a specific set number of points to eat each day - the girls at work each get 22 they told me. Then you get 35 free points to use throughout the week. You can split those 35 up or eat them all in one day if you want. But we were trying to figure out how this works because it doesn't make much sense. Let's say on the old system, you got your range of 18-23, and now you get your set points as 22 per day. On the old system that would have left you with 1 point extra per day. 1 point times 7 days equals 7 extra points - and now they're giving you 35 extra per week? It doesn't make sense, but I must also say there is a new exercise component that they haven't yet told the group about - they're saving that for next week, so that may answer the questions.
As far as answering your questions, you can "spend" your points on anything you want, they don't steer you necessarily towards specific kinds of foods, but in order to maximize your points (in other words be able to eat the most food for the least number of points) the way the points are calculated means you would naturally eat more fruits/veggies/grains than sugary, fatty processed foods if you want to be able to eat more than a say cup's worth of food a day (that's a big exaggeration, but you get my point). As an example, when say a single slice of regular fatty, cheesy pizza is like 7 points (or whatever it is), you could have several servings of fruits/veggies/grains for that same 7 points, and maybe even less than 7 depending on what it is.
I guess if your old system is still working for you and you like it and it's easy for you to stick with, there would be no reason necessarily to try the "new" system. But if you're bored and looking for a change, everyone I know says it's great and that it works beautifully.

I haven't done WW in a while but I did the points when it first came out. Points were figured using a formula based on calories, fat and fiber of the food (originally no more than 8 fiber, then it went to 4 fiber, I don't know what the max is now). They encouraged you to eat x amount of servings of fruits and veggies a day but didn't have a suggested protein, carb, fat mix.
I find it interesting that they keep tweaking the program. Is it because it isn't working as well as people hope it will or to try and keep peoples interest up? I know they changed the point values of some food (carrots used to be 0 points, now they are 1 pt, apples were 1 pt now they are 2).
I agree with Grace...if you like what you are doing, why switch? If not, give it a try. I did loose weight with it (didn't keep it off) and now lost 30+ pounds with Atkins (which for me is MUCH easier).
