How do you eat your ice cream cone?

MsChievious' thread 'Do you really eat ice cream' on the Great Food board got me thinking about things and I decided to post a poll:

How do you eat ice cream? Whether it's 'the real thing' or some variation of it, there are different ways of eating ice cream. How do you do it?

For the sake of discussion, I'm just dealing with 'hands-off' eating. No utensils involved here, just your face. If you want to expand on things, go for it!

I never order a cone...only in a dish and get a spoon :rolleyes:

ditto. (oops, I didn't see the no utensil rule either. but I would still be "other" since I don't ever eat an ice cream cone.)

cones are messy and they don't even taste all that great.

Okay, I voted other, because although I usually get my ice cream in a bowl, I kind of do a combination of options 2 (hold steady, twirl cone) and 3 (hold steady, cone down).

I rarely eat cones, I am a bowl and spoon person as well. But when I do, I don't have the patience to Lick. I'm a biter. But not with my teeth because they are sensitive....

I'm also a dish person. :D I'm far too messy to eat a cone. However, when I was a student living in the dorms, eating soft serve ice cream in the dining hall was an eye-opening experience when a friend pointed out how guys would watch the girls who just got an ice cream cone ... :p

I'm a dish person too -- though if you bribe me with a homeade waffle cone, I'll probably give in :)

In that case -- I'm a cone swirler at heart. And a lip-biter when there are chunks of goodies :D

Me too! I voted "other" though 'cause I don't think I consistantly eat it a certain way. Don't think I ever bite ice cream though.

Diana...you forgot to mention the necessity of pushing the ice cream down into the cone with your tongue. Ooh...and biting off the end of the cone to get the ice cream out that way. :D Never in public tough.;)

Another vote for the dish.

But as a kid, my favorite treat was a chocolate-dipped cone. I remember that I would bite to crack the chocolate and lick the ice cream by swirling the cone around. Actually, I never really liked the cone itself - I usually just sucked the ice cream out and either threw out the cone, or gave it to my piggy little sister :p

Wow, how funny, I always get a small dish, too! I figure the ice cream is bad enough, I don't need to add calories with a cone! Also, you can add better toppings in a dish, which probably defeats my logic behind not ordering a cone :rolleyes: . If I were to get a cone, I'd want a chocolate dipped waffle cone, in which case I'd still get a spoon. Sorry! Another "other"!

If I think back to my younger cone eating days, though, I'd have to say I'd hold the cone steady and lick the ice cream until it was level with the cone. Then, as the ice cream would be dripping down my arm and on the floor, I'd take a bit of the cone.

Sorry to be so emphatic, but I thought with all the dish eaters out here, my measly vote would be ignored! :D

There isn't a cone out there that I won't eat -- wafer, sugar, waffle -- YUM!

I have to admit: There are times when I'm tired of the ice cream, so I'll dump the remainder out (very little, usually) just so I can eat the cone already! :o

I cannot believe there are so many dish-and-spoon people out there! I may have to re-think my entire association with this BB! Cone is the only way to go! (not too opinionated, am I? :rolleyes: )

Well, I will use a dish-and-spoon if a cone is unavailable, because I love ice cream so much. But IMHO, eating straight from the cone is an essential part of the ice cream experience. (Sometimes, a cold metallic spoon can even interfere with the taste of the ice cream).

And, my favorite is a wafer cone, also known in some parts as a cake cone. (I posted a poll about preferred cones sometime last year).

BTW, I hold the cone and move the tongue . Properly manuevered -- and if the ice cream is properly packed into the cone, and of the optimal consistency -- it's not messy at all.

Where's your imagination, dish people? There are lots of ways to eat ice cream in a dish, with or without spoon: mushing, digging, picking. I know some folks who get a small dish and hold it like a cone to eat it. :p

How do I eat my cone? Hold tongue still and twirl cone. If I'm eating anything other than soft serve, I bite with my lips (too many metal teeth).

If I'm eating with a dish, I tend to sculpt my ice cream as it melts.

I voted other but not because I don't eat cones. Sometimes the cones are my favorite part - if they're waffle cones dipped in chocolate or something like that. Who needs the ice cream? :p

I voted other because it depends on what kind of ice cream I am eating. Soft serve I generally lick. I usually get a twist cone, so I eat it very methodically making sure that the chocolate and vanilla are equal.

If I'm eating regular ice cream I alternate between licking and biting. It depends on how hot out it is and how fast I need to eat it. ;)

I find my teeth are too sensitive to ice cream straight. I tend to avoid popsicles for this same reason. Plus, I'm a bit of a neat freak, I don't like the mess of cones.

Although if you could see my apartment right now.......my classroom is tidy though! :)

Choice #2- I'm a swirler! This is especially fun with a cone of soft-serve twist (vanilla & chocolate). Gotta have the cone, though. It's not as fun out of a bowl IMHO, though the sprinkles stay on better in a bowl and don't end up on your shoes! :o

Another big kid here, but a cone is usually an eat-out treat which I hope will be a waffle one. I'd have to say its most of the above. The truly young at heart can't pick just one! :D

My thoughts exactly! Just like a glass of wine is not the same in a cup! What about 'Going for ice cream' in the summertime? What an essential summer pleasure to go out with your friends or family to the local stand and have a cone dripping down your arm. When I was little I would bite the bottom off the cone and suck the dregs of the melty ice cream out through the hole. I'm 43 years old and can probably still be caught doing it! :D
