View Full Version : Is there anyone else without their jan/feb CL
I haven't opened the threads about reviews or the one about "yeah! I got mine" or what ever it is. I'm seriously jealous of all of you http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif! Just help me out. Does anyone else not have theirs yet? I even saw it at the grocery checkout yesterday.

No Bev, I don't have mine either. Someone in my dinner club got hers last week and I noticed that a couple of others here in Southern California already have theirs as do the stores. I was one of the first recipients last month.
When I first started subscribing and before I discovered the bb, I had not received mine and they told me that if it wasn't delivered by the 2nd of the next month it was considered "late" as they utilize a mailing house that sends the subscriptions out in different shipments.
With Bon Appetit and other magazines that I have subscribed to in the past, they usually have a certain date that you receive it by-usually mid month. I wish that CL could do that as it gets frustrating.

I am sorry to say that I too am without mine. Since I read that others have gotten theirs, I head home eagerly anticipating it, but have been disappointed thus far.

Still waiting in Northern California... I did take a peek at the other post and did find some consolation. One wise BB member still hadn't received hers and she commented that those of us who are still waiting won't have to wait as long for the March issue. That comment made me feel better. Our Jan/Feb issue will be newer to us longer.

I'm still waiting too (in Portland OR). I even went to the store last night to buy one and couldn't find it and another customer said she hadn't gotten hers yet. I was afraid it was just me as I'd re-newed my subscription late.
BevP - I'm just like you - I don't want to even know what the recipes are before I get mine. I thought I'd just take a peak at the BB today but will have to leave quickly so as not to spoil my surprise too much.

I still haven't got mine. (Pa) It's weird reading all the reviews when I don't even have the mag. yet. At least when we get it we'll know what recipes are worthwhile and which ones aren't! I wonder how they send them out? Why don't they just send them out at the same time?
When you have a subscription to a mag. you should always get it before it hits the stands.

All- I don't have mine either here in central NJ. I sent an e-mail to CL today to inquire because I figured by now I must be the only one without it! I don't know whether it's a good sign to see how many others are still without theirs or not!?!?
I already perused an issue in the supermarket which always makes receiving one in the mail after the fact somewhat anti-climactic!
Last year in January I mailed a check to renew my subscription and get one for my sister as a gift. Even though the check was cashed I wound up buying us issues off the stand for 6 months because we never received our subscriptions. I called many times to inquire and was always told it would probably start next month. Finally I discovered they had no record of the subscriptions even though the check had been cashed. They said I would need to mail the canceled check to them. My bank doesn't send those back to me and CL would not accept a copy of my bank statement. I had to call my bank and request a microfiched copy of the canceled check. I mailed that and a very unhappy letter to CL. I told them if I didn't love the magazine so much they would have lost a customer (and her family members who also subscribe). Finally they apologized and offered us six extra issues on top of the full year I'd subscribed for! Just venting! I do love CL and now that I've discovered the bulletin boards I'm an even happier customer.

I'm new to the bulletin board--just needed to get my cooking light fix and see if there was something about why I didn't get an issue yet! I haven't recieved mine here in Monterey CA yet either. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/mad.gif I was thinking it was due to being a two month issue. I've inquired about late issues before and was told that it should arrive before the 7th of the month -- could it be that we shouldn't worry until FEB 7th!! I hope we get it before then--I can't wait much longer.

I got mine today (in Portland, Oregon)....at the grocery store. My subscription ran out at a time when I wasn't cooking. Now that I am back in the kitchen, I am in the process of starting up again.
This thread reminds me of the time my sister got 3 copies of the same issue. Her subscription was late and she got tired of waiting for it so she picked up a copy at the store (copy 1). Then she got mad that she hadn't received it yet so she called CL and gave them a piece of her mind. They told her they would send a copy out to her ASAP, which they did (copy 2). At the end of the month, her regular copy showed up in the mail (copy #3).

Have not received mine nor is it in any of the grocery stores in NW WA. (It looks funny to see all the Jan. magazines in the supermarket checkout line and to see Cooking Light's Dec. magazine with the Christmas Cookies still on the stand) I would like it if they at least warned us it would be late and try to set a consistant time for mailing it out. Are they having problems?

One of us should send a link to this topic to the CL powers-that-be -- perhaps they would listen better to consumer complaints if they saw how many there were. I think I already related this story on the board, but about a year ago when I had a late issue, the operator at CL whom I talked to accused my mailman of stealing my issues!
Apparently they must have some distribution problems. I haven't gotten mine in Baltimore either, and I usually am one of the first to receive it each month.
Well, I sent them an e-mail this afternoon and mentioned this thread. I'm computer illiterate and can't do links. If I get any response, I'll share with everyone. Meanwhile, I'll hit my mailbox to see if there's anything there yet.

I just tried to report my missing issue online, but my account info wouldn't go through, so they prompted me to call via an 800 number. When I called it, it was TIME magazine, but I figured Cooking Light must know what they are doing, so I stayed on the line and waited 20 minutes before I was told that they couldn't do anything for Cooking Light at that number. They looked up the correct number for me (which I could have found in 5 seconds, if I weren't following the instructions the CL website gave me) which was nice, but I still am in a snarly (to borrow a word from Phoebe) mood over this.
It's just not right that regular subscribers have to wait longer than people who buy it off the newsstand.

I noticed that Beth H suggested that someone send an e-mail with a link to this thread. Just wanted you to know I did that (even though I received my CL a while ago). I had noticed a couple people said they didn't know how to do that, so I thought I'd help out. I think it's a real shame that CL is so great about some things, but so bad about actually getting their product to their customers (which seems to me to be the most important part of providing a service).

Still haven't received Jan/Feb 2001 in MN. I have just sent my second E-Mail to customer service-no reply. Why is it renewal notices go out 6 months in advance, but they can't seem to honor their subscriptions? I have been reading the magazine in the checkout line and will probably opt to do that in the future, buying only exceptional issues. I may even wait for issues to go into circulation at the library. Of course, I need a subscription extension the way I need two more heads. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif I also checked the duration of my current subscription while I was in the Customer Service section, and between the missing-issue extension and the knee-jerk responses I once gave to some premature renewal notices, it looks as though I'll probably expire before my CL subscription does. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

Hi,
I had not read this thread before, and I don t subscribe to CL. But reading through the posts, I was shocked! As LG Burns said, the most important part is making sure the product actually gets to the customers - it doesn t matter how great what you have is if people don t receive it, and in a timely fashion.
Anyway, I could tell that some of you were able to extend your subscriptions and then buy the current issue off the newsstand. What wasn t clear, though, was whether some of you were unable to extend the subscription (e.g., because CL refused) and then ended up buying the current issue anyway. If that s the case, isn t CL actually being rewarded for this type of service? This is not to criticize anyone. I know you want the issue no matter what, and I could well have done the same thing in your position, but wanted to point this out...

This is my 3rd year subscribing to this magazine. For some reason, the issues are always late! I also subscribe to 2 other food magazines and recieve them before the month begins. Natasha, I agree with you. I didn't buy my newsstand issue until I made sure I'd be getting some kind of compensation for the missing one, and I always resist buying a duplicate if an issue hits the newsstands a few days before I know I'll get my copy. My rationale is that buying extras is a good way to encourage a magazine to keep sending subscription copies late! Pfui. Who needs that? Bleh. Ptoo.

I just wanted to respond to a couple of comments that the subscription rate isn't that impressive. I suppose if money is no issue (no pun intended!) , buying the mag off the racks for 4 dollars isn't that big of a deal....but a year-long subscription is $22, and if you buy off the newsstand for a year, you'll end up paying $44. For me, it's really just the principle, like valet parking....I refuse to let them sucker me into paying so much more for something I can get less expensively.
This is my 3rd year to subscribe, and the first issue of the year has ALWAYS been late. I always call, and they say they'll send another; then I end up with two in a few weeks. Anyway, it may have to do with how early someone subscribes before the year. Next year, I'll have to subscribe earlier and see what happens. It's annoying and it's wrong for CL to do it, but I don't plan to spend extra time or money worrying about it.

I know that there is a problem every month with people getting their issues late, etc. But I just cannot help thinking that this month it has something to do with the fact that it is a two month issue. Otherwise, I just cannot think of a reason that SO MANY people have yet to receive it. And if that is not the case, then CL is really alienating a lot of customers. And I would think that we bulletin board members are some of the most loyal customers. There must be tons of other subscribers who feel the same way we do every month as they see the mag in the store and still don't have their own copy.
I know that the CL administrators read this board, and I am surprised that no one from CL has responded in order to explain or at least apologize. Maybe it would help if they just posted about how the magazines are handled each month so that we at least understand the process. Are all mags mailed at the same time and the discrepancies in arrival times are due to the post office? Are the mags sent out in batches? What is it? I think all of us would appreciate some kind of reply from CL on this.
And, for the record, I don't want to sound angry at CL because I am not. I just want them to explain why this is happening. It seems that I am usually one of the first to get my issue each month, so I don't really have a personal stake in this debate. I just want to know how it works.

Just as an FYI----I have been paying $11.95/yr. for my subscription to Cooking Light, and have been subscribing for several years. I get my subscription through Delta Publishing, 1-800-728-3728.
From what I've been reading on this BB, I don't get my magazines any earlier or later than anyone else.
Maybe paying $11.95 instead of $22 can be a small comfort when the magazine arrives late.

I'm slowly becoming an angry customer...
My question re: magazine distribution is this... If I order TIME, it comes to my house every Monday right on time--never on any other day. Why can't this happen monthly (on whatever date they decide) for Cooking Light? Is this service a higher price than regular mail or something? I refuse to believe my postal carrier is just slow at distributing my mail....

Just wanted to let you all know that we ARE reading this post. I've put-off giving any explanations yet because, frankly, I haven't gotten one yet. As soon as I do, I will let you know. I PROMISE!
I do know that the issue went out a week later than usual because it is a combined issue. We normally consider an issue late if it doesn't arrive in the mailbox by the 7th of the month. Because this one is a week later, the 14th. But, it is the 16th of January and well, as a subscriber for many years, I expected it in my mailbox before newsstands. I'd like to add (though this won't make you feel any better) that the retailers are given a date when they are supposed to put the magazine on the newsstand and often, they don't always comply, and put the magazine out much earlier, therefore causing us all a little grief when strolling that aisle in the market...
As a big fan of our bulletin board and website users, it's been painful for me to read this post every day. I will do my best to get back to you all as soon as possible. In the mean time, we have posted several of the recipes from the mag throughout the website and I know our usual wonderful board users are almost always ready and willing to post a recipe when needed.
Thanks to all of you for your patience. you'll be hearing from me...

Okay. Here's what I've found out regarding late issues:
1. As was mentioned previously, this issue had a "mail to subscriber" deadline later than usual because it is a double issue. That deadline was January 6th. However, to put this in perspective, the Dec issue schedule calls for a last day of mailing of November 17. So, essentially, the Jan/Feb double issue had a
mailing deadline 20 days later than a normal single-issue month.
2. The normal allowance from mailing date to the time you receive it is 7 - 10 days. That would mean you all should have received your copies as late as the 16th.
3. Also, if the Jan/Feb issue just so happened to be either a.) your first issue in a new subscription or b.) the first issue you received after letting us know you want to renew your current subscription, then add another couple of days for attaching the invoice or renewal form and for bagging in plastic. (By the way, this holds true for all months, not just Jan/Feb.)
Here's the scoop on why you've seen the Jan/Feb CL on newsstands before your mailbox:
1. The "on sale" date for newsstands for the Jan/Feb issue was January 9th. (Just 3 days after the "mail to subscribers" date.) Whereas, in general, the single-issue months have about 11 days between the mail to and the on sale dates.
2. We are required to send the issues to the newsstand wholesalers more than a week ahead of issue date for their billing/accounting purposes. And, because of that, they have the issue earlier and, if they want to, they can put it on newsstand prior to the official on sale date even though we request them to
refrain from early release.
3. Combine these and you may very well have seen the issue on newsstand before you get it at home.
Hope this helps answer your questions. Who knows... maybe 12 issues next year to avoid this?????
Beth H

Maelynn: thank you for your responses to this thread. We really appreciate your input and the time you spent to find answers for us. I think that Cooking Light really needs to examine its methods of distributing the magazines, though, as it seems to be a widespread and constant problem. My CL is late at least a few times a year, and since it is a monthly topic on this board, it seems as though that is true for many readers. I have subscribed to "People" magazine for over 10 years, and never have had a late issue -- and that's a weekly.
So, thank you for addressing the problem of this issue and I hope that even greater powers-that-be are reading and contemplating what to do about the larger problem! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I finally received my issue on the 13th!!!!! I was getting pretty bummed http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif. Thanks for the answers, Maelynn. (I guess mine really wasn't late--would have liked to get it earlier though) Can't wait to start on this months recipes--certainly enjoy the reviews! Not to mention this entire board.

This must be exciting for you Lynn! My boyfriend was drooling over your chicken dish! We will definitely have to try this now!
Mine was in my mailbox today...
I just got off the phone with customer service and they are sending another copy out. I am really peeved with CL and their not putting in a voice at our complaints. Last week, I sent an e-mail and have not seen a response.
Cooking Light, if you're reading this, I am annoyed. I just renewed my subscription a few months ago. I don't know if I like the magazine enough to put up with this kind of service. I'll decide over the next coming months if I will renew again.

Still no magazine in St. Thomas. It's not on the stands either. Of course down here 3rd class mail means the slow boat from Miami so we get used to it. So long as I get my magazine every month I don't care when it arrives. Most of my magazines arrive late.

Mine was in the mailbox yesterday too. I commented earlier that I had gotten a late notice for a renewal I made back in November but had never gotten the first bill. Guess what was with my LATE magazine...the original bill dated November 22!!!! Go figure!!!

I just got mine today, too.
Maelynn, thanks for responding. I hope that everyone that's still waiting gets theirs soon (including you! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif)
As someone said before on this board, this just gives me the opportunity to try some of the things in other issues I hadn't tried yet.

Still waiting in SC! I usually receive my copy much earlier in the month, so am very disappointed.
