I went on South Beach a few months ago and am thrilled to say IT'S WORKING. I'm in jeans that are at least five years old. If I lose enough weight I'll have a whole "new" wardrobe made up of "old" clothing I had just about given up on.

South Beach is great because the proteins are lean and it doesn't villify all carbs, lumping them into one "bad" category. The vitamin packed ones are incorporated generously into the diet once the two week "detox" is over.

South Beach advises low fat cheese snacks during the day. Here's the thing. I would NEVER eat that much cheese in my life as is prescribed in Phase I (the detox). It sort of...gums up the works if you know what I mean - but I found a solution that serves two purposes.

Every morning I have a yogurt and bran shake. Cottage cheese works well in the shake, too. Unprocessed bran is dirt cheap from health food stores and you get a whole sack for about $2. The yogurt or cottage cheese provides pre-workout protein and I noticed my workouts feel a lot more effective since I made it a point to have protein about 45 minutes before the gym. (Not easy since my class is 6:15 A.M.) This is pretty quick but the blendor can be loud ...especially at 5:30 a.m. ;)

1 cup non-fat plain yogurt or small curd cottage cheese
1/2 envelope of Splenda sweetener
1/2 tsp. of pure vanilla
1/3-1/2 cup ice
2-3 tblsp. unprocessed bran

Blend till smooth.

You could also substitute flaxseed meal for the bran. I haven't tried it in a shake but I have been adding to my cottage cheese most mornings for breakfast. Flaxseed has 0 net carbs (4 carbs, 4 fiber per 2 tbsp serving) and has lots of healthy things in it.
