I'm considering buying some (or maybe just one) old CL Annuals on Ebay and wanted to know which year you dedicated readers would most recommend. I know that when I was little my mom had all the Southern Living Annual Cookbooks but you could definitely tell which was her favorite...it was much more worn than the others! Do you guys have a CL book that looks like that? I've looked at the 5 Star and Complete Books, but I can find the old Annuals much cheaper. It may be important that my husband and I don't eat meat at home so they recipes have to be vegetarian or convertible with Veggie crumbles for ground beef/meat or possibly tofu for chicken.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not going to be very helpful here because I have only subscribed since Oct. 99 so, keep that in mind!

I seem to remember other, more long-term subscribers saying they thought the magazine's recipes have improved a great deal in recent years. So, maybe you should purchase some of the newer annuals.

I doubt this is helpful but I just wanted you to have some sort of reply! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

You might try searching old posts with subject like "favorite Cl recipes"or something like that.

For me, 1998 was a great year. My magazines from that year are definitely the most worn. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I found/use a lot of recipes out of the 1996 cookbook more than the '97 I have...

1996 was an interesting book. After 1996 CL annual carried ALL the recipes of the year but in 96 it was divided (& before) by categories and menus for different holidays (Valentines etc)
1997 was one of the ones I used most because of upside down cakes, tomato sauces, salad dressings, cookies, chutney and strata.
1998 Had great dips, banana recipes and good cake recipes.

I have about 10 Cooking Light Cookbooks total.(including about 4-5 annuals) If I were to choose one book, my favorite is the Complete and I'd choose it over the annuals. The 5-star is also excellent which I would also choose over the annuals.

I agree with Sherry, '98 (99 annual)is my favorite. That was the year that I decided to subscribe. How about that one cake with the coconut frosting--all the cakes from March for that matter. How about the Lemon-Garlic chicken and wasn't the Two-Cheese scalloped potatoes from November of that year?Too many to mention!!!--Lisa
