View Full Version : Another caesar salad dressing question...
I saw the thread about the "best" caesar salad dressing. I have a question about caesar dressings: when the recipe calls for "fat-free mayo", what do you all use?
The only fat-free mayo-like substance I can find is fat-free Miracle Whip, and I didn't like the caesar dressing made with that--it was too sweet or something.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I use Hellmann's (in the west known as Best Foods) Low Fat (94% Fat Free) salad dressing. I don't use Miracle Whip, because like you found it tastes sweeter/tangier than mayo would. About the only thing I use Miracle Whip for is sandwich "salads" - like chicken/turkey salad - because I think mayo is a little too bland.

I use Hellmans low fat as well-the one with the light blue label. There's one that has a green label, too. We don't like that one. (I think one says lowfat and the other says reduced fat.) I really don't care for the fat free products at all.

I only by Hellman's Light. It's not fat-free, but I swear you don't notice that it's light.

Kraft Fat Free mayo, when mixed in to a recipe (like the cole slaw recipe or the creamy caesar dressing recipe) is completely indistinguishable from the real stuff. I agree that all by itself it does taste different (although I like it and use it exclusively), but really, when it's mixed in, I guarantee you can't tell. I serve it to "regular mayo only" people ALL the time, and everyone raves about anything I make with it. Just ask the people on this board about "my" coleslaw recipe...they'll all vouch for it! I say buy the small jar (8 oz.), and try it....

I exclusively use Duke's Light (a reduced fat mayo). I can never tell the difference between that and the real stuff when used in dishes or on sandwiches. I am not sure, but I think Duke's may just be a Southern thing. I checked the label, and it is made in VA. Anyway, if you can find it, I highly recommend it.

Hellman's Light, the one in the pale blue jar is great! I cannot tell the difference between it and real mayonnaise--I think it tastes better than whole fat. The one in the green jar (98% fat free) tastes nasty, almost like it has cellulose in it. I haven't tried the Kraft fat free--I don't think they stock it at my grocery store.

Venus, I totally agree- the green label Hellman's is horrible! It is the light that I buy ( the light blue label) , not the reduced fat.

I use Kraft's Fat Free, and I can barely taste the difference! When mixed with other ingredients, like curry for my favourite chicken salad, you can't tell it's fat free at all!
