Okay, its my night for silly polls....
How do you feel about dipping pizza into ranch dressing? Is this strictly California again?

Ranch dressing is the perfect condiment, IMHO.

I might try dipping the crusts. I've dipped them in all sorts of things before.

Never have, but might try.
I guess I'm thinking all that cheese and meat toppings...the odds of my needing EXTRA calories for a pizza are slim :D ;)

Papa John's in Texas (when I was there) used to automatically include a thing of ranch dressing and a thing of melted butter and a couple of jalapenos.
Yum.

Ooooh, their garlic butter sauce is divine, too.

I voter O.O.
I used to do this. I thought it was an Oklahoma thing! I don't to it often anymore.
I do like tater tots dipped in ranch though. :D

I do not dip pizza crust into any kind of sauce. :D
#1 - As Ana said, most pizza has PLENTY of calories, no need to add more.
#2 - If it's good pizza and good crust, it doesn't NEED to be dipped.
:D

I'm from California, and I've never heard of dipping pizza into ranch dressing. As for how I feel about it--well, I love pizza way more than I like ranch dressing, so I think dipping it into the dressing would make the pizza less good than it started out. Maybe not bad, but not an improvement.

I am also from California and we used to do this all the time when I was in college. We always asked for a side of Ranch dressing when we ordered a pizza and then we'd dip away!:o I must add that I haven't done this since then!! Must have been strictly a "college" thing.

Peggy, you nearly made a liar of me! ;)
I was going to say that I'd only recently heard of this, that it is not tied to geography, but *age*! I thought this was strictly a (coast-to-coast) under-20something notion! Guess not.....
A couple of years ago I ordered onion rings in a small, local chain and was given the choice of ketchup or ranch dressing. I couldn't believe it! I thought onion rings came with tartar sauce?? <I'm getting so ooooold>. I think ranch dressing on pizza sounds like flavor and fat overload of things that don't go together...but the trend is much more toward intensity of flavor (e.g., "super sour" "double ranch flavor" "mega-malt") than quality of ingredients. It's just how things change over time...

Tartar sauce? Onion rings? Ewwww! ;)
I remember my friend teaching me about ranch dressing and pizza when I was still in middle school. :) I don't do it often, but would I? Absolutely.

OK, whipper-snapper!! Enough of your heckling!! ;)
Now, let me ask you what flavor of potato chips is favored by you and your friends??? Sour cream and onion was pretty much the preferred flavor of my day, but they're getting harder to find...apparently malt vinegar, sea salt, and other "intense" flavors are the order of the day. Gee, anyone remember barbecued corn chips -- "whampum"???

Italian here, too.
(dipping in ranch is my guilty pleasure - I voted yes:D) After all, it's not like there's really great pizza available here in Michigan, so I'm not ruining a culinary treat (sorry Pizza Hut!).:)

I've never done it, but I'd try it. I've has a southwest pizza which was served with ranch on it. I don't think I'd enjoy it or make a habit of it, I get in plenty of calories w/o adding to it.
Oh and Canice I've never heard of tartar sauce with onion rings either. I eat them w/ s&p only.

Ah yes, that is what I was driving at. It's okay to dip Pizza Hut and all those chain pizzas because they are not really pizza. ;)
Yes, I'm just being a pizza snob here. Growing up in New York, where back when nary a pizza chain was to be found, will do that to ya. Unfortunately I now live in IN where the pizza pickin's are few and far between. No offense at all intended to any pizza chain lovers. :D

Have never dipped in ranch. I guess I'd try once.
There is a chain here called Monical's (I just know I spelled that wrong) and my sister used to order a cheese pizza and a soft drink cup filled with french dressing from them once a week.
In high school a friend used to get a slice of cheese pizza (they served it every day) and she would mix together mayo and ketchup on her tray, pull the layer of cheese off the crust, roll it into a cylinder and dip into the pink mixture.
When we order pizza(Papa John's) I get a small veggie made without sauce and then dip it into the cheese, garlic butter , or marinara sauce that comes with the kid's order of breadstix.

No. Never. Ever. Not in this lifetime.
I have no fondness for pizzas with dips or new-fangled toppings -- like Alysha, I grew up in New York and am a pizza snob. (It's taken me nearly 3 years to learn to tolerate Boston pizza).
Actually, I never even heard of dipping a pizza in ranch dressing, or anything else, for that matter. I'm guessing this trend hasn't reached the Northeast? :)

And all this time I thought it was Fresno thing. (The most popular local chain here pretty much gives it out with all their pizzas.) I had never heard of it in Southern California but here it's the norm. (And I voted yes, 'cuz if I'm going to be eating that many calories I may as well just go all the way. :D )

When I was a kid, long before the advent of ranch dressing (OMG, how long ago was that???), we used creamy Italian dressing to dip our pizza in. (This was out in the sticks in Texas.) When ranch dressing became widely known and available, all bets were off! My kids sometimes refuse to eat pizza, even tho they could eat the stuff 3 times a day, if we're out of ranch. We use so much of it (on other things like steamed broccoli and baked potatoes) that I think we single-handedly keep Kraft in business. I don't care for Hidden Valley--too vinegary.
IMO, pizza is bread with lots of condiments already. I 'm also not that big on ranch dressing or other creamy dressings either. Occassionaly some raw veggies, or a little lowfat version when that's the best lowfat dressing choice -- but I can't imagine it with pizza.
We have asked Pappa John's to leave the dressing and garlic butter out of our pizza boxes since we never use them, but we still get the garlic spread everytime.

I've never done the ranch thing but in college we used to dip it into blue cheese dressing!:D

I'm with you, Helene.
Pizza purity.
Never heard of dipping pizza, either -- but, then again, the Boston area is not known for being on the forefront of fads or fashions

In college we used to get a pizza called a "wildebeast" which was really just a sauceless garlic pie (crust, cheese, garlic). It always came with ranch dressing and I ate it that way and liked it.
In Colorado there is a pizza place called Beaujo's (I think that's the name) and they served honey for you to dip your pizza crusts in- that was kind of interesting.
Otherwise, I don't dip my pizza.

Me neither - although "not a Ranch person" does not adequately describe how repulsive I find Ranch dressing.
I have nothing against dipping pizza crust, although I haven't eaten pizza in years. Speaking of Papa John's, however, we always got the garlic butter and jalapeņos, and some extra pizza sauce too, but never Ranch dressing. Yuck.

I think you live in a strange part of California!! (although I know Danville isn't strange) I was in the Bay Area for 8 years and that's how I got onto my healthy, fresh food addiction. I would think that mayo and Ranch dressing are the antithesis (sp?) of California cuisine.
When I lived in Colorado, there were a few places that served honey with pizza. They had thin crust pizza, but the crust edges were big and puffy. After you finished the "filling" part of the pizza, you ate the edges with a little honey. Sounds strange, but is awesome. Kind of like having dessert. (oops - I just read Gertdog's thread! Beaujo's is exactly the place I had in mind!)

I voyed no and as a native Californian, have never heard of it. I'm of the school that pizza has enough good and fattening things on it that it does not need Ranch dressing too.

Also not a dipper and I love Ranch dressing, especially when it's made with buttermilk. I do like dippinf french fries in tartar sauce but never gave it a thought to onion rings, sounds interesting!

I generally don't anymore, but I have in the past. I always thought it was a "college" thing.
Where I went to college, there was a popular pizza chain called Double Dave's that had great pepperoni rolls. Not like the kind you buy in the freezer section of the grocery store, but these big rolls of chewy doughy pizza crust with pepperoni and cheese rolled up inside. :o Ranch is the perfect accompaniment for those. And lucky for us, Double Dave's has made its way to Austin. :D

OMG! I could just about dip anything in Ranch. I love cheap pizza dipped in ranch, but it makes me feel way to guilty, so I don't do it anymore.
I am REALLY embarrased to admit this, but when I was at parties as a teen, I used to dip everything in ranch. I've even dipped chocolate chip cookies in ranch. :o :o :o (And I don't drink, so I can't even use that as an excuse.)
I'm a native Californian and always thought it was a kid thing since my son does it. Doesn't appeal to me. (I'd be more inclined to use my crust to mop up a really good oil and vinegar based Italian dressing.)
On that basis, I voted "no." Then I remembered pesto chips.
There's a place in Tahoe (Tahoe Pizza Company) which serves an appetizer sort of pizza, which is small, crunchy-crusted and smeared with pesto and a sprinkle of parmesan. That's served with ranch dressing for dipping and with that, yes, I do dip in ranch dressing.
I have just invalidated the accuracy of your poll. Oops. :o

It's strange that you posted this poll. We ordered pizza when my family dropped me off after my vacation two weeks ago. My brother in law asked if I had any ranch dressing. I was really repulsed since dipping pizza was foreign to me.
I didn't have ranch, so he dipped in Blue Cheese dressing, instead.
I didn't try it. I don't think that pizza needs anything else.

I have definitely dipped the crusts in Ranch dressing. We used to have a restaurant that had wonderful homemade dressings on the salad bar. I always would get a little extra dressing just for the crusts.

Never heard of it and wouldn't try it. I'm a pizza purist - it drives my chef friend nuts when I put tomato slices on white pizza...

I would and I have dipped my pizza in ranch dressing. Usually it was just the crust and I don't really do it anymore. I think that it was more of a high school/college thing. But there are lots of other things that I like to dip in ranch dressing...fried cheese balls, french fries, cheeseburgers...and I know there are more. It's a good thing that I don't eat these foods everyday! ;) :D

I often think the crust is the best part of the pizza and since I love bread I wouldn't despoil it by dipping it in anything.

Since I order pizza only a couple of times a year (therefore, I want unadulterated pizza!), and also since I've never found a good lowfat ranch dressing anyway, I had to vote no. The purist (and Italian) in me only allows for tomato sauce!!
