It's Friday, which means a new VRB thread. But, most importantly, we will all be thinking of you, Laura, as you tackle your 1/2 marathon this weekend in Boulder!! It's finally here! How exciting. Hope your tapering week went well. Good luck with the shoes. Hope you're enjoying your carbo-loading. Get lots of sleep. Don't change your schedule or running habits. And GOOD LUCK! If you can, give us a URL for your race so we can learn more about it.
P.S. Great tempo run for me yesterday. I haven't felt this much 'in the groove' on a tempo run in a while. Laura's race karma must be rubbing off. Today is a nice slow recovery day. We've got crisp, Autumn weather so I'm really looking forward to it.
Laura

Thanks Susan, I am so in debt to all of you for the advice and encouragment you have given me over the past 7 months. I am always referring to you all as my running friends, and my running partner, didn't know until just recently that you are all my email buddies, and not people I have known for years.
The address for the race is www.boulderbackroads.com
I don't think they have any online tracking of runners, but my bib number is 2093.
Have a great weekend everyone!

All right, Laura! I'll think swift thoughts for you!
I ran 3 miles this morning, which was 2 miles short of my normal route. But I wasn't feeling inspired.
Tomorrow is 12 miles.

First... GO LAURA - Swift thoughts headed your way!!!
Ran a "short notice" half-marathon today, I just signed up for it on Tuesday and had a good race. I actually cut about 4 minutes off my Rock 'n Roll half time. I think I'm right on track for Richmond too - finished in 1:34:26 and I was targeting for 1:35. Woo Hoo! I can feel those last 10 seconds fall from my marathon time in November. The race was a little race on the banks of the James River near Williamsburg. It was a doubly neat race because I got hooked up with a guy (never met him before today) who was looking to do well and was shooting for a time that would tell him if he could run the Marine Corps Marathon in about 3:30. He was right with me from mile 8 to the finish and I told him that the pace he was running should be good enough to beat his 3:30 goal. He thanked me and it felt so good. Brings back my faith in human nature really.
Susan - Glad you had a good tempo run. Nice to hear that people are doing well.
Scout - :( Sorry to hear about the flat run. Hopefully you will come back from it. BTW, which race are you training for?
I'll be looking up Laura in a minute... hopefully they've run but you never know.
Peace,
Les

First of all ...
Let's go, Laura - let's go!!!! *clap clap* [to be chanted using the music they use in hockey games]
Hi all! Laura, I hope all goes well for you tomorrow morning. Can't wait for the update! :)
I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far. Scout, I hope your next run is more fun. Susan, that's great that you're having some good runs. Hi, Michelle -- how're you, and how's Sierra now? Les, good going on today's run and that's a nice story about the guy you met up with. I have met up with some very nice people while running and it can be a great feeling (plus it can make the miles go by sooo much faster!) :D
Oh, and I have to go back and read last week's thread later so if I've missed answering anything or am asking questions that have already been answered, I apologize. ;)
I got back from my business trip yesterday. Had a super productive meeting and also enjoyed a few crisp but pretty fall days in gorgeous Ottawa, our capital. I used to live there so it's especially nice to go back. Got in a couple of good workouts, too: one long one, and one shorter run. Got in another run late this afternoon, and that was good too. Now to put my feet up and enjoy being back home!
Take care, all.
Natasha
Hi, gang!
I feel like it's been ages since I posted on this thread. The entire month of September seems to have gotten away from me somehow. I've been working like a fiend and had family commitments coming out the wa-zoo, so I've barely had a time to read through the threads, let alone post -- but I have been running every other day (and walking or biking on my off days).
Everyone's doing great, it seems -- and I can't wait to hear about your half-marathon, Laura!!
I promise to not be such a stranger in October...

I tell you I think it was helpful to both of us to run together - helped him make a time that he was capable of and helped me keep plugging at the pace I knew I needed to run. It's funny how true it is that running past someone (even for a very short distance) gives you energy.

Ah - the grand and glorious mountains in the early fall. It's probably a little cool for my blood but how I appreciate the mountains in the fall - even if all the leaves have fallen. Were there leaves still on the trees? We still have a few but most have been blown off by Isabel two weeks ago.
Peace to all and GO LAURA!! (just once more today)

Well, I just checked the Boulder Backroads site and it says that results will be available in the evening, so I'll have to check back (unless, of course, we hear from Laura herself by then!). :) I hope all went well this morning.
Hi, Jodi! Good to hear from you again, and that's great that you've been staying active despite all the other demands placed on your time! Looking forward to seeing more of you around here in October.

How true! Amazing, isn't it.

The leaves were all on the trees and only a few were starting to turn colour. Within the next week or 10 days they will likely experience a lot of colour change, and around where I live, Thanksgiving (our Thanksgiving, the second Monday in October) is about prime colour time. I think you would have found the temperatures okay -- it was about 68F in the daytime, and a fair bit cooler at night, but still good running temperature (except for the day it rained a lot). Have you ever been to Ottawa/Gatineau? Lovely area with tons of parks and running and biking trails -- much recommended!
Well, I'm off to make spiced apple muffins. I have squash and garlic in the oven and am going to make more roasted garlic and squash bisque today. Good ol' harvest cooking and baking! Later in the afternoon we plan to go for a hike in a local conservation area and then chow down. :D

Hi everyone, thanks for all your swift thoughts they helped. I finished in 2:14:59 (by my watch when I went under the start banner) and 2:18:47 by their clock. In either case I beat my time goal so I was very happy. The weather was gorgeous about 50 when we started and warmed up to the low 60s at the end. Very little wind, just a perfect day. Plus, I ran the whole way (except for the water breaks that usually only lasted about 20 seconds). It got a little tough around mile 10, but all in all, it was a good race. Thanks again for all your encouragement.
Les, I read about your race!! Way to go. I will check back tomorrow. Laura

LAURA, WOO HOO! CONGRATULATIONS!!
And on that note I confess that I was in Vegas all weekend where I planned to get my runs in (I did, I really did  ), but those rooms are SO comfortable and you can't even tell its morning until you open the drapes.....
Well, let's just say I probably need to make up those miles somehow this week (nah.... I think I'll just let it slide for once:D )

[SIZE=4][COLOR=deeppink]WAY TO GO LAURA!!!![SIZE=4]
[SIZE=1]Mary good for you, there is nothing wrong with just enjoying the comforts of a hotel and you know you will make up for it whenever. That is my personnel philosophy. If I miss a run then I don't beat myself up over it.
I went for a hike today to the waterfront it was a gorgeous day here.:D Anyhow, Sierra is doing much better she is off her IV and is able to actually go for a good hour walk. Thanks for asking Natasha. I gave up my run tonight to do that instead and enjoyed every minute of it.
This is from a couple of threads ago, but Susan how did you like running in the arboretum here. I was still in Tennessee at the time otherwise I would have tried to meet up with you for a run. I may have slowed you down though.
Well gang hopefully all your weekends went well, talk to you all soon,

Sad to say - the only place that I've ever been in Canada was Victoria (and the surrounding area). Don't get me wrong it was fabulous there, especially at Bouchard Gardens but I've never been to central Canada. Maybe as a retirement gift in a couple years. There are a few things I'll miss this year including the changing colours of the leaves - most of ours fell off when Isabel came through.

That sounds great. Can I get the recipe for the soup? I'm nuts about garlic and squash and garlic bisque sound just heavenly. PM if you'd like.
Looking forward to a step back week this week. 12 miler as a long run and only 3 7-8 milers during mid-week. This is my speed week: 7x800m intervals (6:36 pace).
Jodi - good to see you back and we hope to see more of you in th future. Ditto for Michelle.

Congratulations to Les and Laura on your races!
I'm patting myself on the back as I stayed at a friend's house Sat. night, was up until 2 am, up at 7 and I was supposed to do a 7 mile run on Sunday---I hadn't measured any distance out, but got up, and got out there and when I measured the distance later it was 6.2, so I felt very virtuous.
I went antiquing after and found a couple of old books to add to my (not valuable, just fun) collection of children's books and classic adult novels. All in all, a very nice weekend. (Can you tell I was away from my kids?...LOL)
Kristi
I'd like the bisque recipe too please!
Natasha
09-29-2003, 08:46 AM
Congrats, Laura!!!! :) You must feel so proud. You deserve to!
More later, but for now, here is the bisque recipe from Bon Appetit, with my notes:
The soup is from Bon Appetit (a couple of years ago). We did make a few changes to the recipe: we roasted the squash first, and then cooked it for less time on the stovetop accordingly. (Our squash was more like 3 pounds instead of 4, so I decreased the other ingredients accordingly, except for the garlic.) We used less than a tbsp of butter to cook the onions et al., instead of the 1/4 cup indicated in the recipe. We omitted the sage, and just served it with salt and lots of freshly-ground pepper. Lastly, we subbed 10% cream for the whipping cream. It had such a smooth texture, and was infused with the perfect amount of garlic flavour. (The second time we made it, I skipped the carrots and added zucchini instead, since it was what I had on hand. The green flecks weren't the most aesthetically-pleasing thing, but the soup still tasted great.) While it is a hearty soup, there is no way it makes 12 servings!! ;)
There are also a bunch of reviews on epicurious.com with substitution ideas and so on. Someone said that milk worked fine in place of the cream, but I didn't want to try it. It probably would still be good, though!
Here is the recipe, from Epicurious:
BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND ROASTED-GARLIC BISQUE
2 heads of garlic, halved crosswise
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
3 cups chopped onions
3/4 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped celery
4 pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded, cut into 1-inch pieces
6 cups canned low-salt chicken broth
3 tablespoons chopped fresh sage
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon whipping cream
Preheat oven to 350°F. Rub cut surfaces of garlic with oil. Put halves back together to reassemble heads. Wrap each tightly in foil; bake until tender, about 40 minutes. Cool garlic in foil.
Melt butter in heavy large pot over medium heat. Add onions, carrots and celery; sauté until onions are beginning to soften, about 5 minutes. Add squash, broth and 2 tablespoons sage. Bring to boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered until squash is tender, about 25 minutes.
Meanwhile, unwrap garlic. Squeeze from skin into small bowl. Discard skin. Mash garlic with fork until smooth.
Stir garlic into soup. Working in batches, purée soup in blender until smooth. Return to pot. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Refrigerate uncovered until cold. Cover and keep refrigerated. Bring to simmer before continuing.) Stir in 1/2 cup cream. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer soup to tureen. Drizzle with remaining 1 tablespoon cream.
Sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon sage.
Makes 12 servings.
Bon Appétit

I got in 6 this morning (which was supposed to be an off day, but that's only if you do the two runs on the weekend like you're supposed to  :D ). I've decided to alter the schedule a bit in that it calls for 5 days of training per week but I'm finding that it may be a little much so I've decided that instead of T,W,Th and Sat, Sun I'm going to drop the Wednesday run and see what happens. I have just been feeling really spent by Thursdays on this plan and think the rest is as inmportant as the runs themselves. I'll still have a speed day and a long distance day each week so hopefully all will go well. Now, I need to go get some butternut squash because that soup sounds really good!!!!!! :D

Natasha - Merci beaucoup, mille fois. I hope my 5 years of French in High school and college didn't just fail me. The soup really sounds yummy.
Mary H - Take care of yourself. Better to take a XT or non-running day than do the "schedule" and risk hurting something. Believe me - I know from experience.
Today's 7 x 800m intervals went very well. It really feels like I'm peaking at about the right time for Nov 15th. Was spent but not exhausted after finishing the intervals. Maybe there's hope for me yet.
One more time - congratulations Laura!!

NATASHA - had a question for you from last week (since you asked for the reminder ;-)...have you by chance ever run the Vancouver International Marathon? Long shot, I know, as it's not like it's in your back yard. I'm thinking of doing the 1/2 next year. The race is in April, though. Afraid it will be cold & wet. Any opinions??
MARY - agree w/Les on your rest day. Also, make sure you are alternating hard day/easy day in your workouts. You really should feel exhausted by Thursday. Slow, easy days are really supposed to be just that. I find it hard to make myself go as slow as you should, but am currently working on that. It feels like you're not working hard enough, but there's actually a purpose for going slow and it really does make you faster & stronger in the long run.
RACE QUESTION - Is anyone doing the Jingle Bell run this fall/winter? This is an annual run for the Arthritis Foundation that is held in lots & lots of cities around the country. Ours will be on Dec 13. It would be really fun if everyone in VRB ran the same race! It wouldn't be simultaneous, but pretty close I think (within a month of each other). Let me know if there will be a Jingle Bell run in your respective cities. I haven't looked into it yet, but the Arthritis Foundation website might list the locations, or check your local running store.

:D I was just thinking, hmmmmmmm?? :D
That's what I figure. By tweaking this, the plan is:
Tuesdays - usually hills or mile repeats at fast pace
Wednesday - off (I cross train with weights at the gym)
Thursday - medium length run but at slower pace
Friday - off (again in gym for strength training)
Sat - medium length run
Sun - long slow run
Monday - off (in gym)
and then start over again. (The original plan had another run thrown in there on Wednesdays.)
But what I really want to know is more about Vancouver. I want to do the 1/2. Natasha, any info or experience with this??

Well I got out for a short run yesterday and it was wonderful, I slacked off there for a bit but am making myself get back on the wagon. I knocked off a bit of time on how fast I run a mile so I was all proud of myself yesterday. The last couple of days have been like summer all over again which has been a nice treat.

Had to share, had way to much energy tonight as I was all pumped up to go to work and ended up they didn't need me so went for a short run but pushed myself to run at a fast pace. Which I don't normally do, I didn't quite sprint but was a faster pace than I normally do and wow did it ever feel good. So thought I would just tell you all and now for some unwinding time. I had to run off some caffeine as I was supposed to do a night shift so I really needed to tire myself out a bit so I can actually sleep tonight, hahaha:D

Hope that your fast paced run helps you sleep. Must be hard getting pumped up to work at the hospital to have them not need you. I guess that running would be the first thing that I'd turn to when my energy outlet was "turned off".
Had a good recovery run today - 5 (ok 5++, almost 7 1/4) in glorious conditions. It was warm enough to go out in singlet and shorts but cool enough to not be swimming in sweat by the end of the hour. As a friend said yesterday - stick a fork in summer, it's done.
Tomorrow will be fun. A good run, 45-55 minutes tempo run, and a good surprise for LW - our 20th anniversary. Her present will be waiting for her when she gets up - a plush moose (not asked for) wearing diamond stud earrings (the only thing she asked for).
Peace and happy trails,
Les

Michelle - he, he. You must have gotten people mixed up. I haven't been to Seattle in about 8 years :-) Was someone in our group visiting there to run the Arboretum?? I've forgotten. I ran in my own Arboretum, though, and it was quite enjoyable :-).

Uggghhh. I got socked with a cold in the middle of the night. It really caught me by surprise in terms of how I was feeling yesterday. I was planning on running 3 today, but I might just go for a walk instead.
I had hoped San Diego R&R marathon had a 1/2 with it as well, but it doesn't look like it. Right now I think I will do the Phoenix rock and roll in January 2005, :D :p, nothing like giving me a little time to prepare. There are some other races I might consider, but nothing is jumping out at me right now. I have also heard great things about the covered bridges 1/2 in Vermont (I think) but I am sure it is closed for next year's race. If any of you know of some fun races in late Spring/early summer let me know.

Sorry :( to hear about the cold. I'm not that surprised though a lot of folks get sick after a long race, especially their first 1/2 or full marathon. Hopefully you bounce back quickly. Okay to "just walk" anyway.
Getting ready for 55 minutes of tempo running - should be a blast.

Uh, well let's see the San Diego half marathon is January 2004. :D :D But I saw you wrote 2005. It's in Carlsbad (which is not technically SD but hey it's SD County and the weather's the same.) I am seriously considering that one if I make it through the next four weeks.

Susan and Mary, sorry for the delay. I haven't done the Vancouver event but know people who have and they enjoyed it. It may well be rainy but it should be good running weather, really -- coolish and refreshing. Hey -- maybe I can meet you guys there! :D I wouldn't mind doing that race either.
Mary, you made me laugh with your comment about the comfy hotel bed. In Ottawa I stayed at the Westin, and the beds there are sooo comfortable (even trademarked as the "Heavenly Bed"). Believe me, it was hard to get up in the mornings, especially with the heavy drapes closed! So I hear ya!
Michelle, great to hear that Sierra is feeling well enough to be taken off her IV, and to get some exercise!! :) Whoo hoo!!
Les and LW, HAPPY 20th ANNIVERSARY!!! I think the moose with the earrings is an inspired (and cute) gift. I'm sure your wife loved it.
Laura, sorry to hear that you're sick, but better this week than next, right? As Les said, it's quite common to get sick after finishing a big event. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.
Well, I've had a pretty active week so far. Great run on Monday, good walk and weights and such yesterday, and hopefully a run today. We also went for a night hike on Sunday and that was such fun. It was deserted and pitch dark and somewhat swampy -- basically, you had to step around these huge puddles and little ponds -- and with the trees and the water and the solitude, it felt kind of Lord of the Rings-like. I half expected Gollum to pop up from one of the ponds. :p On Saturday I had another run. So no complaints! :)

Covered Bridges is in early June next year and it is not open to registrants yet. I believe they are opening it up in Dec. It literally fills within a week, but you can get in if you get right on it. Check the site the start of every month and you can't go wrong.

Wow! we've progressed onto the second page - it's been a long time.
Natasha - LW was tickled with the moose/earrings and fully surprised by the 1/2 dozen roses waiting for her at work when she showed up this afternoon.
Today's run was a good one - pulled off about 57-58 minutes of tempo run peaking at about 6:55 pace. Pretty whipped but feeling better for having done the run.
Happy trails to all,

Yep! Plush is always good, especially cute cuddly moose. And sparkles don't hurt the cause either.
Today's 6 miles at race pace was pretty tough. Of course I completed the tempo run less than 17 hours before starting my run today (was that dumb or what??). In all as long as I didn't do anything too terribly bad to my ankle (left one is starting to act funny) I think it served its purpose.
On a different tack - does anyone have any experience with alternate lacing of shoes? My right shoe is inflaming the top of my foot making it painful after the run. I'll be okay but I'd like to see if I can mitigate the damage to my foot while I continue training (if that is possible).
Have a good Thursday and I'll be back at it later.
Les

10-02-2003, 02:50 PM
Hi Les,
Yes, I do have experience with alternate lacing. For a couple of years I used a funny method supposedly recommended by the Kiwi Arthur Lydiard. You know, I can't remember what exactly I did -- I think part of it involved skipping holes, because my shoes were too tight (especially my right shoe, as my right foot is almost a half size bigger than my left foot!). My right foot had been feeling kind of like what you described before I adopted this method. Anyway, at some point when I got a new pair of shoes I stopped doing that, and haven't needed to since (probably I've had 3 pairs of shoes since). But it was effective for me at the time. I got the idea from Runner's World.
I thought I had seen a number of diagrams with various ways to lace up your shoes for different reasons, but I'm looking through my running library and haven't seen anything so far. I'll let you know if I do find anything, or maybe one of the others will be able to help more than I can. Good luck and hey - at least you got in that 6-miler! I'm debating whether to head out for a run now or a bit later.

You know, I can't remember what exactly I did -- I think part of it involved skipping holes, because my shoes were too tight (especially my right shoe, as my right foot is almost a half size bigger than my left foot!). My right foot had been feeling kind of like what you described before I adopted this method. Thanks for the feedback. I've heard of lots of different ways to lace but haven't really known anyone that used one. I'll go to Runner's World and see what they have there. Should have thought of that myself.
Happy trails,
Les

Hey Les, although I have never used them, Galloway's Book of Running has 5 different ways of Lacing, on p. 250, if you want to PM me, I can fax the page to you.
