I noticed this in the bookstore the ther day. Though it is not visually exciting it looks like a good basic cookbook. It has 169 reviews at Amazon and most are very positive.
Any opinions on this book or others in the series?

Hi MO!!!

Glad to see you around too. As far as this book goes, I think it is a compilation of recipes from their magazine over the years (although I could be wrong about that). If it is, I would say it's probably great, even though it may not be a beautiful book to look at (the magazine isn't either - no color photos, etc). But the quality of the recipes is great. I just made their recommended way of making applesauce today (for the 2nd time) and it's fabulous. They go to such lengths to try every possible variable.

Let us know if you get it and if you try anything.

I have the cookbook...I haven't tried that many of the recipes, but the ones I've tried have all been fabulous (mostly the cookie recipes). I know someone else who has had the book for quite some time, and always raves about it.

I may just get this book!
I have another Japanese student coming-this time a girl and for five weeks! On her form she said she would like to learn "Canadian Cooking"! This looks like a book we could study together.

I hope she is willing to teach me some Japanese dishes-it is a cuisine that intimidates me!:o

Cookies are good!;)

I have this cookbook too!

I like it when I'm preparing a dish that I'm not familiar with. The recipes go into exhaustive detail about how they developed the recipe they end up with, so you can see how and why they make their selections. All the detail is kinda tedious, if all you want is a recipe, but is handy when I need to make a substitution of some sort, so I can adjust the dish without destroying it.

I have this cookbook and it is wonderful! Every recipe that I've tried from it has been great. Besides the recipes, I love reading about how they developed and tested each recipe. It has lots of basics that I refer back to all of the time. I also really like the vegetables section. For example, it tells you the best ways to cook cauliflower, then it gives 4 or 5 recipes for cauliflower, like Cauliflower with Indian flavors, or Asian-Braised Cauliflower.

I haven't made a lot from the Best Recipe, but what I have made has turned out great. Thanks to this book, I can now make meringue for my lemon meringue pies and the bread and muffin recipes are delicious too!!!

When someone posted a thread recently about favorite cookbooks, this is the one that I thought about putting on the list. I love it when I need a basic recipe for something. My favorite chocolate chip cookie and chicken soup recipes are both from this book. I like the fact that they give a lot of explanations, and that there are usually several variations for each recipe.
