Calling all wino's or wino wannabe's...
I''m trying to learn more about wines and thought it might be fun to start our own online wine tasting group. We could pick a specific wine for a week and then everyone post their comments on the wine. I have been reading books and online info, but a lot of them use rare wines or hard to locate vintages. It would be fun to pick less expensive, but good wines and have all of us learn from each other. What do you think?

I resemble that remark....

That's a great idea! I guess the only thing I wonder about is the availability across regions. I remember members saying that certain wines just aren't available in certain regions. So, we'd have to stick to pretty easily attainable names.

In any case, I think it's definitely worth trying and you can count me in!!

Sounds like fun! Count me in, too.

I'm in too! I want to learn more about wines, but I am hopeless. I don't know what to look for, what I am supposed to be tasting in it...maybe comparing notes would help me!

What a great idea ! I have been meaning to try some of the wines listed on the last few posts by have not gotten around to it. This would be the perfect opportunity !

Kelly- Count me in, provided I can find the wine in my area. I love wine and want to expand my "wine horizons!" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Sue

As I sit here sipping on my Berringer Chardonnay (purchased at Trader Joes as a matter of fact), I would also like add my vote for the tasting idea! We could begin trying some very mainstream wines that should be available across the country. That should make it easy for everyone to participate? Keep us posted kellysua! I've got my wine glass ready and waiting!

I'm in, too. Like SueK, availability in PA stinks! Sorry, don't want to get back on the soapbox about the PA Liquor Control Board!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
But am willng to try, it sounds like fun!! We have a few favorites we'll share!

Alas, I too, am from Pennsylvania. Luckily enough our local liquor store is one with an expanded wine selection and we also live close enough to the Jersey border to shop for wine there occasionally. Count me in for the virtual wine tasting group!

Me too! Me too! What are we going to drink first?

Yea! So to whet our whistles on this... Let's start out with a what I'm sure is a widely available wine, and get the format figured out. Format: Every Friday one of us will declare that week's wine. (The first one to post?) Then over the next week we will all try it and post our notes on it. For each new wine we will start a new thread and call it ' "wine name" tasting'. Any upgrades to this admittedly rookie attempt is welcome! How about this for our first wine, just to get us going...
Kendall-Jackson 1999 Vinter's Reserve Chardonnay, should be around $10 or $11.
What's everyone think? We can get to some more unusual wines as we go, but I wanted to be as inclusive as possible here in the beginning...

This is too cool!!!! I'll pick up my bottle this afternoon and sip on it during my last hour of work. They do beer on Friday's, but I hate beer.

I'd like to join in also--should we talk about what we are serving with the wine, whether it be appetizer or dinner? If anyone is planning on going out to dinner, they could order the bb "wine of the week".

Is there anyone who lives in San Diego who knows any good wine stores? We only go to Costco, grocery stores and Beverages and More. I am looking for a place that we can buy new wines to try based on advice from someone really knowledgeable. And a place where I can take my entree recipe and get a some great suggestions.

I love the idea of adding comments about food served with the wine, that's where I am really clueless. So we'll add that to our "format"... Keep the ideas coming!

Count me in...I also like the idea of posting what you ate while drinking the wine, this often makes a BIG difference on how the wine tastes http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

How about starting the review with a number 1-5
1...I would never buy or drink this again
2...I would drink this if there was no other offered
3...I would buy and drink this again
4...I would buy, drink and recommend this
5...I would highly recommend this and put it down as a favorite

Or something to that effect...any suggestions http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I'm off to the store tomorrow! We've actually had that one before, and if I remember correctly we liked it. Anyway, I will definitely have to try it again just to make sure.

Laura B. Wick, were in San Diego are you? I shop frequently at a Trader Joe's in Encinitas. They have good wine prices and a fairly good selection. They do not always have super knowlegable help, but a few times we have talked to the wine buyer and he has been helpful with suggestions. We get most of our wine from TJ's and Costco as well. There is another store on El Camino Real that we have not tried yet, but a friend said it was good. I'll let you know if you are interested.

Definitely count me in! Unfortunately neither my DH nor my friends like wine (all beer drinkers), so I would love to have the opportunity to experience different wines "with others". Will go get my bottle today!

Just a word on the Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. This is one of our favorite "affordable" wines. Sam's Club sells it for $8.99 - an awesome price especially considering many of our liquor stores carry it for $13.99 - so I pick up a bottle or two almost every time I go! This one gets a definite thumbs up from me! I'll have to see if I have a bottle in the fridge so I can play along anyway.....
