View Full Version : Poll: What do you do on Superbowl Sunday?

I am asking this because I am nosy, want to vent, and expect some humorous responses.
Personally, I loathe football, don't understand it, don't want to, and can't stand the way people act over it. I am thrilled that the LA/Orange County area does not currently have a football team.
If you stand back and put it in perspective, its only a bunch of guys in these ridiculous padded outfits chasing a stuffed pigskin. For this, people go crazy.
For the last couple of years, some friends of ours have a party so I go. I basically watch the commercials, visit, eat and crack jokes about my ignorance about football.
If I'm not invited to a party then I go to a movie, or somewhere that ordinarily draws a large crowd on Sundays. I have gone shopping and am astounded by how many people there are and even more surprised by the number of men!
Anyway, enough of my pontifications, what are your thoughts?
Well, I personally love football, whether it's pro or college. This year we are invited to a super bowl party, so we are going to that, but usually, we just hang out at home and occasionally turn on the TV to see the score. Since there are 2 East coast teams involved this year, I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm in full agreement w/ Wendy. Unfortunately i live in the New York tri-state area so I will be deluged w/ screaming Giants fans such as my husband who would give their first born child - if I let him - to get a ticket to the Superbowl. Also unfortunately I'm afraid that I have relented to much badgering and pleading and have agreed to host a football party at my house this year. In a way it's good though. It will give me an excuse to stay in the kitchen and ignore the game while husband and his screaming buddies are rooting for a bunch of overpaid, pumped up, hardheaded egomanics!

I am a football fan, college and pro. But the superbowl we mainly watch for the commercials. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif The hype regarding the game itself is too much. We also usually stay at home since the game starts so late anymore.

We read the sunday paper, have dinner and go to bed. My DH is NOT a sports guy.
Well, normally we're not much into football, but the hoop-la over the Ravens is infectious. The mayor has had monuments and municipal buildings around the city bathed in purple lights, and the business owners in town are doing the same. Within a few days we should have a purple skyline.
I doubt that much of celebrating has anything to do with football. For the past ten years or so, Baltimore was the butt of so many jokes (murder rate, syphilis rate, you name it). With our new mayor, the city has really turned around and everyone in town is becoming more upbeat and proud. The Ravens just put the icing on the cake. So, while we would not normally give a hoot about football, we'll be joining in with all of our neighbors screaming like lunatics on Super Bowl Sunday. Now if we can only keep all those Washingtonians from moving here for the cheaper housing and nicer pace of life!
We don't have a tv so no game viewing for us. We will probably go cross country skiing - if we have decent snow or go for a hike if no snow. I would much rather be out side playing than watching someone else getting payed to play. We will also probably have other tv less friends over for an early dinner and perhaps a board game. Boggle is our latest favorite and works well with varying ages if you twitch the scoring a bit for the younger ones.

I generally hate to watch sports and, thankfully, so does my husband. He also hates beer! He jokes that his manhood license should be taken away because he hates sports and beer. So, we will not be watching the Superbowl. The only time I have gotten into a sporting event was during the last Final Four. Living in Chapel Hill, it is really hard NOT to get excited about it when the Heels make it. So, I listened to the semifinal game on the radio, and it was so exciting! But my team lost... Oh, well.

Hi Wendy!
Nothing, really. I love a lot of sports and can quite enjoy seeing a bit of football every now and again (which is not very often at all), but I admit that the rules of football are something I've never quite grasped. Somehow they don't seem logical http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif Or maybe it's just me!

Am I the only one who is going to a big party and is really excited about it? We live in Nashville and even though we were beaten in the playoffs by the Ravens we are going to watch excitedly. I used to be like most of you and LOATHE football, would leave the room when it came on, but then I moved into the apartmenty complex where most of the Titans live and got interested in watching them play. So THEN my SO patiently taught me a few things about this sport and, although not a big fan per se, I understand a little of the appeal. So we will be going to a big party where I will make a dip (probably the spinach artichoke dip) to share with the others, we will possibly grill out, and drink a lot of beer. Or at least the guys will. Can't wait! (Maybe I'm just excited about it b/c it gives me an excuse not to study http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif)
Don - I was right with you rooting for the Ravens until you made that crack about us Washingtonians!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I will say that we are so happy to have our neighbor city in the Super Bowl and we are definitely going to be cheering them on. Since our beloved Redskins have been such a disappointment the past few years - altho' we did finally get rid of the coach so there's hope. OK - enough about football. I do like the game but don't really care enough to watch it faithfully.
My brother is having a Super Bowl party and is getting nervous about the food etc. I think he is (or I am?!) going to make either the Chipotle-Chicken Stew or the Red Chicken Chili.
LSB, don't worry. I don't doubt that people in South-central Pennsylvania are complaining about the invasion of Balti-morons! By the way, if you know of anyone coming north, please tell them to bring some of the great ethnic restaurants and markets in DC with them. I'm tired of the drive! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
Why, I spend my time poring over the myriad delicious recipes and clever entertaining ideas on www.verybestmeals.com. (http://www.verybestmeals.com.) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
Bad Gail! Bad, bad, BAD! I'm sorry. Just couldn't resist! I think I've had my nose in tax materials too much this week!
Actually, we completely ignore Superbowl Sunday and just go on about the business of life!

Thanks for the laugh Gail!
My husband is a football fan, but I am not - just never got into it. He's a diehard Redskins fan, and so does not have much to celebrate this season.
I like to go to the parties to chat with the gals, but that's about it. Our TV and TV room are too small to host one ourselves - kind of a good thing, I guess!

Our church women's group is sponsoring a Football 101 night this coming Thursday night, with a college coach as the guest speaker. Maybe I will finally understand more than the bare bones basics of the game!
When I lived in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by lots of girlfriends, we would all get together at someone's place for the Superbowl and other games. Everyone would bring something to add to the food spread, The men would "actively" watch the game, and the women would kind of watch while we all talked and each worked on our cross stitch, quilt, needlepoint, thesis, or whatever. That was probably the arrangement I have enjoyed the most over the years.
We haven't made any plans yet this year. Perhaps it will just be DH and me!

LOL Gail! I was never much of a football fan, but I can appreciate a "good" game. The rules are kind of funny. They spend 10 seconds making a play and then 15 minutes discussing it. You can decline a penalty? How does that work? My favorite is "tripping". Oh, okay, you can run, then fly into the air and hit the guy with the ball, slamming his head into the ground, but whatever you do- DON'T TRIP HIM! Personally, I'd rather trip than be pummeled like that.
Anyway, me and my husband just stay home and relax and watch the game. He usually surfs, too, because he can hardly ever sit through a whole game. My mom, who doesn't like any sports, goes to this huge party every year. It sounds like a great party, though, they have all sorts of other things going on, like card games and board games. The women who don't want to watch the game can do other things. Personally, I don't like to be out on Sunday nights. I need to relax before starting my week at 5:15 on Monday morning.

Hubby and I are much bigger fans of college football than pro. At least you know those guys are out there playing because they love the game, not because they're collecting some big fat paycheck. (Don't get me started on professional athletes' salaries...I think it's sickening and disgraceful!) So we usually skip the Superbowl. However, this year, since we're both graduates and devoted fans of the University of Wisconsin (go Badgers http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif), I'm sure we'll be glued to the set just to watch our beloved Ron Dayne!

Well, I like football (had two sons that played it for a couple of years) and I love sprots in general. But I love the Super Bowl commercials-it's alsways potty break time during the game!
Since we own the only beer joint in town we will be having a party there (normally we're not open on Sundays). We'll have hot dogs, chili, and all the trimmings and then others are bringing dips and things. It's really more like a gathering of friends since it's such a small town but I don't have to clean house before every one gets there! And everyone helps clean up after a party at the bar!

--choking on coffee after reading Gail's post! haha--
Football bores me--rugby and soccer are much more exciting. The DH and most of my friends don't like it either, so we usually have an Anti-Superbowl Party. A bunch of my friends come over, hang out, eat a lot and drink beer. It's fun! Sometimes we rent movies. Sometimes we watch the game, but it's only to see the ads, since I don't understand football at all.
This year should be nuts, since it's the Giants. It's all over the news and there are people selling Superbowl T-Shirts on the streets. We're not quite as excited as Baltimore is, but then again, it's a let down after the Subway Series. It is, after all, only 1 New York team http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
HH--my best friend went to UT!

I really don't like football guess I don't understand the rules too well. I go about reading or doing other things DH will probably be watching since Baltimore is playing. LOts of excitement because of Baltimore so I figure many will be watching the game.

I loathe all sports so the only thing I do different on Superbowl Sunday from any other Sunday (clean house, cook a little) is go to the local cross stitch store. I like to do a lot of crafts, cross stitch, stuff like that and they always open special for the afternoon on Superbowl Sunday and have a football widows' sale (g) and have snacks, a door prize, stuff like that.

Unless the Buffalo Bills are in the Superbowl, I generally won't do anything special. I'm a football fan- I enjoy watching the games (NFL only, though, I never got into college football) and there are certain other teams I'll root for. However, this year, the Ravens and Giants are not among them! My husband teaches advertising at a college, so I guess we'll just be watching (and taping) the commercials.

NJ! Definitely NJ! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif To tell the truth, I'm not all that interested in the game despite the local hype around the Giants. I'm going to a Super Bowl Party-but only for the food, commercials and...(dare I admit it)the Survivor premiere afterwards.

If anyone is interested in Football 101, Better Homes and Gardens has one listed on their home page. www.bhg.com (http://www.bhg.com) I read through it, and it really helped this football dummy!

I can't stand football. Living in the land of the VOLS you practically have it crammed down your throat every weekend in the fall.
I am "expected" to wear a UT or an orange t-shirt on "game Fridays"!!!!
I live in a city that needs one page of the news paper to cover world and national events, and 6 pages for sports!
The superbowl is not such a big deal for most people in VOL kuntry - even when it was the Titans. I am going to a sunday school class party. I always bring board games and a majority of people end up playing games instead of watching the game.

Well, our plans are still up in the air. Most years we get together at a friend's house (he travels for work and is rarely home, so he likes to have us come there) but this year all of us were invited to a party at a new acquaintance's house. The party sounds pretty big and neither my husband or friend can decide if they want to watch the game as "just the 3 of us" or go to the party. I'm leaning towards the party, because you can never have too many friends and other than the hosts and one other couple, we would be meeting everyone for the first time. As far as the game goes, I enjoy football up to a point, but my DH is fanatical about it -- he is involved with a fantasy football league with his buddies and they go all out!

Food Girl...I feel your pain! Here it's the Packers. Ugh! People look at you like you have two heads if you say you're not a Packer fan. Can I just say it now...I HATE THE PACKERS!!! Thank you, I feel much better now. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

A Buffalo native's reply to "Are the Giants a NY or NJ team?"... all I can say is that out of the 3 "New York" teams, only one actually plays IN New York! (that would be the Bills...) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I happen to enjoy football (college much more than Pro) - I was raised in Texas after all!! - but I have discovered in recent years that Super Bowl Sunday is a great day to go skiing. No lift lines at all.. even though you can ski a full day and still see the game if you wish. Even here out West.

I am definitely a football fan. Unfortunately my team is the San Diego Chargers so it has been a difficult year for me (they were 1 and 15 for those of you who don't follow football.) My fiance's team is the Packers (he's originally from Wisconsin)so neither of really care who wins. So....we will probably watch the game for commercials more than anything else and then wait for the college basketball tournament to begin.

Poor Foodgirl, wearing orange, yuck! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif I think that there are only 3 people in the world who can wear that color!
SusanD, I can thoroughly identify with you! My boyfriend grew up in Wisconsin and is a die hard Packers fan. He even has a cheesehead. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif I had feared that they would get into the Superbowl and I would have to be seen in public with him and that )*&^$% cheesehead.
I am happy that other than the Packers, he is not an avid football watcher-thank God! To those of you who loathe football as I do, the (only) good thing about it is that it has the shortest season of all the sports. For that I am thankful http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif.
