I think the earliest you can test is about 3 days before your period should start, but that depends on the test. If you test negative, it doesn't mean you aren't, it just may be you are testing too soon. Testing the day you should get your period or after will result in a more accurate test.

I believe you need to wait for the first day of your expected menstrual cycle. Newer kits may be more sensitive but that's the way the older kits worked. I'd go the the pharmacy and read the boxes. There might be one that lets you check sooner now.

Can you use a home pregnancy kit to test for pregnancy before a missed menstral cycle? Or do you have to wait for a missed period before you get an accurate answer?

I think that EPT makes a pregnancy test that they market as being able to use before you miss a period. I'd just go to the store and see if there is one there that says anything about that.

Sometimes the amount of HCG in your system will not be enough to produce a positive result until after you've missed a period. I took 2 tests, one at 2 days late and another at 5 days late, and got what seemed like an "iffy" result both times. It took a blood test from my doctor to confirm that it was positive.

Renee,

Just remember that any line, no matter how faint is a positive result.

When I was pregnant I took a regular ept test 2 days before I was due and it showed positive! The exact same week my neighbor took the same test all the way up to 10 days after she was due and showed negative, she was pregnant too though.

Good luck to you!

Well, I think I'd better wait. I don't want to be relieved only to discover it was a false negative. You see, I have 2 kids already... suffice it to say we'd make the best of with it, but it would be an unexpected development.

I just "feel" pg. I remember what it felt like in the early stages and that's how I feel. One good thing, even at 40, my cycle is regular as a clock, so time will tell.

I'm so glad I have this board to get it out of my system. I don't want to even mention the possibity to anyone, including DH, but it's difficult keeping it to myself. Thanks!

Around 40, I felt pregnant also (and it WOULD NOT have been a good thing). I wasn't...which was a relief (and even better my period came early that month). I blamed it on shifting hormones. off topic now...if you really don't want more children, maybe one of you should look into sterilization.

I was thinking that too. Stress, hormone changes etc., but I hate to admit that I have a reason to worry:o

You're right about sterilization. We've talked about it, but you know how that goes, it remains just talk until you have a scare...

As to the timing of the test, my own personal experience was that we were trying to get pregnant (talk about bad moves) and knew when I was going to be ovulating and aimed for that date. It happened to be on a Sunday and we did our thing (and on Monday, too, just for good measure :D ). On Wednesday, I already felt PG so I took a test on Friday (I think), and it was positive. I do have to mention that I had been on the pill for years and stopped taking it on that cycle, and we had held off on trying til that ovulation date.

My twins were so incredibly fraternal, that I wonder if one was conceived Sunday and the other on Monday....hmmm....

Renee,

This may sound stupid, but are your sinuses acting up? I could have sworn I was pregnant a few weeks ago, but it turned out the dizziness and general malaise was caused by sinus pressure. So maybe it's just something like that.

Also, I think the only way you could tell if you're pregnant now would be to take a blood test. When I was pregnant, I didn't test positive on a HPT until about 5 weeks into the pregnancy.

Renee:

After my second child was born, my then husband had a vasectomy. We divorced 3 years later....In hindsight, I should have had my tubes tied also (since I had c-sections it would have been relatively easy) but at 33 and in a not-terrific marriage I didn't want to end the possibility of another child with someone else. (Husband was 46 and already on his second family, he has a daughter from his first marriage). So for us it was an easy choice...I didn't want more than two children, he definetly didn't want more, he got fixed :D

But it is a hard decision for many people ....
